Good afternoon everybody,
I am a legal permanent resident travelling abroad with a temporary unexpired I551 stamp in my passport. I want to renew my passport while aboad because it will expire in 7 months, and want to prevent long expensive travel witching US to renew that passport. However when receiving a new passport abroad (I am Dutch), the Dutch government will invalidate my old passport by stamping a big hole in it. I am concerned that the invalidation of my old passport might have serious consequences for using the temporary I551 when returning back to the US.
Is anybody familiar with this situation and does anybody have a recommendation on what to do? Should I not renew my passport, or can I safely get a new passport (and will US customs accept my new passport in conjunction with the old invalidated passport with stamp)?
Thank you for your time,.
Travel back to US with temp I551 in old passport

Hi I could do that, but I would like to prevent the travel in the US, if possible. Also, a new passport is already paid for waiting for me to pick it up. That last thing has not been done because of the possible issue when returning to US. You recommend getting it in US?
