  1. Did you guys inform USCIS that the lawyer was not working for you anymore? Maybe that was the problem. They probably just kept your lawyer's mailing address in their records and because it was never updated with USCIS, NVC or the consulate, the consulate sent the appointment letter to your then lawyer.

Because the NOA1 and NOA2 came to us directly, we were assuming that everything would be coming to us. I'm sure you're right; i.e., the lawyer's address was still on file somewhere. Live and learn, eh? What p***ed me off additionally was that the Montreal Consulate kept telling me they had sent it to me at my Toronto address. Although improbable, I could maybe understand Canada Post losing the letter once, but not twice! At least it all came out today and they can send me a copy in time for my interview. Whew!

  2. Maybe this situation is an anamoly but I thought I would mention it in case anyone else has used an immigration lawyer. My fiance and I hired a lawyer to look over our I-129f package and to send it off with a cover letter. We then dismissed her services because we felt we could handle it from there. The thing is, she asked for all correspondence to be directed to her, unbeknownst to us. Everything went smoothly; i.e., the NOA1 and NOA2 were mailed to my fiance directly but I now suspect an additional copy might have gone to the lawyer. The problem was, we never got out appointment letter from the US Consulate. I kept calling the Consulate in Montreal and they kept telling me they had sent it to me. Finally they admitted to me today that they had never mailed it to me, rather, they had mailed two copies to the lawyer who we haven't had contact with since February. This aggravation I didn't need. Aren't we all so vey fragile during this process? Agh!

  3. Hi guys,

this was probably asked many'O times. But the search options is a pain in the

Just preparing in advance, when I will have to move my stuff. I'm moving from Ottawa to Colorado. I will be flying out there and I wanted to ship some of my stuff. I don't have any furniture that I will bring, except my TV (27") if possible. So lets say, PC (without monitor), clothes, box of pictures, guitar, some small personal items. So maybe 2-3 boxes.

I just called a moving company and the minimum is 1200$ US. Jeez. So i'm thinking, there must be another economical options.

Any suggestions or options that you have used?? :help:

    Thanks,

    Dom

I spent weeks getting quotes from moving companies, all outrageously expensive. I only have about 30 boxes to move weighing less than 1,000 pounds. Most companies want about $1300US. The rub was, as it is such a small move, they can't guarantee delivery for at least three weeks because they would amalgamating it with another (larger) move. I checked into shipping my stuff (UPS, Purolater, etc.) but that was a worse option. One packs differently for shipping goods as opposed to moving them. If you ship stuff, you can guarantee the boxes will be thrown and turned upside down even if marked 'fragile'. This guidance came from UPS! In the end, I have rented a U-Haul truck and for about $1,000 including taxes and insurance, I'll drive it from Toronto to Charlotte myself! I'd really rather not, but I don't see a viable alternative. The smallest truck one can rent from U-Haul is 10' so I have room to spare, in fact, too bad we aren't going to the same place!

  4. If any Canadian beneficiary has used the Peace Bridge POE (Buffalo) recently to activate their K-1, I'd love to hear of any tips or pearls of firsthand wisdom. Also, can anyone recommend any moving companies from Toronto to the southern U.S.? Even though I'm selling off all my furniture beforehand, I have too much stuff to use Canada Post or Greyhound. I'm not really keen on hauling a rented trailer either.

    Thanks a bunch,

    Jo

  5. My checklist from the U.S. Consulate in Montreal granting me status as a fiance does not make any mention of a second letter of intent written by the USC. In this website, under the Guides for K-1 Visa, it talks about a second letter written closer to the time of the interview. I do not have my appointment letter yet. I'm wondering if it will request that I bring it with me on that day (if that day will ever hurry up and get here!!!)

    Thanks loads,

    Jo

  6. You can visit - there's just no guarantee you'll be admitted tho - take plenty of ties to home country etc - but the final decision is the POE officer. If he/she believes you have immigrant intent you get sent back.

If you're from a VWP country btw you can still USE the VWP visa - I did, and I got thru ok.

Thanks for your input! I am from Canada and a lot of people mistakenly think we are part of the U.S. Visa Waiver Program. We are not but the fact that we don't generally need a visa to enter the U.S. is based on other immigration laws. At the moment (this is going to change), we don't even need a passport to enter the U.S. as long as we have a valid birth certificate.

If any Canadian out there has recently crossed the border while their K-1 was pending, I'd love to hear from you.

  7. Anyone know the rules on visiting the U.S. once the K-1 visa process is underway? (I'm awaiting word on my interview date.) I have read a bunch of conflicting things on the Internet. I am planning to visit my fiance in three weeks but wonder if I'm going to mess things up. Obviously I wouldn't volunteer the information at Customs but still, I'm paranoid.

  8. Jo,

Think about this for a minute.

Once the USCIS has approved the petition they are done with it (unless the DoS sends it back to them for reconsideration.)

    Yodrak

.... Does the information on the USCIS website carry through right to the end of the visa approval? ...

    Jo

OK point taken (but it's still the U.S. government involved). Do you know the answer to my question; i.e., how can I track the next leg of this journey? I see that members post that their DS-230/checklist is rec'd and I wonder how they know that.

  9. Other than making a phonecall to the Embassy, is there a way to determine if one's DS-230 Part 1 and checklist have been received (in my case, at the Montreal Consulate)? My fiance and I never used the USCIS website for the first phase of this adventure to track our progress as it all went through so fast. Does the information on the USCIS website carry through right to the end of the visa approval? If so, can someone give me specific instructions on how to use it. I went into it but didn't find it intuitive. Maybe I went to the wrong spot.

A million thanks for any tips sent my way!

    Jo

  10. CONGRATULATIONS - nearly there  Good luck with the interview

I noticed on your timeline that you show when your DS-230 was input into the system. How did you find this out? I've sent in my DS-230 and checklist but was wondering how I would know if it was received or not (other than making a phonecal to the Embassy?).

    Thanks.

  11. Divorce or death!!!!

On the Nonimmigrant Fiance Visa Application Form DS-156K there is a question about marital status that reads: "How and when was marriage terminated?" Okay I get the "when" part but "how"? If there is anyone else there who was previously married and filled out this form, can you let me know what you wrote? Domo arigato!

    Jo

I just realized, you're absolutely right! That's exactly what they mean. I took the word 'terminated' to mean 'divorced' but of course that's not necessarily the case. I swear my mind is fried from filling in forms. And don't even get me started on the police check or the doctor's visit!!! It was one darn thing after another. I even had a police woman at the station ask, "Don't you know if you've committed a crime? Why do you need a police check."

Good one but they might not see the humour in it!

  13. There are some questions on the DS-230 Part I form I am confused about.

    1. Question #9 asks "Including my present marriage, I have been married ___ times." Should you include the one you're about to have? I don't undestand why they use the phrase "present marriage".

    2. Questions #14 includes questions about your "spouse". Again, presumably you aren't married yet so how are you supposed to complete this?

I thank you in advance for any direction you can provide.

  14. I realize I could wade through all the chats and forums and find the answer ...

    Then why don't you?

A quick search shows me this has been asked many times. Here are only a few of the hits. There are more. Many, many more.

Wow, touchy, touchy. I spent 20 minutes trying to find the answer. There is so much stuff on each of these pages, I didn't even notice the 'Search' feature. Had I noticed, I doubt I would have thought it applied to Forums/Chats. Relax dude.

  15. I realize I could wade through all the chats and forums and find the answer but what de heck does it mean when people say they were 'touched'? I keep seeing that term and figure it must mean something other then the obvious.

Also, if anyone out there is living in Toronto Canada and going to Montreal for their interview, can you let me know how long it took you to set up your medical and police background check in Toronto? Also what was the timeline on securing an interview in La Belle Citie? I don't know if I should be planning for two months, four months, or possibly longer! Help.

    Muchos gracios,

    Jo
