  1. Last day at work today, and was wondering if anyone knows what the best reason for leaving my job should be on the paperwork from my job.

Want to be able to collect EI when I am eligible, if the need arises.

Any guidance on what was written on yours and how it was received by EI.

Many thanks in advance, entering on a K1 visa

  2. Just finished my medical in Vancouver, in anticipation for my interview at the end of the month.

Here is the rundown, and what my experience was like.

Appointment with Dr. Cheema: Monday 7:00 AM
GET THE EARLY APPOINTMENT TO SAVE TIME.

Living on Vancouver Island, I had to go over the day before. Met my brother for dinner and he drove me to the hotel. It was The Best Western, 8033 King George Blvd.
Nice hotel, nothing fancy. Paid $165 for the night.

Was awake at 5 AM as per my usual schedule. Wasted time then was ready at 6 to go. (Ya ya ya...I am one of those type of guys)
Went to the lobby and got a taxi called, and it came immediately. I was at the office by 6:15. $12 taxi ride.

I looked in windows, then went back to the office by 6:30. The receptionist came to the door to ask if I had an appointment. When she found out I did, she brought me in to start the paperwork. So freaking cool to get it out of the way early. I handed over everything that was needed, checked her paperwork to make sure that it was all correct, then sat down for 5 minutes.
I was taken for my weight and height, then got put in a room. Dr. Cheema entered the room a minute later, introduced himself and took me out to do my eyes. a couple of lines on the wall, then back to the office. He started banging out questions, and signing things off super fast. He checked blood pressure, and checked my heart beat. He asked more questions....medical history...drugs...blah blah blah. All went fast and by 7:10 I was in the lobby getting paperwork for the next place.
Taxi was called and showed up immediately. 7 minutes and $12 later I was at the next building. Since it was 7:20, I went to the blood clinic. Took my number then was immediately called. Paperwork checked, went around the corner, jabbed with a needle, blood drawn, and boom...finished.
Went downstairs, and since the x-ray place doesn't open until 8 am, I had to wait 35 minutes.
1 person in front of me, and the doors opened at 8 sharp. Handed paperwork, sat down for 2 minutes then taken into a room. Shirt off, up against the x-ray thing.....dude went behind the partition and 30 seconds later I was at the front desk. Got a taxi called and rechecked the paperwork.
Appointment at 7am, 3 stops and a taxi ride, and done by 8:10, including waiting 30 minutes for the x-ray place to open.

Taxi came immediately and took me the skytrain, $18. Paid, up the escalator and into a waiting train.
Train to downtown Vancouver, turned the corner and an express bus was waiting to go to Horseshoe Bay.
Boarded bus, landed in Horseshoe Bay, and ran to catch the ferry.
AMAZING timing for the day. 7 AM appointment in Surrey, a stop to get tests, and on a ferry back home at 9:55.

All in all a real breeze. Fast, efficient and professional. As with every step if this crazy journey, there are concerns that something might come up...the fear of the unknown that will delay things. (We have all had those thought - admit it)

Now the interview on August 31st in Montreal and hopefully home very soon with my baby, her son, and our dog. (Plus my golf clubs - I miss those guys)

If anyone has any questions, please feel free to pm me, and I will answer them the best that I can.

  3. We got ours too.
Rather ironic, I checked our status last night and it said I could book. I went ahead and did it no problem, to wake to a packet 4 email.

August 31 in Montreal. let the wait begin.

  4. I will keep everone in the loop too.
I sent mine in last Tuesday (26th) and immediately got an automated response. iSeems weird though, it said "Thank you for your message to the
    Immigrant Visa (IV) unit."
I hope I sent it to the right place.

  5. Well sadly, I get the pleasure of going to Montreal.
Nothing like 3 flights each way, 2 days and a rest day, $900 for flights. UGH!!!!!

After all we have been through (we ALL have been through), I know that this is just another step to be where I want to be.

    Cheers
    James

  6. I am working on the DS-160, and being Canadian, they only stamp my passport when I enter the US.

On the form they require more information regarding the visa.
How did people deal with this on their DS-160?

  7. Just going to chime in here.
just my opinion....but........ain't it all about love?
Isn't it all about being with the person you want to spend the rest of your life with?
We all have suffered, but....WE KNOW OUR PARTNER INSIDE AND OUT.

    Why wasn't financials discussed beforehand?
Why wasn't the future discussed beforehand?

Kinda getting sick of seeing this #######. 90% of us are busting our ### to be with the one we love. Dedicating our love, Hating the distance. .
So I ask, did you discuss the future, and financials?

  8. My fiance and I just recieved the NOA2 in the mail for our K1 visa, and it says
    Embassy: Vancouver

I live on Vancouver Island so the Vancouver Embassy would be ideal.

Has anyone been directed to Vancouver that received their NOA2 lately? Our approval date was May 25.

Kinda hesitantly excited about not using days off, expensive flights, and a pain in the ###.

  9. I live on Vancouver Island, so I am going to go to Surrey for the day, get the results sent to me, then Montreal the next week..........well, that is the plan.

Anyone have a cheap coupon code for Air Canada.
BA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA

  10. Was hoping that people that have recently booked appointments in Montreal, how far out are they booking the appointments for?
I know nothing is going to be consistent at all, and it is only a rough guideline, but just wondering aloud to possible get a sense of time.

    Many thanks in advance.

  11. Just my 2 cents worth.
When my fiance and I decided to start the process, we were so overwhelmed.
It looks so daunting, but we both took the time to do a lot of reading.

Don't look past the initial filing stage, or it will bury you mentally..
We broke it down and wrote lists. For each list we would spend a day talking about it and seeing what exactly was needed.

We would dedicate a day a week on Skype to just deal with the paperwork, exchange thoughts on what we both had worked on, what we had both read, what both of our thoughts were.

This group is amazing and so helpful, and everything you need is here for you.

Like all of us here, when you finish and submit, you will look back and think 'that wasn't that hard.'

  12. So has anyone had a DUI and not been approved?

I had one 10 years ago, and in correspondence with Dr. Cheema, I need to bring a personal reference, reference from my boss and one from my doctor regarding abstaining / or my drinking pattern.
The references will back me, and as far as I can tell, the DUI is a medical issue, not an issue that the embassy will get overly concerned about, as long as the doctor signs off on it.

I have never read of someone being turned down based on the DUI, but would love to know what people have encountered.

  13. Reading this thread, a question popped into my head
I am the Canadian on a K1, and I don't remember submitting my email address.

I looked through what we submitted, and I don't see it there.

Am I missing it, or does it originally get sent to my fiancé?

  14. Now that is some funny ....stuff.
Love being Canadian and being the polite one.

My fiancée has caught on to the fact that not all Canadians (and me all the time) are nice and polite......but heck, we still live in igloos and have moose as pets.
In Canadian fashion. I am sorry if this offends you. Can I buy you a beer to make up for it?

  15. That is part of the equation huh. Time off work.

    The expense isn't enough,
The heartache and headache isn't enough.
The costs involved, then two trips with time off, or a week off work.

How much of the documentation do you have already?

I have pretty much everything, except the time sensitive things....letter of intent....photos
