  1. my wife's mother is having her visa interview in Bogota, Colombia in mid december. Her mother is going to be living with her other daughter (my wife's sister) in Idaho. my wife would like for her to come visit us in northwest Ohio before continuing on to Idaho. does the visa or any other other papers she has to show at the airport have residence in US listed anywhere? if so, does anyone know if there will be a problem at the airport if her immigration paperwork has Idaho, but her ticket says Detroit? she most likely will not be staying with us that long, and will most likely have her detroit to idaho reservation made by the time she leaves bogota. would that be sufficient? alternatively, the initial ticket purchase could be bogota-detroit-idaho and have a couple of weeks delay for the detroit-idaho leg.

also, how long does it take to get through customs/immigration on a resident visa ? is 2 hours between flights enough time, or will she be at risk of missing her connecting flight?

    thanks

  2. my wife is from colombia and she is petitioning to bring her mother to the USA. we paid the affidavit of support fee and today her mother mailed off the ds-3032. what is the rest of the process? do we wait to receive something before filing any further paperwork? can we mail off the i-864 affidavit of support form before getting some kind of notification or do we need to wait? as for the ds-230, will her mother receive that in the mail, does she need to pick it up somewhere in colombia, or can we send it to her in an email attachment? from what i read, i think she doesn't sign the ds-230 until she is in the presence of the immigration officials? is that correct? will she get something from the embassy/consulate mailed to her that she will need to deal with? anything specific to colombia? anything wrong or missing? thanks. bob

  3. my wife, who is a permanent resident, and her son (who i have adopted and is now a u.s. citizen) are from colombia. we wish to travel there this summer. as is the situation in many cases i'm sure, her colombian passport is in her maiden name and her green card is in her married name.

I have read that the airline ticket must match the passport. any problems going there or coming back if green card and passport/ticket do not match? or is it better to get a new colombian passport with her married name? for our son, he would have a colombian passport in his old name and an american passport in his new name. also, he will be 16 this summer. she had to show papers showing sole custody when they came to the u.s.. will we need any such documentation this time? also, my wife and her grandmother (who we want to visit) are scared the colombian army will snatch our 16 year old son because of mandatory military service. (how do they think they will know he's there? Big Giant Computer?, spies at the airport?

evil neighbors?) i left a message with the consulate in chicago, but no one called back. if anyone has any knowledge of these issues, please respond. thanks.

  4. thanks for the responses. my adopted stepson is 14 so it looks like he will be taking an oath. i just wish i knew if it was on that day or a future day. if we are just dropping off papers and him being interviewed, there is no reason for my wife to take off work. but if he takes an oath and is presented with the certificate, she of course would like to be there.

also, one of the things they requested we bring with us is proof of residence, but they did not say if it is for him or for me. i will probably bring both. any suggestions as to types of documents? thanks again.

  5. i have filed the n600 for my foreign-born wife's son who i have adopted. i received a letter from the field office requesting his presence along with various original documents (adoptions papers, marriage cert, birth certs, etc). my question is will he get the certificate of citizenship at that time, or will they take the documents, send us on our way, and later get the certificate? also, is there any type of ceremony with the n600? thanks

  6. i am getting ready to do the 751 for removal of conditions for my wife and i am confused about what to do with my adopted stepson. After i adopted him i took the adoption papers to the local social security office and we got a new card with his new name and they told me he was now a citizen and i did not need to do any further paperwork.

But when i searched vj about how to fill out the 751, i saw posts discussing n-600 (which the version on uscis says expired in 2008) and n-643 (which is not even on the list of forms on uscis) which are adoptions forms. But i have also seen posts which says these forms do not confer citizenship, only provide documentation. so my questions are:

is he a citizen now or is he not a citizen until some form is filled out and processed by uscis? what do i put in part 5 of 751? (this field is really small, it asks for address and status. did you guys put street, city, and state or only city and state or simply put same as above or some such wording? what do i put for status, adopted?) are his conditions removed already because of the adoption or do they need to removed with 751 or do i need to fill out some naturalization/citizenship form? do i include money for biometrics for him on the 751? thanks in advance. bob

  7. Did they ask for a whole new medical examination or just the I-693 vaccination supplement?

that's just it. it reads "please submit a properly completed and signed form i-693 for Juan *******(medical examination of aliens seeking adjustment of status). the medical examination must be conducted by a physican who is on the list of civil surgeons approved by uscis". then the next paragraph specifically talks about getting a tuberculin test, which is fine because that was not done before. to me, it sounds like they are asking for the complete exam. did they lose it? or is it clumsy government-speak, and they just want the tb part filled in on the 693 form somewhere, and the rest can be blank because he already has his physical performed before coming over?

  8. i received an rfe for my step-son which stated that he needs a tb test which we will do. but it also talks about sending a 693 in which, since he came over on a k-2 visa, he already had a physical, and the the government's own website states that they do not need to get another one. i was thinking of scheduling an infopass appt to see if i could get a definitive answer. for those of you who have scheduled infopass appts for stepchildren, whose name and birthdate did you type into the computer when scheduling the appointmet? yours, your spouse's, or the child you received the rfe for? thanks

  9. hi all.

i have recently married a colombian woman who came to the usa on a k1 visa, and i now have a step-son who came on the k2 visa. we have sent the i485 and associated forms to uscis. my step-son wants to have my last name. my question is, if we get his name changed now, will that "gum up the works" of his adjustment of status? is there any best time in the process to do this? does anyone know how we would notify uscis? can we get his name changed then at the interview let them know his new name? if anyone has any experiece with this, please let me know. thanks. bob

  10. my fiancee and i have a k1 petition in process. she called the u.s. embassy in bogota, colombia and they told her that they sent her packet 3 on september 21. she is worried because she has not received it yet. from reading some of the comments on here it does look like it may take up to 2 weeks to receive the packet even though she does live in bogota. is there a time cut off where the embassy will consider the packets "lost" and resend it or have it picked up at the embassy? also, how are the interview dates determined? do they wait until they receive the packet 3 forms that they give to her to send back to them to schedule an interview date, or is the interview date scheduling a separate process, for example, is it scheduled when the embassy received the petition from the national visa center? in other words, will no interview date be scheduled until they receive the packet 3 forms from her? thanks

  11. Well, our petition has been approved and is currently being processed in Vermont before it will be sent to the u.s. embassy in bogota. Please bear me as I have many questions that I have searched for and come up empty or with conflicting answers. These questions are for people who have specifically dealt with the u.s. embassy in Colombia. If anyone can help me, I would greatly appreciate it.

    1. my hope is that the materials will be sent to bogota sometime this month, or by early October. Instead of waiting until she receives the packet and then obtaining the needed items (employer letter, bank letter, having the I-134 notorized), I would like her to have those in hand when she receives the packet. But will it be an issue with the embassy if these things are dated about a month before her packet arrives?

    2. speaking of the packet that will be sent to her, will it be in English or Spanish?

As for the 1-134 itself, I know I am probably reading too much into it, but I am really paranoid about some kind of mistake on it and having the process delayed, so I have many (probably really stupid) questions about that.

I have seen where people have said that if you make sufficiently over the poverty guidelines, you do not need to fill in the rest of the blanks in question 7. Do you just leave them blank? Has anyone just left them blank and not had a problem? If these fields do need to be filled in, what is the best way to respond to the following:

Personal property: I guess I could look up the blue book value of the bobmobile and subtract what I owe on it. (I think the net would be about zero!). I have no idea what else to include or how to calculate the value.

Stocks and bonds: I don’t play the stock market, but I have about 4 different pension/retirement/401k/403b plans from current and previous jobs that either I would take a hit on if I took money out, or could not take money out even if I wanted to. it seems to me that these should not be included. or is the idea that if you die, these are benefits that would go to help support her?

Question 8: I have no former wife or children. The answer to this is none, correct?

Question 10: I put my fiancee’s name in here, correct?

Since she has an 11 year old son, and he is listed in the child field in question 3, do I need to have 2 separate I-134’s filled out (one for her and one for him) and have each one notorized ? This seems nonsensical to me since he is already listed on hers, but if I am reading it correctly I have seen this posted on the web. If so, does that change the responses to questions 3, 8, 9, 10?

    Thanks a lot, bob

  12. Hello all. I am in the process of petitioning to bring my fiancée from Colombia to the United States, and I have numerous questions about the I-134. Please bear with me.

    1. the forms repeatedly say to fill out a form for each person. She has an eleven year old son. Am I supposed to send a second I-134 for him even though he is listed in question #3?

    2. in question #10, do I list his name as well as my fiancee’s?

    3. it says I need duplicate copies of the employer letter and bank letter. Do they have to provide me 2 copies, or can they give me one copy, and I can make copies.

    4. since I just sent my I-129f in about a month ago, we are nowhere near the point where they will be sending her the packet which contains the I-134. I will be going to Colombia in a little over a week and , since I can download the I-134 and fill it out, I would like to give it and all the related materials to her at that time.

will it be a problem if all the dates on the materials are before the date she receives her packet?

    thanks
