    I have a question,,

My mother in law has been a permanent resident for 14 years. She's going to Brazil to take care of her mother that is very sick. She's going to stay there for 8 months. We called the USCIS service center and we asked them if she is going to have any problem when she returns (because everybody believes that you can only stay outside of US 6 months) and they said that a Permanent resident can stay out of US for 1 year and return without any problems. My question is: Has anybody been trough the same situation?

She is still worried that she will have problems when she get back.

    Thank You!!

    How did it go OP?

  2. Thanks everyone.

Back to my original question supposing my GC isn't revoked.

How does one obtain a SSN please?

I'm wondering how long I need to be in the country for so if it's best to wait till mid next year when I move finally.

Is it possible to apply from outside the US or best I apply in person when I get there? Is it one face to face meeting or I'll have to go for multiple meetings?

    Thanks.

You have to go to a social security office and apply to get one. Follow the steps on their website and bring the documents needed to prove your identity.

So you have not been in the country at all this year, and your coming back for only one week? Where will they send the card to a US or UK address? If you are living outside the USA then why did you apply for green card and under what visa did you get it? Did you know if you spend more time outside the US for a year then they can revoke your greencard?

So a SSN can only be applied for in person in the US?

I returned in January and will go again in Dec, return in Jan then finally mid of next year.

The card will be sent to a US addy. I applied for GC cos I want to live in the US, my dad is a USC. I'm returning within a year. My understanding is if you stay out for over 12months 2ce then it'll be revoked.

  4. Hi all,

How does one obtain a SSN please?

I recieved my GC early this year and going back to the US for a week in a couple of months ie before the 1year mark. Any advice for how to do this without much hassle?

I'll also like to apply for my SSN although I don't plan to move until middle of next year.

Is it possible to apply from outside the US or best I apply in person when I get there?

    Thanks.

Are you sending by air or sea? I have 31 boxes on a ship somewhere between Dorset and Seattle right now and paid the princely sum of £284 for all of it. This was Transglobal Express.

Oh wow! Thanks so much for posting this. Did you use a discount code or this is indeed the standard price?

I pray it is cos you would've helped stop the grey hairs from sprouting on my scalp!!

  6. Hi everyone,

I'm considering buying an Aer Lingus flight and have just realised Dublin will be my point of entry to the US.

What are the pros and cons of this please?

How much time should I ensure I have between the flights?

SS Card- how do I go about applying for this please?

I'll be in the US for about 2weeks 23rd Dec to 6th of Jan. Will this be sufficient to apply for my Green Card?

Must I remain in the Country to receive it? Do I have to do anything on my departure?

What do you suggest are the things to bear in mind or do during this period?

Ps: Why are flights so expensive?

    Thank you.

  7. Hi everyone,

With the help of this great forum I got my permanent resident visa and will like information about what happens when I take my trip to the US in Dec/Jan.

I'm F1 ie My dad is a US citizen so family preference.

My six months ends mid Jan but I'm not ready to relocate until another year it seems. How do I go about this? What do I need to be careful of?

I'm travelling to the US for couple of weeks for Christmas and new year; what do I need to do while I'm there?

Do I try to get my social security number now? Will that have tax implications for me? I work in England and not moving to the US for another year or 2 it seems.

Do I need to take more vaccinations?

What do I need to do while travelling and at the airport?

    Thank you.

  8. Local Government Birth Certificate is more than sufficient if you were born from 1979 to 1993. If you were not born from that time, Please i advise you to get a non avaliability of your Birth Certificate from the local govt that suppose to issue it if it is not avaliable at the time of your birth in addition with two sworn affidavits from your uncle and your parents attesting the date, month and year of your birth.

Birth Attestation is for those born within 1992 till date. They can obtained a true certified copy from the National Population in Nigeria either Lagos or Abuja. Please go the US.Department of State manual for Nigeria Birth Certificate referal for further information about the acceptable documentation to avoid getting your case being denied. Note that whatever document submitted to the US Consulate in Lagos for an interview for visa approval will be also requested for your adjustment of Status when you arrive in the US for change of staus. Please i advise you to get a proper document to be consistent in this matter. Remember that any inconsistency found in or with your application will be denied and further application will also be denied.

Nijabound I was born in 77 what shoud I do please?
