  1. Hi guys, just a quick question concerning my wife's social security number. She received her number before we married in her maiden name. She was a K-1. Now she has her green card. What do we have to do to ger her name changed with SSA? What forms, etc? Someone told me it's a different procedure for non citizens then it is for citizens. Thanks for your help.

  2. Sorry to bump up an old thread, but I didn't want to start a new one since this is really a follow up to the same topic. As expected, we never heard back from the guy from USCIS that we talked to on the phone. So I scheduled a medical exam at a civil surgeon for my wife. She took the exam last week and now has the results. We'll be sending the information back to USCIS tomorrow. The exam cost $160. From what I've read that seems to be pretty cheap, as most people report $200+. Well, now hopefully USCIS will receive this with no problems and there will be no further problems in the AOS process. Arghhh! The stress! lol

  3. Thanks, I appreciate everyone's input so far. But I think the point that most of the people replying are missing is that it is USCIS that is requesting a copy of the medical exam form. They are not asking for the supplement, they are asking for the actual medical exam forms. They want the I-693, not the I-693A. And that really bothers me, because as a K-1 who had her exam in September, my wife only needs to provide the supplement. Now I'm probably going to have to pay hundreds of dollars for an exam that is not necessary because someone at USCIS doesn't know their job. And this whole mistake is holding up her work authorization also. I know we're far from the first couple to have problems with this process, but it just really makes me feel...victimized. I mean, we do everything right and legal, and we reach barriers. Well, I guess that's the system for you.

  4. I need some guidance on what to do here. My wife received her medical in September 2006 at St. Luke's in the Philippines before receiving her visa. It was a K-1 visa. We married in December and had the supplement form I693A completed by an approved surgeon. We filed the I-485. Today, we get an RFE in the mail stating that we need to file the I-693 medical examination form. The medical exam was done in the Philippines in September. I called USCIS and spoke with a really nice person. He agreed with me that another med exam was not needed, but he was not the person working the case. He said he would try to track down the person working the case and would get back to me with an answer in a few days. I just have a feeling that I'm not going to receive an answer though. Should I take my wife to a physician and just get the exam done (she already has the vaccination supplement)? I hate this. Everything was going so smooth up until now.

  5. I'm a little confused as to the whole medical examination thing for AOS. I'm under the impression that my wife doesn't need to get a full exam again and submit the I-693. She just had her exam for a K-1 visa in September, and I've read from other sections of this site that the medical forms should have been in the sealed packet given to USCIS at the POE. If she doesn't need the exam again, then should we send in her copy of the vaccinations or should we submit the I-693A/supplement? The form she was given from St. Luke's in the Philippines looks almost exactly like the supplement I-693 form except it is called a US Dept. of State worksheet. Also, she was not able to get a TD shot in the Philippines. Will she still need to go to the doctor and get this shot or will it be waived? Thanks.

  6. At which SSA office did the retards tell you this?

Philadelphia. I'm thinking about going to my Senator's office...which, ironically, is right across the street from the SSA office. I'm also considering contacting the local newspapers and news stations. I know at least one of them would love to do a story about how all these illegal Mexicans are getting SSNs, but a legal alien is wrongfully being denied a number when we have written proof right from SSA's own manual that she is entitled to one. As someone who works for the government, I'll be the first to admit that government employees are 75% idiots.

  7. Hi, I have a question about my fiance's eligibility for an SSN. I've read the guides and some of the other posts, and it's to my understanding that a K-1 Visa holder is eligible to receive an SSN before they are actually married. Today, my fiance went to the local Social Security office. We brought the print outs that the guides recommend you to bring with you. We were told that, despite what the SSN website says, K-1 visa is not eligible for an SSN unless you have a valid marriage certificate and work authorization card and permanent residency??? (that doesn't make sense, because if she had a green card she wouldn't need a visa). We argued with several people in the office, including the manager. The end result was my fiance was given a denial letter. My question is am I misunderstanding the guides here and must we be married first before we can apply for the SSN or is she eligible for an SSN now? And if she is eligible now, what steps should I take? The SSA office manager is against us. Thanks for any help you can give on this.

  8. There are 2 different CFO seminars - one for overseas workers and one for marriage based immigration. Did she attend the wrong one?

Yes, she did attend the correct seminar. It was entirely fiances at the seminar and a psychologist spoke to them concerning marriage in America. It was entirely marriage based. But the point of my original post here is that they told her at the seminar that she would need a letter from her FILIPINO employer, not proof of US employment or anything. Well, anyway, I got this straightened out by talking to a member and the people who posted here. So one less worry. LOL. Thanks everyone.

  9. My fiance living in the Philippines just received her K-1 visa. She attended her seminar last week. The people at the seminar gave her a letter stating that she must bring a certificate of employment with her when she travels to the US. She is on a K-1 visa and will not be returning to the Philippines. She explained this to them and they still insist she needs the certificate from work or she will not be admitted into the US. None of the instructions prior to this mentioned work verification. Now her workplace told her it will take a month to give her a letter of work verification, not to mention that she already resigned her job. Her flight to the US is scheduled for next week. Is what they told her true? Does she need to prove she has a job in the Philippines to be admitted into the US even though she is arriving on a K-1 visa???

  10. Hey, guys, quick question about the 1040s I'm including with the I-134. Should I get them notarized along with the I-134 itself? And since the 1040s are my file copies and not the ones originally sent to the IRS, they aren't signed. Should I sign them, or just send them in unsigned? I don't want to screw anything up at this stage of the game. Thanks.

  11. These questions are for anyone who has been interviewed in Manila recently. What do they require as evidence for the I-134? The instuctions on the form say to submit a letter from employer, letter from bank, etc. However, the embassy website says to submit a copy of last year's tax return. Should I just send the tax return, or should I send the tax return along with the letter from my employer, bank letter, and recent pay stubs? Also, I read some debate here as to whether or not you need the actual tax return or if a transcript is acceptable. Anyone know about that?

And now a general question about the I-134...We just received NOA2 recently, and as this site suggests, I've begun to get evidence for the I-134 together already. The interview at the embassy probably won't be until around November. Would a bank letter, employer letter, paystubs, etc. dated from July and August be not current enough for the interview?

Thanks in advance, fellow journeymen (and women).

  12. Hi everyone,

Does anyone here know what the Consulate in Manilla prefers as supporting evidence for your income when filing the I-134? I've read here about different consulates asking for different types of proof. Also, my fiance's interview will probably be in September or so. I work for the US government and may possibly be going into furlough status (i.e. laid off) sometime between now and her interview. Will this effect anything? I've already made above the poverty level, and I will be able to collect unemployment if I do get furloughed. I already have a letter from work verifing my employment, and being furloughed still means I could be recalled to work.

    Thanks for any help.

  13. Hi, everyone. This is only my second post here. People were very helpful with my first post, so I hope there will be some people who can help me out this time too. First let me begin by saying that our K-1 application was approved by Vermont on 07/07/06.

Now for the sad news of my situation. My father has had cancer for a while now and his situation is getting worse. From what I understand, It will still be several months until my finace has her interview and can come to the US. I'm worried that my father may not survive that long to meet her and see our wedding. I was wondering if there is any way that I could get the remainder of the process somehow shortened so that my fiance could arrive here sooner and hopefully be able to meet my father. Do you think writing my Congressman could help? Has anyone here ever had the K-1 process expedited due to a situation like mine or for anyother situation for that matter? I could supply the embassy or whoever with my father's medical records if need be. My mother passed away last year and never had the chance to meet the love of my life. Ireally hope my father gets the chance to at least meet her and spend some time with her.

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer.

  14. Hello. This is my first post here. I have a question regarding my filing of the I-129F and if I should be worried or not. I sent my packet to the Vermont Center. It was received on May 22. It is now 2 weeks later and I still have not received an NOA1 and the check has still not been cashed. The timelines I've looked at shows most people receiving an NOA1 in about 8 days and checks being cashed within 4 days. I know that 2 weeks isn't a long time, but I've had a string of bad luck lately and I'm wondering if this could be more.
