  1. Hope everyone is doing well. We are doing well, but I am sooooo freak'n confused on some of the topic description processes. I and my wife were married in March (she arrived here from Manila, PI on Feb 28) and all has been just wonderful, just very confused with some of the processes. I filed her AOS paperwork (I-485) on June 21, MSC received it on the 27th, and we completed her Biometrics yesterday (7-21-07), which I was amazed it was so quick (and the office is only 4 miles from where we live)! She has her SSN card, Military ID CARD (I am a retired Marine), Military Medical Insurance (Tri-Care), Dental, etc. Anyway, we tried to………

    1) Obtain for her a Drivers Learner Permit (Virginia DMV=NIGHTMARE), and we were denied because her I-94 was expired (by one day). Depending on which DMV you ask, we have received many different opinions on how to obtain her Drivers Learner Permit. Has anyone else had this problem? The online documentation states that ‘have in possession a valid Passport and I-94, or an expired I-94.’ Also, it states that they ‘Might allow the use of the NOA2 (appointment of Biometrics), but it is up to the DMV officer to make a decision on this’. Very confusing and very frustrating.

    2) Working: Was told by one store (Fashion Bug) that if they were to hire her, all they need is a SSN card and a military ID card (Valid ID). Do we need a I-765? I mean I about felt sick when I saw the price increase on the 30th of July! Can anyone help me with this? Wish I would have submitted it with her AOS package, but didn’t think we needed it because of her already having her SSN. This was one of the alternate documents that DMV asked for as well.

    3) Expired I-94. Wow, I COMPLETELY underestimated, and quite honestly, didn’t have any clue on how important this form is. Is there a way of getting this renewed without paying the $500 or so amount? Or do I need to even consider this form at this point?

OK, thank you for your time and ANY opinions AND/OR suggestions, etc. would be GREATLY APPRECIATED. I am still in shock at home much the prices for all of the different paperwork will go up on the 30th of July! Thank God we submitted ours when we did. Take care, Stacy.

    Hi Stacey,

I'm also in VA. And yes, the DMV here in VA is so frustrating, especially the one near Tysons Corner. I was in a similar situation and even took the biometrics paper that was signed by the officer during the biometrics appointment all that, but they wouldn't accept it, even talked to one of the managers because I was getting mixed information and had to go in a couple of times. Finally, fed up with that location, I went to a different DMV ( in Springfield) and got the most logical explanation. Basically they said that unless u have the paper that says that your AOS was approved, they can only give you a temporary license that will expire when your I-94 expires. And in my case, because I was swapping my Cdn driver's license with a temporary one, it wouldn't be worth it because one, they'll take my Cdn license away for good while getting a temporary VA one and two, because I'd have to pay again to renew the license and the lady said it wasn't worth it. So all in all, I haven't been able to do it and I've been here since April. I just got the card production emailed so once I get something by snail mail, I'll go again and try. Hope this helps. Good luck!

  2. Did you get NOA1s? NOA2s don't exist for AOS/EAD....interviews or approvals do.

Ok, sorry. I only received one NOA. I'll go and change my signature.

    hi again,

i just got my mail and in there, i had three different envelopes with NOAS, so to clarify my previous question, i think what happened is that my NOA 2 with the biometrics appt came to me before my NOAs 1 came with the acknowledgement that all EAD, AOS, AP applications have been received.

In other words, they do send NOA 1 for each application stating that the package has been received with the amount received AND they also do send a NOA 2 for the appt. sorry for the confusion. hope this one helped.

  3. Is it a requirement to bring an Xpress Post envelope to the interview

From what we are understanding and being told now, YES it is a requirement to bring a pre-paid, signature required 12"x15" Xpress Post envelope with you to the interview (addressed to yourself of course).

Thanks for all the congrats all, though until I get my grubby little hands on the visa, I really won't feel approved yet. I tell you what - not having my passport with me is nervewracking!!!!!!

    Mo

First of all, congrats Mo! I wondered if I'd bump into you at the consular office. With regards to your comment about the x-press pot being a requirement, I'm not sure if it's a requirement as of yet. I didn't bring one (even though I had read about the new law in VJ-I took my chances) but got my visa the next day. The two people who handled my case asked me if I had the envelope and I told them that in the letter they sent out in November, they had given me two options and I had decided to go for the option of picking it up in person. Then he told me that they're trying to mail the visas as much as they can. But the adjudicator in room C8, gave me a yellow card with re-entry permission into the consular office for the next day... I think it really depends on the person. I took my chances and pretended not to know about this new law and was willing to go out and buy the enveloppe had it been required... This is my experience and hope it'll be the one for the others as well.

  4. I guess I must have missed the part that asked for proof of engagement, lol.

Ok, just went back and read it. We don't have a ring, so I would assume that my evidence of engagement would be the updated letter of intent. As far as what other evidence I am taking goes, I will be travelling with:

    photos

postmarked cards/letters addressed to the both of us

my Visa bills which show me spending in Baltimore

hotel receipt with both of our names on it

It's more proof of ongoing relationship than anything else, I know but honestly, I'm not too worried about it. (Let's hope those words do not come back to bite me in the #######.) From the stories I have read, quite often, all people get asked for is pictures ... if that.

    Monique

THanks Monique for the quick reply. Me too! I totally missed that part on the form about the evidence of engagement until today. Dont know why but this whole time, I think I read it/thought I read it as evidence of ongoing relationship til today so I wanted to check what you were doing. I'm bringing a copy of the bill for the ring but it doesn't have my fiance's name onthe bill for some reason and am also brining photos and bills as well.

Good luck to you on the interview!

  5. Going back to the checklist sent with Packet 3, on the last page (page 3) it says:

"C. STEP THREE. Please complete, but do not sign, two copies of the enclosed Form DS-156, Nonimmigrant Visa Application and complete the single copyof the Form DS-156K Nonimmigrant Fiance(e) Visa Application. Bring these along with all your documents at the time of the visa interview."

Now, as we all know, instructions for the DS156 have changed, but in the little note that came with Packet 4, it did not say anything about signing or not signing, only that handwritten forms would not be accepted.

I figure the worse that can happen is that I sign it on the spot.

    Monique

    Hi Monique,

What kind of evidence are you providing as part of your evidence of engagement as required by DS 156k?

  6. Concerning the DS-156, we could find nothing in the instructions on the form or from the Consulate that require the forms to be signed in the presence of a Consular Officer at the interview. Anyone else hear anything different?

    [/quote

    hi there,

the forms shouldn't be signed. you're supposed to do it in their presence. this info was provided in packet 3 and was mentioned in the checklist that you were supposed to return to them. i made a photocopy of it, just in case and that's what it says.

i do have a question... i have my interview on jan 16 and wanted to know what evidence you're all attaching as evidence of engagement to your fiance. is it just the engagement ring bill? is there anything else that i should include?

  7. Hi Monique,

    Don't kill the messenger...

I notice your evidence includes original divorce order. Is this from your divorce? As a divorcee, I was required to bring both the divorce and marriage certificates (certified) from my previous marriage.

    Carla (F)

I'll never kill the messenger, don't worry, just the jackasses who make and change the rules on a whim :-).

No - I confirmed with Montreal that they do not require the marriage certificates (though I do have a copy of it). The original was handed in when I got divorced.

As for the transcripts --- perhaps I will do as advised and overnight them for notarization. I would hate for that to be the one thing that delays or prevents the visa from happening.

Thanks again so much all for answering my pleas for help - crazy and panic struck as they are.

    Monique

Quick question for you about the tax transcripts. Is that necessary? My fiance didn't give me that and I don't remember reading about that either... Can you confirm whether you need the tax transcript or not? Our interview is Jan 16 so I may bump into you on Jan 17 if we're still able to pick up the visas at the consulate. Good luck!

  8. Dr. Seiden's is easier and parking on the street is the normal fee by meter. I'd recommend there.

Yes, I agree. Dr. Seiden may have been easier... At least, they know that their medical costs can be reimbursed by insurance whereas Medisys didn't know anything about that....so if you have supplementary insurance, go with Dr. Seiden. Below is a quote that I got from their website, under the medical costs section. http://www.panelphysicians.com/Pages/ExamCosts.htm

"The cost of the medical examination, blood testing and x-ray is NOT a benefit of Canadian Provincial government health insurance plans. You may be able to obtain reimbursement from private insurance or your sponsoring employer."

  9. HI everyone,

I just got back from the medical and I thought that some of you planning to have a medical would find the info below useful...

Medical location: Yonge and St Clair for medical, blood, and documentation AND Yonge and Davisville for X-ray-30 minute walk or one subway station. Parking at Medisys building is 15$ and I don't know how much it'd cost at the X-ray location in Davisville. I took the subway. If you haven't made the appointment, I'd find out from the difference medical places whether the x-rays are done in the same building or not.... It does inconvenience you having to either walk or take the subway.

Duration of process: 2 full hours including the subway ride. The actual medical was probably 30 minutes.

    Cost: 191.50$

Experience: very easy just be prepared to wait a lot. Dr. Seit saw me for less than 10 minutes. He checked the usual: blood pressure, vision, ears, mouth, chest, abdomen and a 2 second peek down there.

Office hours: last appointment with Medisys is 2:30 pm Tuesdays or Thursdays. X-ray place stays open until 6pm. Results are ready to be picked up in 2 business days.

Addtional comment: Medisys doesn't know anything about possibility to claim with insurance companies.

Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any questions.

    Happy holidays!

  10. Just in case anyone in this process has supplemental insurance...

I submitted my medical receipt in with my last prescription batch. They gave me $100 of it back! They said they would cover what a normal practitioner would charge, and this doctor charged more.

Actually, they gave me 80% of the $100 back, but that is still $80. Seeing as the paycheques are about to end, this was welcome!

Just passing this on in case anyone else has coverage!

Just wanted to say i just got back from Medavie Blue Cross Quick Pay Office and I recieved 100% of my medical and x-ray amounts back no questions asked. Another 270$ in my pocket the week before Christmas NOT too shabby! Thanks sooooo Much for this tip!!!

    Hi there!

I just came bacl from my medical as well (will post the review in another topic) but I wanted to know what you needed to submit. Medisys at St. Clair didn't know anything about possible claims so they just gave me an invoice that stated US medical $191.50. Would that suffice? Any kind of info to get some $ will be apppreciated!

    Happy Holidays!

  11. Hey! Yes it does include a second page. I'll post it here mostly about what will happen if you DO test positive for the illnesses they are looking for. This is from the Montreal Package (Recieved in OCT 2006). You did also recieve the list of Dr's correct?

Thank you sooooooooooo much, emancipation! i really appreciate it! i did receive the list for dr's and am going to medysis health in toronto, a dr seit? good luck with the rest of your journey!

  12. hi everyone,

quick question. can someone tell me whether the instruction sheet from MTL was one page or 2 pages. i only have a photocopy of the form they sent me, but i have a feeling that i missed to photocopy the 2nd page. if there's a second page, would someone be kind enough to inform me what i'm missing?

    thanks a lot!

    fyi-my interview is on jan 16, 2007

  13. hi everyone,

just wanted to let you all know that i called the montreal office and was finally able to get a date. my packet 3 had been received beginning of october but heard nothing from them. all my emails went without replies, every time i called i'd be waiting until it was 4 pm so i never got through anyone. today i did, and they said that i was apparently put on a waiting list and they just booked my interview date, which is now scheduled for jan 16, 2007. the operator said that i should be receiving the letter soon. hope this info helps all of you waiting in the room.

Congrats. I think yours must be the first interview I have ever heard of (out of Montreal) that was confirmed months in advance like that. Did you get this date by being put on a waiting list? Strange that most people only get 3 weeks notice or so - good for you so that you can plan properly.

    Mo

No, I didn't even know that I was put on a waiting list. I just wanted to know whether my packet 3 had been received and that's why I called. I told him that I had emailed a couple of times without getting a reply and he volunteered that information. He said that I had been on a waiting list and that they had just booked a date for me and that the letter will get to me soon. Hope it helps.

  16. Hey gang. Just wanted to let folks know my fiancee had her medical in Toronto on Thursday. She got there around 12:50 for a 1:30 appointment. The lady commended her for being early. She said the doctors and nurses spent very little time with her, not even really looking in her ears/eyes, etc. In fact the nurse took more time explaining how to get to the xray place than what she needed done(she needs to fax proof of MMR). They took her word that she had chicken pox. I guess the phrase "good enough for government work" applies here. :P

While she was waiting there was another couple there. The wife was getting her medical. The husband is a customs officer. He told her Peace Bridge was the best place to cross(we'll be going from Bala to Philadelphia) because of the personnel.

Today is a phone call to Montreal and then I'll be with my best friend and Love for a week on Thursday.

Can you tell me where your fiancee had her medical in Toronto and who the doctor was? Thank you!
