  1. Any money that goes thru the Banco Central can be considered taxable. They have codes for every type of transfer. Some transfers are tax free and other get taxed. She needs to talk to a tax accountant (Contador) and bring the bank statements (extrato de conta) where you sent the money and have her taxes done. She can easily find out if she owes anything by checking with the Receita Federal and using her CPF. The taxes will be based off of what the Banco Central has reported.

I am not sure if she will be arrested or not, did she file her taxes (imposto de renda) for 2006?

    M.

    Mateo,

Yes, she had filed her 2006 taxes before coming here. Thank you for your reply - that was very helpful.

  2. I need to ask the forum if anyone has encountered this:

Before my wife came to the US I was sending her money for support and necessities. She has since arrived, we got married and she has received her conditional visa. We have sent money transfers to her account since then to help out out family members with medical emergencies and such. She is visiting Brazil this month and was informed by the branch manager that she owes taxes on the money she sent to her account as it is considered taxable income.

Has anyone encountered this before? This doesn't make much sense to me and I don't want us to get scammed. I've called the Brazilian embassy here in D.C. and they said that I would need to talk to the bank manager. Not very likely since I don't speak Portuguese. The manager told my wife that if she tries to leave the country without paying the taxes she will be arrested. She's due to return next week.

  3. Where does she live? Yes we have those in Brazil but they aren't cheap, if it's a temporary thing it's ok, but not in a long term. Doesn't she have anyone, maybe family that can storage for her?

Hola Nessa! Como vai? My fiancee lives in Cascavel near Foz do Iguacu. Most of her family lives about three hours away in Amambai so giving her stuff to them isn't an option.

On another note, we just found out that her interview date will be on 1/23/2007! That is a Tuesday. Since it takes two days to get her passport back, do you think I'm cutting it too close if we schedule our return flight to the U.S. Thursday evening?

On still another note, welcome to the US! I'm very happy that the (visa) journey is over for you guys!! How are you adjusting to your new life? Thanks in advance for your assistance!

  4. Hi all,

I am going to buy a ticket for my girl in Rio. Since the ticket price is cheaper down there, I am going to wire her some money.

What's the quickest, safest, most convenient, cheapest way to wire money to Rio? Anyone done it before?

    Thank you all!

We've been using Western Union with no problems. Within 5 minutes of getting the transfer approved the money is ready for her to pick up. And she lives in a dinky little town (Cascavel) outside of Foz do Iguacu.

  5. Thank you all for the encouragment. This website and the people on it have been a source of patience and hope. Not to mention all the great information that is shared. I can't help but feel that we are being made to go through this aggravating waiting for some reason. I just wish that I could give my fiancee a real date to look forward to instead of hearing her cry when I tell her that I still haven't heard anything.

  6. The Vermont Service Center has updated their processing dates as of August 25th. The last schedule showed they were processing I-129Fs with receipt dates of April 3. Now they're back to February 25th!!!

This is ridiculous! How the hell does that happen? You can't get a straight answer. It would help so much to have a reasonable expectation for completion of this process. My fiancee and I have been at this since November 27th of last year. Our petition was denied in April and we resubmitted our application once we corrected our error (failed to submit G-325A information for her). Almost 4 months later since NOA1 and nothing.

I'm having a tough time keeping her spirits up. I'm so damned frustrated.

  7. Talked to her, I misunderstood her. They told her the Policia Federal does not give out the certificates anymore, she was told she had to go to the Courthouse or (Forum) in Portuguese (sorry, I'm sure there is a accent on the "o" but I don't know it lol).

Apparently when she went to the Secretaria de Segurança Pública, they made her go to the Courthouse also...

    Never heard of this

Aaaaah, they don't ask for the one given by courthouses. If they don't it in her state, she could try and get it done in Rio, before the interview.

Girls, how long does it take it to be ready to go and pick it up?

It took my girlfriend 22 days for her certificates (state and federal) to be ready. Since she's in Parana she had to pick them up in Foz do Iguacu. Her certificates have an expiration date of 90 days. This is the first I've heard that the Rio consulate will accept them for up to a year.

  8. Anyone have experience in DishLatino from Dish Network for latin stations ???

I am considering changing to Dish Network for my wife to have more latin channels to watch

I'll be switching from DirecTV to Dish network because DirecTV has no Brazilian channels. Hell hath no fury like a brasiliera deprived of her telenovelas!

  9. I spent a week in Buenos Aires and loved it! My recommendations would be:

    1. Go to a show at Senor Tango's. Very touristy but a great show.
    2. Have dinner at Puerto Madero. I ate there twice (at Aires de Patagonia as well as Spetus) and loved it.
    3. Go to Recoleta cemetery to check out Eva Peron's tomb as well as the other mausoleums.

The exchange rate made things easier. Of all the Latin American cities I've been to, Buenos Aires is the most European. You'll love it!!

  10. Man are set to be dumb and clueless in these things. :P

That is NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO lie!!!!!!! AMEN! *AHAHAHHAHAHHAHAH*

Wait a second!!! I'M the one handling it all by myself on my side of the equator! :protest:

Once she gets her packet it'll be more of a team effort. I'm planning on joining her for the consulate interview...whenever THAT will be. :clock:
