  3. Hi all,

What's the first thing that I need to do once she arrives in US? Does she apply SSN right away? Here are the steps that I think that we should do. Please give me some feedback. Thank you all.

    1. EAD stamp at POE

    2. health insurance

    3. SSN Card (wait 2 weeks?)

    4. New job

    5. wedding

    6. SSN name change

    7. driver's license

    6. AOS

    7. Green card

    1. EAD stamp at POE

    2. SSN Card (wait for 2 weeks)

    3. Driver's license ( you can get this as soon as she arrives under K1 visa (with SSN) before getting married

    4. New job

    5. etc.

  4. I've read from this forum that after 2 weeks from arrival you can already apply for SSN and for sure the USCIS had put me in the system.

Can you show me where you read that here?

Waiting two weeks is one recommendation to improve the odds that you are in the SAVE system, but it is no guarantee. Some people go into SSA sooner than 2 weeks after arriving and get their number just fine. Others wait until closer to Day 76 and still are not in the system.

well you are right meauxna. Still depends and not exactly saying 2 weeks. I've noticed from most of the timelines here, they applied for SSN after 2 weeks and they were ok. So probably i can try to apply after 2 weeks, who knows i might be lucky and without so much delay.

  5. I am a little bit confused about the vaccination supplement...should my fiance be given any of the DS3025 form when he had his medical done in morocco? Where do one get one? If I am not in possession of such form does it mean that he has to do a complete medical exam?

Frequently Asked Questions for Form I-693, Medical Examination of Aliens Seeking Adjustment of Status

Are all adjustment of status applicants required to have a medical examination?

How do I find a designated civil surgeon in my area?

What does the medical examination involve?

    What vaccinations are required?

Are all adjustment of status applicants required to have a medical examination?

Most applicants for adjustment of status are required to have a medical examination. The medical examination must be conducted by a civil surgeon who has been designated by the USCIS. The examination must be documented using Form I-693, Medical Examination of Aliens Seeking Adjustment of Status.

    EXCEPTIONS:

    1. Refugees: If you were admitted to the United States as a refugee and are applying for adjustment of status one year after your first admission, you do not need to repeat the medical examination you had overseas, if there were no medical grounds of inadmissibility that arose at that time. You do, however, need to comply with the vaccination requirements. For more information about the vaccination requirements for refugees, including information about how to get the vaccination sign-off from a participating health department, see "Vaccination Requirements for Refugees and Asylees Applying for Adjustment of Status in the United States".

    2. Ks: If you were admitted to the United States as a fiance(e) (K-1), child of a fiance(e) (K-2), Spouse of a U.S. citizen (K-3), or child of K-3 (K-4), and received a medical examination prior to admission, then you do not require another medical examination as long as your application for adjustment of status (Form I-485) is filed within one year of your overseas medical examination. You will, however, be required to submit a vaccination supplement with our adjustment of status application. The vaccination supplement must be completed by a designated civil surgeon.

    3. Vs: If you were admitted to the United States or obtained status while in the United States as a spouse of a permanent resident awaiting a visa (V-1), or the child of a permanent resident awaiting a visa (V-2), or the child of a V-1 or V-2 (V-3), who received a medical examination prior to admission or obtaining V status, you will need to have another medical examination when you apply for adjustment of status (Form I-485), unless your application is filed within one year of your medical examination. In any case, you will be required to submit a vaccination supplement with your adjustment of status application. The vaccination supplement must be completed by a designated civil surgeon.

How do I find a designated civil surgeon in my area?

To obtain the names and telephone numbers of the designated civil surgeons in your area, please call National Customer Service Center at 1 (800)375-5283 or check the Civil Surgeon Locator.

What does the medical examination involve?

When the entire medical exam is required, the designated civil surgeon is responsible for ensuring that all of the required components have been completed. The civil surgeon will record the results on Form I-693. For applicants required to have the entire medical exam, all of the following are required. All adjustment of status applicants are required to comply with the vaccination requirements.

    • Physical Examination: A physical examination (to include complete disrobing) and a mental status evaluation are required, regardless of age.
    • Tuberculin (TB) Skin Test: Applicants age 2 and older are required to have a tuberculin skin test (TST). Civil surgeons may require an applicant who is less than 2 years of age to have a TST if he or she has a history of contact with a known TB case, or if there is any other reason to suspect TB disease. After the skin test, you will need to return to the civil surgeon in 48 to 72 hours to have the results read. If you have a reaction of 4 millimeters or less, you will not need any further tests for TB. A chest X-ray is required when the reaction to the TST is 5 millimeters or more. The civil surgeon will explain these medical requirements to you in more detail.
    • Serologic (Blood) Test: Applicants 15 years of age and older are required to have serologic (blood) tests for HIV and for syphilis. Civil surgeons can require applicants under age 15 to be tested for HIV or syphilis if there is reason to suspect the possibility of infection. Civil surgeons are required to provide pre-test counseling to all applicants who take the HIV test. If you are found to have HIV infection, the civil surgeon must provide you with post-test counseling.
    • Vaccinations: The required vaccination are: mumps, measles, rubella, polio, tetanus, diphtheria toxoids, pertussis, influenza type B, hepatitis B, and any other vaccinations recommended by the Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices (ACIP). Current ACIP recommendations also include the varicella, haemophilius inlfuenzae type B, and pneumococcal vaccines. The civil surgeon will review your vaccination history with you to determine whether you have all the required vaccinations. Make sure you take your vaccination records with you to your appointment with the civil surgeon. Do not try to comply with these requirements before you meet with the civil surgeon, in case it is not medically appropriate for you to have one or more of the required vaccines. For more information about the vaccination requirements, including information about waivers and exceptions for orphans, see "Vaccination Requirements for Immigrant Visa Applicants and Adjustment of Status Applicants".

After the medical exam is complete, the civil surgeon will give you Form I-693 with the results in a sealed envelope to present to USCIS. DO NOT OPEN THE SEALED ENVELOPE.

  6. Javy123

    Here is our experience.

My wife applied ~2 weeks after she got to the US (in the town were we live), she got her card in the mail ~4 weeks later, she used her maiden name to apply because that is what is on the visa and we had not gotten married yet. We went back after we were married and applied to change her name but the 90 day period had expired and she will have to wait until she gets EAD. No big deal because you can't work after the 90 period has expired anyways until you get EAD.

As for appling in LL vs SJ it should not be a big deal, just explain the situation and put down your SJ address.

Thank you bamdame. Definitely i will do that but if ever i applied for it in LL then after marriage, is there any problem in SJ for my name change? or i need to go back to LL for name change since i applied from there. Im confused, please advice.

    Thanks again!

  7. It's very possible to appoly for ur SSN while in Loma Linda, but why wouldn't u just wait until u get to ur final destination w/ur fiance? Im asking because you still have to wait for USCIS to put u in the system b4 even receiving your SS card; so therefore you may as well do it when u reach San Jose. Just my 2 cents.

    Sweetee

Thanks for your advice Sweetee but I've read from this forum that after 2 weeks from arrival you can already apply for SSN and for sure the USCIS had put me in the system. I just dont want to waste my time waiting when i can just apply it right away.

So u mean I can apply SSN in other county and will not have a problem for changing my lastname in SJ right?

    Thanks.

  8. I already have my visa and scheduled my flight on the 3rd week of this June to US. I'm going directly to Loma Linda CA to spend 3 weeks vacation first with my relatives before my fiance will pick me up and head to San Jose, my end destination.

    My question:

Is it possible to get my SSN after 2 weeks in Loma Linda ? And if it's possible, then is there a problem about changing my lastname in San Jose after we get married?

I don't want to waste time with this AOS thing so if that is possible then will possibly do that.

    Please advice.

    Thanks!

  9. Yep, that's what I did. You can apply for SSN anytime you want really, and the sooner the better.

Generally, it's easier to apply before you get married, if you're female, because then there's the whole name change thing.

We applied 2 weeks after I got here, I wasn't in their system, so they did a manual verification which took a few mroe weeks, and while I was wiating to get "verified" we got married.

I got my card, my old name was on it which was no biggie. Then I just went back to the SSA office with my marriage crtificate and had the name change done.

The sooner the better with SSN. That's my opinion. But yes, you can get married while your application is going through.

Well said Canucker18! Definitely we're going to do that to avoid wasting our time with this AOS thing. Thanks so much!

  10. Hello there,

    I've been checking the timetable of other couples and I have noticed this;

Applied for SSN first, wait till SSN received in 2 weeks then get married.

    Is it possible to do this;

Apply for SSN, and while waiting for the SSN card to arrive, we can get married. So atleast for the time being and while waiting for the card..we are not wasting our time.

Any couples who have done this without problem? Thanks everybody!

  11. I have a question on sending my divorce decree with the I-129F for the K-1. Do I have to send the whole document including the Separation Agreement? or do I just send the first four pages which is the Judgment Entry with the judge's signature on it?

I have the packet assembled and was sending the whole thing. I just wanted to know what other people did.

    Thanks,

    Jen

My divorce decree was only 4 pages...although the settlement was much longer. The USCIS isn't interested in the details of the settlement...all they want to know is if you are legally able to remarry.

Then she can send the 4 pages to be safe.

Based on my experience, my fiance sent in the 1st page only and we got RFE. So we re-submitted the whole pages then. So better submit the complete pages Jen!
