Hello all,

I am asking this question on behalf of friend who is naturalization within a week’s time. He has 3 children under 18 who will also naturalize on the same day he takes his oath.

Does he need to hand in the kids green cards when he submits his at the ceremony?? Thanks so much for your help and apologies if this question has been addressed before.

Well..the drama continues. I arrived today for the interview which was supposed to be at 6.30am. As I waited, a gentleman who was pretty nice called my name. He told me we were not going to be able to do it today and said my file was stuck downstairs. I do not know what stuck means but anyway, he proceeded to give me anew date of June 8th. So, three more weeks. I am not sure how many of these tosses and turns I can take before I go bonkers.

Argh! Beyond frustrating. Hang in there dude. Third time is surely the charm!

Haha ... I think most people say get a US passport and then go visit family in the old country. I am sure these days, register to vote, is a close second :goofy:

Good news. We finally got the letter with a date for the oath ceremony!

The uscis status changed as well like I thought it would. It now says, "Oath Ceremony Notice Was Mailed"

The end is near!

I took 3-week holiday overseas before filing for citizenship and had no issues during my interview. I was naturalized as USC in December 2015. Just make sure you include all trips abroad in your application and it should be fine. It's a your call to file before or after your holiday. Typically, within 21-30 days of filing, you will receive a letter from USCIS stating that they have received your application followed shortly by an appointment letter for biometrics testing.

Higuys, I have had my n-400 interview, everything went fine, I passed the the writing and the civic test, however the interviewer handed me form N-652, and said that I passed the test but a decision cannot be made yet and that if he needed something he would mail me, I said I got everything here with me if u needed anything, then he went throught the files again and said he got everything he needs right now, it seems like he had his mind set on that decision.

Did any of u guys go through this and how long did u have to wait?

Relax! This just means that your file needs to go for supervisory review and final sign off, which is a common step after a successful interview. It can take a few days or longer depending on the case backlog. Once the supervisor signs off then you will get a notification that you have been placed in line for an oath ceremony, assuming you have signed up for alerts. You are almost done. Congratulations!

HI,

does anyone have experience with the Washington DC field office in Fairfax, VA. I would like to find out how long it can take after the interview to be sworn in as a citizen.

Has anybody been sworn in the same day? Weeks later?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

The Fairfax office no longer performs same day oath ceremonies. I was scheduled for an oath ceremony within 25 days of my interview and finally took my oath 29 days later. So total days from date of the interview to my oath ceremony in December 2015 was approx. 54 days. I think a 30-90 days time frame is fairly standard. The groups are usually very large so many of the oath ceremonies are offsite. My ceremony was held at Oakton High School in Vienna. USCIS routinely uses this location. Hope this helps. Good luck!!

Yes, she can file before she leaves for vacation. If she gets a biometrics appointment date during the time she is on vacation, she can reschedule and ask for another date. She should make sure to sign up for email/text alerts through the USCIS website so that she stays up to date on your application status.

While reviewing the N-400 do they also review other forms submitted to USCIS, such as the I-129F or the G-325A?

Well, the IO will have your entire immigration file which includes any and all applications you have made to USCIS. But how closely they review old filings probably depends on the IO and whether there are any red flags in your application. My sense is that they focus on the n400 filing and derivative of your GC since the two are linked and the assumption is that the older filings were reviewed before your GC was issued. During the naturalization interview, you will have an opportunity to amend your application and offer an explanation. So unless you have a criminal background or residency issues, you have nothing to worry about. All the best!!! :goofy:

My green card is going to be expired in this June , I applied for US citizenship in early December last year , my application was received and accepted on 12/08, did the biometric on 2 weeks later , and on 12/31 I received an email update from USCIS telling me that I have been placed in line for interview , haven't heard of any updates ever since , today I called the USCIS customer service and spoke to a rep. , she checked the processing timeline and told me that New York City field office currently is on 8 months processing timeline , she suggested me to call back check again if i don't hear anything after this Auguest , which is almost another 6 months after from now , my concert is that , since my GC will be expried in this June , should I also renew the GC now just in case ? But to be honestly I do not want to spend twice the money since I'm already in the processing of getting my US citizenship , but I also don't want to get in trouble for not renewing my GC, I am not planning on travling or change my job anytime soon , should this be my concert or it doesn't really matter ? Also does anyone have the similar issues as mine and already passed the citizenship ? This has been really stressed out for me as the slow processing time in the local office , I check the staurs every single day and keeping my finger acrossed that my interview letter will come to me soon .

Don't bother!! An expired/expiring GC during a pending naturalization application is not an issue. Matter of fact, many people in your situation choose not to renew because of the additional cost. From the various threads it seems that NYC is one of the slower field offices because they have a high volume of applicants. Best of luck!!

Does anyone prepare bank account statement for the past 5 years during the interview? I am thinking to ask an officer in the bank to print all of them out for me, but I'm afraid they will want to kill me......

You don't need to show bank statements if you are applying under 5 year rule. If based on 3 year eligibility, then you just need a few random statements (pick 3-4 statements per year) which you can print from your online bank account unless you are with a very small bank or credit union which does not provide this feature.

NATO is a public international organization therefore spouses of NATO employees are eligible for expeditious naturalization. His contract as you have described it, suggests that he is a permanent employee, rather than a contractor or short term staff, since there is no pre-determined time limit to his employment with NATO. But he can easily clarify with his Human Resources people. They must have in-house immigration experts who can tell him whether his terms of employment prevent 319b processing.

And by the way, your written English is very good. I had no trouble understanding you. I am just not as familiar with 319b processing for spouses of NATO employees. I have included a useful link below which you can review with your husband if you are uncomfortable with the language. Best of luck!!

I'm so happy! I can't wait for you all to finish the naturalization process too!!!

I'm really scared about applying for the passport. Is there any way I could apply without having to leave my Naturalization Certificate? I really don't like the idea of having no way to prove my citizenship while my passport is getting processed :s I need it for a lot more stuff than just updating my Social Security record at the moment. Is my only choice waiting until I actually have a trip planned if I don't want to leave my original certificate? Is there any way a passport facility would accept a copy if you present the original when you apply in person? Our mailman has misdelivered mail quite a bit since we moved here and I'm afraid that my certificate will get lost. :s

For first time/new applications, ORIGINAL proof of citizenship is required. This is because the post office is merely an acceptance facility for the State Dept. They do not actually process your application but merely pass it along to the Dept of State. There are some horror stories (as with any process) but overall the process is very efficient and reliable. Thousands of people use it without any issues.

But if you are that concerned, you have 3 options in my opinion: 1) apply for expedited processing which costs an additional $60, 2) apply at one of the regional passport agencies operated by the State Dept. for same day or next day processing but they require proof of imminent travel to use this service, and 3) if you have no immediate plans to travel overseas, defer applying for a passport until you have addressed the other items that you are concerned about which require proof of citizenship.

In my experience, expedited processing is not that much faster than routine. I applied for my passport on Dec 23 using routine processing, the check was cashed on Dec 30, my new passport produced by Jan 7 and finally delivered to me via overnight mail on Jan 9th. I received my NC on Jan 19th in almost pristine condition. And in between I sent back my passport to correct a printing error which was resolved very quickly and my reprinted passport returned within 7 days of submission. In fact, my reprinted passport arrived a day after the NC.

Oath Ceremony Will Be Scheduled

We placed you in line for your oath ceremony and will send you a notice for Receipt Number NBC*xxxxxxxxx, with the date, time, and location of your oath ceremony. You should receive your notice within 30 days of its mailing date. Please follow the instructions in the notice. If you move, go to www.uscis.gov/addresschange to give us your new mailing address.

Does this status change once they actually send you the letter, I see people on the thread referring to their status as "Oath Ceremony Scheduled"? Yes, once your oath ceremony is scheduled and a notice mailed, your status will change to "Oath Notice Mailed". This can sometimes feel like the longest wait because you are so close to the finish line. Same rules apply as pre-interview. Make sure you do not pick up any traffic citations before the oath cermony. There is a questionaire at the back of the oath notice which you need to turn in at the ceremony. It asks for any changes since the interview i.e. international travel, citations, marital status changes etc. Any change may postpone your ceremony if the officer thinks it is material to your application for naturalization. You do not want to be turned away on the day of the ceremony.

I had my interview on January 8 in LA and was approved so now waiting for the Oath letter. From previous months I see that for the LA office the Oath ceremony usually happens with 4-6 weeks of approval.

I received my NC this week. I was expecting the worst but it was in almost pristine condition. No ugly creases, smudges or staple marks.
