  1. My wife got approved. It was one crazy interview. Will post details later on today.

Here is the review for today - Mumbai (Specially LinJoe)... (KEY OF THE INTERVIEW SHE DIDNT HAVE ORGINAL MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE BUT A TRUE COLOR COPY WITH ORGINAL SIGNATURE OF THE MARRIAGE REGISTRAR)

The below write up (written by wife) is for candidates aspiring to immigrate to USA (on green card, not H4 or other type of visa) to be with their spouses.

My consular interview for immigrant visa was scheduled for 7.30 am slot at the U.S. Embassy in Mumbai located in BKC. My husband was my petitioner.. I reached the embassy by 6.50. 100s of people had already queued up outside the gate. Not surprising though as candidates from a few other states that do not have Immigrant visa section have to come to Mumbai.

They had a separate queue for the 7.30am batch and had started admitting people in by 7. Keep your passport and interview letter handy for quick entry. A word of caution, there is no good place to sit and wait around the Embassy. So do not let anyone accompany you assuming they will wait outside until you are done with the interview.

Once in, you go through security check just like at airports: baggage check and check by walk in through metal detectors and frisking. Ensure you are not carrying any electronic items like mobile phones, CDs, pen drives, etc. I had a digipass of a bank ( luckily with zero balance) in my wallet. I was asked to take it out. Also do not carry perfumes and deodrants. There are no lockers in the immediate vicinity, though there are some people standing outside the embassy who help getting a locker at a place a few minutes away. But hey unless you are an outstation applicant do you really want to go through this hassle? Best thing is to arrive with just the necessary documents. I had some confusion about my medical reports : whether to carry the CD or the envelope with papers. I forgot about it completely although I was told about it when collecting them. The appointment confirmation letter clearly states that no CDs are allowed which made me conclude that I need to carry only the reports. The CD is to be taken with you to the USA.

Once through the security you are made to assemble and line up in a hall where your passport is taken and scanned. There are about 4 counters that scan. The process is pretty quick. Names are called out and the passports are handed back to the candidates. From there the candidates are directed to their respective sections based on the type of visa: immigrant, tourist, etc.

Once in the immigrant visa section, you need to collect token for document verification and submission. The token is a small adhesive sticker pasted on the interview invitation letter.

While allowing token you are asked for your language preference for the interview.

The staff there call out token numbers and come to you to help you arrange your documents.

The documents that they ask for are:

    Passport

Original and photocopy of birth certificate

Original and photocopy of marriage certificate

DS 260 confirmation ( the one stamped during biometrics)

    Medical report

The assigned window for the token is displayed on screens placed at regular distance.

There are 15 windows in the immigrant section of Embassy in Mumbai.

10 are used for document verification and submission, 5 for consular interviews.

The officer at the window for document verification has the file of documents submitted by the petitioner.

They ask for some basic information of the petitioner like which state and the beneficiary' s relation with the petitioner.

They check for the last 3 years tax transcripts of the petitioner in their submitted documents.

They checked for W2 document for tax which I neither had nor was aware of. I was told they will ask for it to be sent. But otherwise the case was good to go for the consular interview. I wasn't asked to submit it later though by the interviewer.

The originals birth and marriage certificate are returned, only the passport is kept along with the candidate's file.

The passport size photographs are not required. They use the photographs submitted in biometrics. But do keep them handy just in case they are needed.

Your language preference for interview I s checked again.

You are also given a leaflet explaining legal rights available to Immigrant victims of domestic violence in the USA and facts about immigrating on a marriage based visa.

Post that you wait again for your turn for the consular interview.

    The token remains the same.

There are Indian as well as American consular officers.

The officers review your file and interview you accordingly.

It is not a stress interview. The officers are rather warm and put you at ease.

The questions I was asked were

    1) why are you going to the U.S? ( to which I replied that my husband stays there)

    2) what does he do for a living?

    3) which company does he work for?

    4) what kind of projects are they into?

    5) is your marriage love or arrange?

    6) how did you guys meet?

    7) who approached whom first?

    8) what did he say? ( he had my whatsapp chat transcripts that my husband had submitted as evidence of our relation. There was no scope for me to bluff. Luckily I remembered what he first said to me. Otherwise the best answer would have been I don't remember)

    9) what was your response like?

    10) what did you like the most about him in his biodata? ( I had mentioned in my earlier answer that I had asked my husband to send over his personal details)

    11) how did things go post that?

    12) did my parents like him? Why?

    13) I was asked about my work ( job)

    14) would I like to continue doing the same work once in the USA?

Post the question I was told the 4 golden word " your visa is approved".

Also a leaflet is giving that states that your visa is approved and a few instructions below it.

He also gave me a leaflet explaining about the immigration fees to be paid.

You can also ask them questions if any w.r.t the further course of action. They do oblige happily.

I did ask the interviewer a couple of questions.

    My advise would be:

    1) ensure you know all the details of your spouse: family, education, job profile

    2) revisit your journey as couple right from the first time you meet to the day of the interview

    3) familiarize yourself with the documents that your spouse has submitted as petitioner to the NVC so that your answers are alligned to the documentary evidences

    4) if you don not know the answer just say I don't remember. Do not bluff.

    4) do not worry much about the clothes. The interviewer gets to see only your face and the upper body. Just ensure that you don't look shabby. Dress somber, not loud.

    5) Smile, it's just an interview. Not a matter of life and death. If something is not OK they will call you again or ask to mail the documents.

Good luck to all those preparing for this journey of immigration to USA.

Thank you Visajourney and all of mates out there. Much appreciated your help. Any question PM ME.

  2. What all did she have done? I thought it was just fingerprints and photographs. I thought those were ready the same day and the applicant takes it with him/her to the interview?

Let me know so I can give my husband a heads up. He's scheduled to do his fingerprinting stuff the day before his interview.

So far she got her medical done which did get an report.

She also had her bio metrics like photograph and finger printing which she didnt get any report of it as she was advised that it will be sent to the consulate directly. Also she had to make an appointment directly thru the us travel docs website.

Can someone please confirm if the bio-metrics reports were given to you or not? Should i call NVC and see maybe they can help us?

  3. Hello all,

I just have few question as i am preparing my wife for the interview.

    1. Can someone please show me the link where i can i confirm if her package was received by her embassy? I try to look up that post but i was not able to find it.

    2. Our interview is exactly an month away and she is yet to receive the interview letter in mail. Can she print one and bring that as an confirmation letter to the interview or does she needs to have the original letter which she receives in the mail.

Much appreciated your help in advance.

  4. I would call them. sign in to CEAC and see if your spouse's name has a FNU in it now. that's what prompted my call. My checklist was generated on 2/16 so they may have worked on yours already. Just call and ask for an update.

I hope you don't get a checklist too.

I think the sooner you call, the better. Good luck!

Just got off the phone with NVC and Rep said that "Nothing from your case has been reviewed - Mailed Reviewed and no checklist has been issued" so i am guessing they haven touched my file yet.

Crossing my finger they somehow managed to get hands on my file. What was the last scan date case complete on VJ? Feb 17th i saw like on last page? Can someone confirm?

  5. Guys,

Can someone please point out to me for Vaccination write up? Like whats the process for vaccination for Mumbai/India requirement? Also, how to handle the matter when you dont have any track record or document records for your vaccine shots you have taken when you were young? My File is currently with NVC and i am just trying to get an head start on the paperwork and i am currently stuck on vaccination records. Applicant was reached by NGO for few vaccination shots, So should she take it or wait for the medical exam and go from there? If she takes shots from NGO than she will have records for those shot but one of the shot specially hepatitis b is broken down in 3 different visit which can probably to June and my scan date is 02/19/16 so guessing an interview date around May 2016.

Should we avoid any shots or all shots or only specific ones which requires more than 1 visit?

    Thanks for the help guys.

  6. Did you send the AOS and IV packages separately? Did the email come from AskNVC? I only received one email and it came from NVCInquiry. It was dated February 19th saying they received my documents on February 16th and due to the high volume of incoming mail to allow them 30 days from the date they received it to review my documents. I just figured they were finally responding to my question from weeks prior asking if they received my petition from USCIS.

Nope 1 package with 2 folders in it. It was sent out in one package.

Both of the emails came from NVCInquiry. I will just call them later on today when i get a chance

  7. Okay i am confused now.

So i called on 02/19/16 and rep told me that my scan date is as of 2/19 even though my docs arrived to NVC on 16th. Got an email on 02/20 saying that they have received my docs and have started the processing the paperwork, letter was dated 02/02.

I received another letter today dated 02/22 stating the same thing that they have received my docs? Did you guys received 2 letters via email? is it because of 2 package AOS & IV?
