  1. I have been reading various threads in the 'Tax & Finances During US Immigration' Forum but can't seem to find a specific - Here is the dilemma.

I married last year (Oct-2015) using a K-1 visa. I'm still in the process of Adjustment of Status. I have a social security number, but have no income in America. My wife is now filing taxes. Do we file married jointly or married separately? From what we've found, we should file jointly, even though I'm a non-resident, I can choose to be a resident for tax purposes, but then will have to include my income that I made in 2015 in the UK, but that shouldn't affect us too much as USA and UK have a tax treaty. Does anyone have an experience with this? Does this sound like the route we should go? Any advice is appreciated.

  2. I went to the petrol station (or gas station as I keep getting corrected) to buy Milk, went through the normal scenario of "Hi, how are you doing today" give the lady a nice positive answer and she said "Oh wow your from Ireland huh" I said "No Im from North East England, Stockton-on-Tees to be exact" she looked at me blankly turned to her co-worker and said "He's got an Irish accent" LOL

I get strange looks all the time when I talk here and some people honestly don't have a clue what I'm saying and I have to keep repeating myself and I find myself doing a very strange accent to help them out :) I asked a guy on a yogurt truck for a peanut butter crunch yogurt and got handed pineapple I had to repeat myself another 2 times before my wife stepped in and said "Peanut butter crunch" the exact way I did and he seemed to understand her perfect!

  3. Well I arrived in the US two months ago and got married 3 weeks ago, applying for AOS this week. I must say its been daunting and a rush all at the same time. Has it all been worth it... Yes i would say so. I keep in touch with family almost daily via FaceTime and Skype (If anyone is feeling home sick I would recommend going out and getting a cheap tablet that can run that form of software for me it's been a blessing and I think its pretty much erased any feelings of home sickness) and have started eating breakfast at pretty much any time of the day! My wife hates it when she says "We'll go for breakfast tomorrow" and Im up at 7am waking her up saying "C'mon then lets go" when really she means eat breakfast at lunch time.

On the plane to the US my back tooth cracked and half fell out, it wasn't a problem until 2 weeks ago when I developed an abscess so had to go to the dentist... Now I hate the dentist with a passion as Ive had loads of bad experiences with them, so I wanted one that could offer IV Sedation for this, I found one and he's awesome and I would say that U.S Dentists are way better than the U.K but it is expensive without insurance. Root canal and a crown is costing 1,800$ without insurance and around 500$ with.

I can't wait until I can start driving as everything here is miles apart and thats so different from England. No local bus services so I'd have to walk 8 miles to get the 'local' bus lol so most days I just do chores, walk the dog (who has become my best friend :) ) whilst my wife is at work but come the weekend we just head out and camp, hike, 4 wheel, bike rides and I love every second of it, shame weekends couldn't be longer!!

  4. When I got the green light from the embassy I went straight to work handed in my notice told them I wouldn't be working my notice as I wanted to spend a week or two with my family before I left. Work was totally cool with this. Then I started thinking "what if they retract the visa" I dunno stranger things have happened at sea I guess. I think we must all go through these thoughts of what if...as it's the unknown and most of us are a lil' nervous of that. Seems fine though as my visa was issued yesterday so 7 days (working) till it changed its status.. Now I can't wait for that first night/day when I land ;)

  5. I'm getting my visa sent to the depot and on the embassy website it says it's been issued (this must of been yesterday) do the courier company notify you immediately or does it take time only reason I am asking as I'm pretty sure the company I used to work for used the same courier and to say they where pretty slack at notifying people is an understatement. I hoping I've got my wires crossed and it's a different company as I recall being on hold for 1.4hours once :( what are others experiences of this?

  6. So I had my interview yesterday (I will write up my experience in the relevant place later today) I was pretty sure I asked all the right questions but when I left the build I realised I had forgot to ask "How do I know when my visa will be ready to collect" I have no idea why I didn't even ask that - but I'm sure one of you lovely folk will point me in the right direction :)

  7. I phoned Booking.com and explained the situation to the lady on the phone that I had made a non amenable booking and she was awesome. She phoned the hotel whilst I was on the phone and explained it to them they said it's fine as long as I pay the difference. At 20£ I wasn't going to grumble then she wished me luck at my interview.

  8. Sorry to hear that. When was your original appointment and why did they need to move it?

The lady on the phone didn't say and I did not want to come across as the awkward guy lol. Well whilst typing this message out a lovely lady via the hotel I've booked in phoned and told me to to worry she will change my date and all I have to pay is the difference. So that was a nice start to the day at least :) Original date was the 10th Aug

  9. So I got my appointment letter last Thursday and usually leave everything until the last minute but as this interview is thee most important thing in my life right now I thought I best get prepared.

Booked my coach tickets. After spending 9 hours on a coach there and 9 back for my medical and doing it all on one hot and sweaty day I thought it best that I go a day early and book into a hotel relatively near by as my interview is at 9am.

Hotel that I wanted wasn't available that night so I thought what the heck and upscaled slightly spending a bit more on a nice hotel. I was quite proud of myself for doing this with over two weeks to go, paper work all in order and ready, just a few photos as a proof of relationship needed taking to the photo place then I'm good to go.

Walked out of the house and the phone rang it was the embassy telling me I had to reschedule my appointment. Moving it further into August :( gutted.. Then realised that my coach and hotel are both non refundable or amendable!

I guess I could of stood in dog poop to make my day worse :)

  10. WOW , you scare me of relocating ,at first we didn't even think of moving to US but after the revolution here, things got worse and worse so my husband asked me to go and live with him there , but after what I read here I got worried , how can we leave a bad place to live in a worst one , I pray not of course.

Don't be scared of anything on here, start a new life out there you'll be fine. What do you worry about in your country at present?

  11. When my other half come to visit me she got called to one side and took in a interview room and they asked her the reason of the visit. When she told them she was visiting me they asked her questions about my address, eye colour, work place. Basic stuff. I was waiting in the airport everyone had come out and 30 mins had past then a announcement went out for me to contact the desk. The nice lady on the phone just cross referenced everything and said "Just make sure she gets on the flight home" really easy going type stuff no pressure what so ever.

  13. So I had my Medical 10 days ago. Filled out the D160 and the notice of readiness pro to the medical and now I'm just in limbo waiting  and waiting is the worst thing other flying about this whole process :)

Im just after advice as to who long you should leave it before you start ringing DOS to find out your interview date as I know the letters can sometimes take a eon getting out.

  14. Sausage Rolls, pasties and scotch eggs are all easy things to make as are decent chips lol speaking of chips anyone know if the Acti-fry is a product over there. I can't recall seeing one in any of the large chain shops I went in, I think its a great product and for the amount of oil you use it makes some real good chips. Not your local chippy chips but as a decent compromise there good :)

  15. What is Dove chocolate? I don't think Ive seen it there. Hershey's was disgusting it was like eating candle wax. I'm pretty sure we will all agree that our little treats here we would rather do with out to be with our loved ones. Like 2ndMessiah says its only a matter of time before we find a substitute.

Like I could live without our fizzy coke that on a nice hot day is the best thing ever so rather than get a US coke thats less carbonated I can just go get a huge slush for the gas station (or petrol station depending on your current situation) My fair lady swears that Fun-onions are as good as pickled onion Monster Munch I think not but would make a good replacement

  16. I feel like when I go I'll be breaking up with chocolate ??

I know already I'll be missing Galaxy caramel &teaser bars

Unsmoked bacon trying to find that in Texas is a nightmare

English Bisto gravy! Not the white slop

&muller corner yoghurts the yoghurts their just aren't the same

Gosh I need to pig out before I go!

I feel like that white gravy serves a purpose and it's usual at breakfast time I would hate to think of that stuff getting served with veg.

To everyone thats said Galaxy chocolate your so right I will miss not being able to get a ripple at the drop of a hat lol

Hey Chris cheers for the info on HP sauce I had no idea that Fred Myers sold it... The mother in law to be works there if she keeps me supplied we'll stay friends

  17. Whats the top 5 things you miss or will miss when you move. Can be regional stuff aswell but add an explanation. Leave out the obvious stuff like parents and friends as we will all miss them.

I gotta say HP sauce for me (Cant believe the nation that loves bacon as much as it does doesn't do HP sauce it's the only sauce I know that can make bacon go from being great to outstanding) Cask ale of the British variety, Parmo (regional to Teesside - breaded chicken breast flattened, deep fried. then béchamel sauce and cheddar cheese added and put under the grill. Loads of garlic mayo on the side) Fish & Chips. Tried them in Bend Oregon sign said "The Best Fish and Chips in America" I think the sign was one huge typo.

I'm sure when I get there I will miss loads of stuff I just take for granted i.e instant coffee but for the foreseeable future I can live with that or until the parents send SOS supplies

  18. NyQuil just turned my lips blue and then a huge bout of anxiety followed I was 20 years old I didn't even know what anxiety was lol

Single serve K cup things are what I had here but like you say in England we like our coffee hot I can only take my coffee boiling like straight from the kettle a splash of milk and three minutes later its gone.

One thing that I did have there and thought "Why on earth is this not available in England" was called Kank A+ and was for toothache worked more or less instantly. Its a gooey brown colour and it certainly doesn't smell all that. But when it takes away toothache I don't think your really that bothered unless you have a strange gag reflex

  19. Coffee - I love Nescafe and when I was in Boise with my partner and her family they got me hooked on the Keurig, but I had to have it with copious amounts of creamer (lovely stuff as well and a shame the UK doesn't have it) but it takes so long to make 2 cups of coffee its a pain. Her family was sniggering at my lack of a decent cup of java. Until she come over here and actually tasted it and seen how quick it was to make. She ended up taking two packs of the Nescafe refill stuff back over with her and got her family round to my way of thinking :) since then she has seen nescafe in world food stores... Along with HP sauce. You do pay a bit of a premium on it but its to be expected. Never did I think I would go to america and crave British stuff LOL.

One word of warning for the brits headed out there and if you ever come down with the flu or man flu/cold (gender depending) do not take NyQuill... My word that is some crazy stuff just ride it out as best you can.

  20. I have my medical booked for 1st July. But can't get my medical history until 29th June (tomorrow) I spoke with a nurse last week who checked my records but the computer only goes back until 1992 so she had to send off for the old ones 78-91 printing hence why its taken a lot longer than I assumed it would. She thinks with me and her been roughly the same age I will have had the MMR jabs when I was a baby (Im hoping so) Ill open them up and check tomorrow if I haven't am I best of scheduling the shot the after the medical ASAP and getting my doctors to fax over a letter confirming that I have had either the booster or the first part of the MMR and just bite the bullet and get the other half done stateside?
