  1. The calculation is pretty simple.

It is 1% of your AGI- Filing Requirement or $95 whichever is higher. Depending on the situation or state you leave in, there could be some exceptions, that could be applied to eliminate or reduce the penalty.

I am an accredited Tax Preparer with IRS. You can send me a message if you want help in filing taxes.

Hope you can help me too Oksana&Max, I have sent you a private message regarding my situation. Thank you!

  2. Thank you tdotca.

So did you use the province of Ontario ( depends on what province are you ) not the income tax package for non-resident and deemed resident of Canada?

This tax return makes me crazy! I do not know where to start. I have my T4 now and dont know what to do!

  3. Hi fellow VJ'ers,

I received my very first EI checks but I closed my Canadian bank account. What bank in America do you think can help me deposit this EI without any problems? I remember someone gave us a canadian cheque as a wedding gift but it took like a month of waiting.

Or can I open a TD canada account while I am here in the U.S.? Or RBC?

  4. you need to file in both countries. Report the income earned in Canada Jan to June on your Canadian return. Make sure you select that you are a non resident as at December 31 2015. Report the income you earned in the US July to December on your US return. File a US return even if you don't make the threshold. I have seen lots of situations where people applying for credit, mortgages, or even as support for K1 or other immigration didn't file and then had a tough time meeting the criteria.

This should be the last Canadian return you need file unless you move back there.

So I will go at CRA website? I cannot file online? Did you do yours already? Thank you for your help.

  5. You need to call them about the GST credit. You will owe everything they paid you after the date you moved. Writing a letter will not work (I tried.)

Did you work in the USA? or make over the threshold to file?

I tried calling them at 1-800 959-1953 but there's no way I can talk to a representative.

I started working in the U.S. in December 2015. So I figured I must file a tax return right?

  6. Hi, we have the same situation. I worked in canada from jan-june 2015 and I need to file my taxes. I requested my T4 from my previous boss. Can you tell me what kind of fillable form are you using? And are you going to mail it to the CRA?

  7. Hi everyone,

I am here in the U.S. since July with K1 visa, but I worked in Canada from Jan - June 2015. I requested my T4 with my previous boss. Can you help me on how to file it here in the U.S?

I also worked here in the U.S. last December 2015. Should I file on two countries, right? One in Canada, and one here in the U.S., right?

Another thing, I still receiving a GST/HST credit even I told them to stop it. It was only forwarded on my U.S. address. I cannot contact them thru fon. Maybe I can write them a formal letter?

  8. Hi, I arrived as a K1 visa too here in the U.S. I didnt know we are eligible for EI until I research on something because I have a hard time finding work here. My question is, I arrived June 30, 2015. Today is November 29, 2015, am I still eligible? Can I file a bit late even if it says 4 week period? I received my combo card recently. What do you think I should do? HELP! Please! Thank you

  9. addition: As a K1 , I would not file for EI right after quitting job and/or arriving in the US unless you definitely have work authorization ( in the form of EAD / GC card).

Why? Because you could potentially be cutting yourself short.

Example: I arrived / filed in Apr. Claim starts and is valid from Apr to Apr; based on my qualifying hours , I am entitled 34 wks. Claim closed as no valid EAD/GC .

    - Did not get my EAD(govt messed me up as card was not sent after I received my GC and I had already redid EI claim). So EI reactivated as of Oct. Claim now good from Oct to Apr. If you count how many weeks there is between Oct to Apr, it is not 34 wks (and not even taking into account the 2 wks waiting period). It is not to say that I will not be looking for/ accepting jobs within this time period but as you know, it is difficult to find employment at the best of time.

Well lesson is now learnt. Hope others will benefit from this.

  10. Hi, I just wanted to ask, did you get a refund from them. I had the same mistake. :(

They said to email and call then when I do that, they will say, they did not handle this matter. So goodbye 265$?

  11. Hi guys, I had a problem paying my MRV fee. I paid it via Mastercard (option for k1 visa is by cash or via credit card of $265) and it says error and do not pay again. When I checked my credit card, it went through but when I emailed U.S. Visa information Service, it says it didnt get through.
