If you've already paid the visa fee and submitted the application then you can't withdraw it. It would automatically be entered into the system as a denied B-2, which would most likely result in your ineligibility for the VWP. This is why people from VWP countries need to stay away from the B-2 unless absolutely necessary.
By application do you mean just the DS160 form or the whole thing?
I called the embassy. I told them about my station; they said it was ok, since I alredy have an ESTA which I just need to update, and that I didn't pay and didn't schedule an interview, and thus I wasn't registered.

Long story short: I change my mind about the duration of my future stay in the US. So I'll just go with the VWP instead of the B2, But the DS-160 form has already been filled-in and signed, I haven't made an appointment or anything like that. Could an unused DS-160 be an issue?

Thanks, that's quite a relief to know. I wouldn't be too comfortable having that at the back of my head.
