  1. Hello everyone!

My fiancé who is on the J1 visa has now started his job in the US and we’re thinking about fastest route for me to join him and (eventually) get work permit under J2. We're marrying in June and I want to visit him between now and our big day.

    1. Should I visit him on B2, stay for about 3 months then apply for the J2 after we get married in Italy this summer?

1a. In this case, is it better to apply for J2 from outside or within the US after I return to the US on a valid B2, post wedding?

    OR

    2. Should I join him under the visa waiver programme as a tourist for 3 months, we get married in Italy this summer and I apply for J2 from outside the US? In this case I guess I’d only return to the US after getting the J2?

Please can anyone comment on which of 1 and 2 could be smoother and facilitate fastest entry as J2 holder?

I hear that getting J2 work permit takes long, anyone have any idea how long? Will this be affected by my choice of 1 or 2 above?

  2. Thanks for the replies, Boiler. Seems pretty straight forward.

Does anyone know whether it'll be possible to apply for the J-2 visa whilst on a 90-day visa waiver status or on a B-2 visa? OR would I be required to make a separate application for the J-2, from outside of the US?

Basically, I'm trying to figure out whether it'd be possible to enter the US and not have to leave my spouse, go back to my home country to apply for the J-2 visa once we're married.

  3. I am new to the site so hello to you all! Would love some advice on the following please:

    Background

I'm Finnish national and my fiancé is Italian. We live in the UK. We are engaged to be married next year, wedding is in planning. My fiancé got a job offer in Florida on a J1 visa. We plan for him to go ahead without me first and come back to Europe for a couple of weeks next year so we can get married close to our family and friends. I plan to visit on a tourist visa in the meantime, then join him on a spouse visa after we marry.

    Questions

(1)Will there be difficulty in my obtaining a spouse visa to join my fiancé considering he'll be initially going to the US as an unmarried man?

-That is, will the change in his marital status after entering the US on a J1 visa, render it difficult for me to obtain a J2 visa?

    (2) I've seen in some cases that a spouse visa can take a year, would that be the case for a possible J2 visa too?

    (3) Could I work with a J2 visa? I am completing a master's degree and have good work experience behind me so I wouldn't want to idle as his dependent

    (4) Will my entering the US on a tourist visa, then applying for a J2, make it difficult to get the J2? I've never been to the US

Thanks in advance for your insight!
