I had my interview today at the US Embassy in Seoul (South Korea), and the IO was kind enough to make us feel at home and told us not to be nervous at all.

First off he confirmed first all of the information on my application, then he started asking me the 6 questions, made me read a line ("What state has the most people?"), and dictated to write down a sentence.

He took my greencard, punched a hole on it and kept it with the rest of my file.

After that, he made me sign on a couple of papers and handed me a letter telling me when and where the oath-taking will take place.

Congratulations again on everyone who's done with the journey and wishing goodluck to all those who will still be taking the interviews.

Just keep reading the 100 questions and you'll do just fine.

  3. Bryan... to add to what Kim C has said, if you are a military member, your wife may be qualified for overseas naturalization - where your wife won't need to fly back to the US for interview and oath, just have it to the nearest US Embassy, but you would still need to file the application at the Nebraska Office:

    http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis/menuitem.eb1d4c2a3e5b9ac89243c6a7543f6d1a/?vgnextoid=8aa13e4d77d73210VgnVCM100000082ca60aRCRD&vgnextchannel=8aa13e4d77d73210VgnVCM100000082ca60aRCRD

    Good luck.

    Chris

  4. This must mean that your papers are already under review and that the next letter you should be receiving is either a letter for your scheduled interview or an RFE if they need additional documents from you.

If you sent everything that you think they might need, then it must be your interview letter ;) Goodluck on your interview!

Were you able to change your address with them? Call and check again, just to double-check that they sent the letter to the correct address.

    Chris

  5. Hi.

I think I've read here somewhere in the forums that you are supposed to update your address with USCIS everytime you move, being a legal resident.

I would try to use the AR-11 or update my address in their records online - through the USCIS webpage (change online).

Your APO address is your US address, and you should use it as your contact address so it'll be easier for them to reach you or give them a US number if ever you have one. However, after submitting the AR-11, I would still call the USCIS and inform them of the change of address to correct their records with regards to the N-400 application.

Sometimes if they send something to your APO address (this is your US address), it will still take time since you are overseas.

    Goodluck on your application.

    Chris

  7. Thank you for the replies.

Thank you so much "linaj". I will definitely try to send my application hopefully before this month ends if God willing I can collect all the necessary supporting documents. I am still thinking of staying until the application process gets completed. Hopefully it won't be that long, I still have to deal with a lot more stuff - moving us to our next base.

As for the name error, I asked them before and they advised me to submit an application to renew my card due to admin error - which I don't think is a good idea because that will only mean more time to waste, and time and money is of the essence.

Goodluck on your N400 journey, too!

  8. I forgot to add. My name on my permanent resident card is different from my legal name. They placed my whole maiden name plus married name on the card. To which I never got the chance to have it changed/replaced/corrected because we kept on moving (military) and since everyone knows that a PR card is golden.

Do I need to check the option for a name change on the N400 application? To have my legal name be written on my Cizitenship certificate and to correct the error that they did?

    Thanks in advance.

    Chris

  9. Hi!

I am planning to send an N400 application by the end of October or sometime November this year (2009).

Question #1: I would like to ask if anybody here has an idea of how long would the processing be? Should I assume about 6 months? I will be sending my application to the Texas lockbox.

Question #2: We might be moving by the end of this year (2009) or early next year (2010), would it somehow affect my N400 application?

Question #3: Will I be getting my biometrics, interview/test and oath from where I sent it from (Virginia)? or will I be able to get my biometrics, interview/test and oath to where will we be moving (California)?

Question #4: Will they hold on to my application for another 3 months after I moved? (with the 3 month state residency requirement)

Question #5: If I wait to move first before sending my application, do I need to wait the full 3 months state residency requirement? or can I send it in ahead of time, and for how many days in advance?

Question #6: If we wait for the full N400 processing (filing to oath), will kids be any problem if I take them to biometrics, interview and oath? (ages are 5 and 3). I have nobody to look after them and don't really entrust them to babysitters (hubby will be deployed), though oldest child is in school already so only have to worry about one and hoping the scheduled appointments will be during school hours.

Thank you all in advance for your advices!

    Chris

  10. Good day!

We are currently in the middle of waiting for our overseas assignment. I am just wondering if ever anybody here has an experience with filing for N-400 overseas? I have heard of expedited N-400 thru 319b, but it would mean that me and the kids would have to stay behind while we wait for the N-400 process to get done, while I've read thru the USCIS website that they have this new program of processing naturalization for spouses of military members overseas.

Requirements for Naturalization Abroad by Spouses of Members of the U.S. Armed Forces

    http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis/men...0004718190aRCRD

I would like to ask if the processing is pretty much the same.

By the time that we might be getting our assignment/orders, it would also be the same time for me to be eligible to file for my N-400 as well. I am still thinking of whether we should just stay behind and process the N-400 in the States or follow-thru with the assignment and just file the N-400 overseas.

Any idea would definitely help. Thank you in advance.

  11. You didnt get a notice? In what form of a message did they tell you? Unless it is officially from the right govt agency, I probably wouldnt give out any information about myself. There's a lot of people out there fishing for information that can be used for identity theft. Not that I'm trying to scare you. Normally, you will get a letter from the unified court of your state asking you to report/call back and confirm whether you are qualified for jury selection or not. But I hope everything is in order and goodluck on your interview.

If I can remember it right, a family member got a phonecall left on their answering machine and they gave me the name and corresponding number to call back. I called the number and there was this machine automated system stating something about the judicial branch of the "name of the state". It was a government agency all right. I really can't confirm if I did get a letter from my previous residence or just a phonecall, it's been like years ago. And that letter could have already been thrown in the trash already since I don't live there anymore.

I did call back as requested and they requested me just plain info that they already have like name and juror number and current address. That's just about it. I still have the corresponding e-mail and the name and number who I talked to just in case.

Thanks for the concern sakura888. I do hope everything will just work out fine like AusCal said. I am just worried about how I replied back that they might mistake that for misrepresenting to be a USC.

  12. I never got any notice though, somebody just forwarded me the message that I was up for jury duty. I just gave them back a call and told them that I already moved to a different state. I was unaware at the time that only USC were eligible for jury duty and I can't remember if I mentioned to them that I was only LPR and not USC.

They asked me for data (i.e. name, juror name, current address) and I emailed it to them and they just e-mailed me back stating that they have removed me from their list. I just wanted to make sure that they weren't misled to any point that I misrepresented being a USC in that matter just in case they do any kind of background check.

I want to make sure that come interview time, if this comes up that I would be in a position to know what to do and what to answer back with the correct words, and that I will be prepared if ever they ask me something about this.

    Thank you all again.

  13. Hi to all,

I have a question to ask, as I have been also reading threads from other forums and found one thread about an application being denied because he had mistakenly registered to vote in their place by accident not knowing that only citizens are allowed to register to vote. He later on asked to be removed from the voting registry and never voted, but his N-400 was denied and he is right now on the steps for an appeal.

I have another question about something similar. A couple of months after getting my working permit, SSN, driver's license, and green card, we have moved to a different state and one in my family gave me a call telling me that I was chosen for jury duty.

And now that I am trying to prepare my papers for N-400, I came across that voting and serving on a jury are citizen's rights. I did not serve on the jury as previously requested since we have moved to a different state at that time and sent a letter to the jury secretary that we moved, and she removed me from the list.

However, my question comes to this, I did not in any way or matter misrepresented that I am a US Citizen. I was even surprised that I was chosen for jury duty. But will this situation affect in any way my N-400 application come the time, and be denied like the other thread that I've read?

I am at a loss as of the moment and do not know what to do. Should I try and start gathering evidence about how they picked me on a jury duty and prove that I did not misrepresent in any way that I am a USC? Should I or should I not tell this on the interview? Or should I just follow the "don't ask, don't tell" policy? I am just worried of applying now and throwing that big amount of money if the application will just be denied, and another set of money for an appeal is totally crazy.

Thank you for all your thoughts in advance.

    Chris

  14. Wow... thank you for sharing the post.

I think I came across some questions that weren't in the 100 questions listed from the USCIS naturalization test questionaires. Is it possible for the IOs to ask questions that weren't in their questionaires from their website?

Because if that will be the case then we may need to study a lot more than just the 100 basic questions that they have from their list.

    Thanks again.

  15. Thank you all for the reply.

As I have posted before, family aren't really that closeby and friend-network is also a problem. I would entrust them to teachers or daycare if they were already going to school, which is unfortunately not yet as of the moment. And another thing is that, we have left our oldest son before with a family-friend while I gave birth to our second child and it has seemed to have left him traumatized being left with them and we wouldn't want that to happen again.

Hopefully things will go well. I was looking forward to replies of those who have been to their scheduled appointments and who have brought kids with them, but I also greatly appreciate all the replies and suggestion from all of you. I shall try to see and do some of your valued suggestions.

    Goodluck on everybody's journey.

  16. Hi,

I would like to ask a question about taking kids during the interview and also during the oath-taking. Hubby will be gone for deployment by the time that I start the N-400 application by mid this year. I don't have any close friends whom I can leave my kids to or family nearby, nor even hiring a babysitter an option - we don't trust leaving our children to strangers.

I know it'll be hard, I have a 4 and a 3-year old whom I'm planning on taking with me, but it seems like I have no choice. I just wanted to seek advice if it would cause any problem at all. I would like to know in advance and foresee how things will seem to be (since experiences like these are always unpredictable), and it'll be hard to be caught in a situation on-the-spot and not know what to do.

Any insights will be of great help.

    Thank you.

  17. My friend went to mexico with her boyfriend while she was pregnant, and then after the baby was about 2 months old, she came back into the US with her baby. It makes no sense to me why she had the baby in Mexico but she did and now shes wanting her baby to have citizenship here in the U.S.

I am helping her with getting her boyfriend back to the US legally through the K1 process cause thats what I have recently just done with my husband (fiance at that time). But I have no idea on what to do about her baby getting citizenship. Someone told her she has up to a year to get her baby citizenship.

Please let me know what to tell her and what she needs to do to get her baby citizenship.

    Thanks!! =)

I would also say, just get a Consular's Report of Birth from Abroad.. that is, if one of the parent is a USC. I don't think there would be any necessity for any kind of petition at all. I had my son abroad and that was just what we did - got a Consular's report of birth abroad from the US Embassy and also applied for his US passport so we're good to go to US after I got my visa.

IDK though how it would work.. but they might need to go back to Mexico to obtain the CRBA, or they can try calling or send an e-mail if there is a need for physical presence. Here's a link for the US Embassy in Mexico. I hope it helps: http://mexico.usembassy.gov/eng/eacs_birth_abroad.html

    Goodluck.
