mandebm reacted to Sweetmelissa in After POE
I was able to apply for my SSN the day after POE ... just brought my passport and electronic i-94 and had no problems. From what I have read, its recommended to get SSN before getting married, and changing the name on the card later on (if it changes with marriage). Then get married and get ready for AOS paperwork. Good luck!

Agree with sweet cakes, get your SSN, then get married. It used to be that you had to wait at least 14 days after POE to be entered into the CBP -SAVE database. However, with the advent of the electronic I-94, hopefully you should be good to go. Since marriage laws are governed by the states, some states do require an SSN for the marriage application, but it is hit or miss. As sweet cakes mentioned, there are a lot of benefits available to you when you get your SSN promptly.
Good luck on your immigration journey.

That's what we're doing 1st & no, SSN is not required for that.

SSN is not required for a marriage license. But applying for the SSN soon after POE does have a whole lot of benefits like applying for bank account, etc., and it's much faster to get the SSC using the I-94 compared to after receiving your EAD or GC.

It doesn't matter which embassy. The new form is DS160.
