  1. Congrats on getting through the border wait and activating your permanent residency!

For me, I already had a SSN from years ago when I worked in the US. If I remember correctly, they say it takes a max of 3 weeks to get your card, so if you don't get anything by that time you can go to the nearest social security office and get your number.

I'm not sure of the process for a new one and how to follow up on it, if there is a way to check if the forms were sent to the SSN office.

Thanks zuroma, yes part of the DV application on the DS-260 is to check the box to authorized the immigration to forward your information to the SSN office to proceed with the order of generation SSN card, but like I said I was just curious to see how many people actually checked that box and haven't received it.

    Thanks again,

  2. Hello,

Just a quick update we applied for admission to the US today crossing the border by taking the Niagara Falls rainbow bridge, 3 hours of waiting :( before getting called to the window #7 and another 30min waiting the officer to finish the paper work, no single question was asked. He just said: now you're permenant resident of the United state, and that's was all, now the question is should I go and check if the information were sent to the SSN office (as I need the SSN number as soon as possible for my work ) to issue the card, or just just wait for how long?

    Thanks,

  3. Thanks for the detailed post. My husband has his interview Dec 17 in Montreal.

One question- how many days between interview and passport back in your hands?

    Thanks in advance for replying.

    Hi ssastr,

I had my interview in November 6, 2014 and picked up my passport in November 11, 2014 remembrance day, very quick that was a weekend in a middle.

    Thanks

  4. Hello,

Thank god finally we got approved yesterday, and back home toronto from Montreal !!

Here's my journey a big thanks to you guys it's time to give back

We booked a night at square Philips hotel me, my wife and my baby 5min away from the us consulate, got a good night of sleep (I tried :) ), with hotel valet for the car ($20 a day ) and luggage storage, I left everything at the hotel, just took my paper work and some Toys and food for my baby, we arrived around 8:05am our appointment was at 8:30am I don't advice anyone to go earlier then 30min ( thanks zurom999 for the tip ), just one person ahead of us as soon as we lined the guard called us in, a nice lady checked our loomis for the courier service, went through the security check just like the airport, and we head down stair as instructed by the security guard straight to the elevator no escort, we were 4 in the elevator ones at the 19th floor a nice visa receptionist checked our passport and gave us the ticket with the mention of applicant#4 we waited 10min and before been called by a lady ( had a rough morning looks like it :) ) to window #2 , asked my wife (principle applicant) for the passports and the appointment letter and she asked us to go pay the fees, and sit down and wait to be called, after 15min called by the same lady at the window #2 but this time she seems nicer spend almost 20min handing her the documents as she was asking them without the order of the check list, took our fingerprints, asked us to sit and wait to be called, 30min later we got called by a really nice lady to window#7 more privacy room, she asked us to read a consent that was taped on the window, she went through the documents and returned to us the original ones and start asking my wife, how long have you been married? What's your highest level of education? How about your husband? For how long have you been in Canada? Where are you planning to live in us? And why? And after that she start typing on the keyboard computer and said your visa is approved welcome to the United States, I said: that's it ,and she smiled and said: that's it. We were out by 10:10am

Very good experience, no documents was missing or asked in addition what was in the check list, let me give some tips:

1- don't go earlier than 30 minutes from your interview time.

2- if you're married get two copies of your marriage certificate.

3- the interview is very important to you treat it as such and wear a nice outfit (don't be over dressed).

4- don't take anything else then your documents leave everything in the hotel storage if you can.

Good luck to everyone waiting for the interviews.

  7. Thanks for the info Jarodca, I had already opened an account with them! It is useful for all the Canadians (or anyone from other countries that have similar banking situations).

Over 15 years ago, when I was a fresh-faced young lad with no-credit history I went to the US on a work visa. It's surprisingly hard to get a decent credit card, cell phone, or rent an apartment with no history in the US. Banks were offering me only secured credit cards (where you have to have a large deposit on hand). Then finally RBC told me about RBC Bank and I opened an account and got a credit card fairly easily. I eventually built up an excellent credit rating down there.

This time around I've also signed up for a Forex service to convert all my CAD$ into US$ over the next few years whenever the exchange rate is favorable.

    Good luck on your journey!

    Hi Zuroma999,

A quick question for you did anyone in the consulate asked you for Affidavit of support (I-134)? or you just have to have enough in your back account? in that case how much is enough to cover the family of 3 persons ?

    Thanks,

Thanks, looks like you got there first, I'll will be taking advice from you from now on :), I was thinking about how to convert my CAD$ to US$ with a good rate ( ones I got approved in November 6, let's hope so).

And I was looking for the good website to track my credit score as well.

    Take care

  9. Good luck with your interview. There were about 6 kids from different families there ranging from 2 years old to 10. Over the 2 hours I was there, 3 different infants (a few weeks/months old) came through as their parents were applying for passports for them.

There was the occasional baby crying or toddler talking or playing loudly. Not much you can do, so don't worry too much, and the receptionist there (the only one in the same area as the waiting room) seemed very friendly and understanding of all the noise. There is a tiny play area with some children's books and toys. The kids were playing with each other and mostly quiet. There is also a vending machine with some chips and chocolate bars that some parents needed to use to bribe their kids.

Thank you zuroma999, I think i saw somewhere that you said you're a Canadian citizen? If so here's something I found really interesting ( it could be the case for you too) about the banking and the credit history build in US, I do my banking with RBC and recently I called RBC in US to get information and benefit of opening an account with them in the south border, after almost an hour with RBC in canada and in the US over the phone I believe that will be a great start to get with start with them, why? For those reasons:

1- the account can be opened in canada in any branch for the US based chequing account and credit card, or over the phone with RBC US, and since they do have all you information already (if you're a client) you don't have to provide anything (you can provide your US SSN to apply for credit card or line of credit, mortgage if you have it, if not you can added it later) and you can start build your credit history by applying to credit cards ...

2- if you do have an account here you can link them and transferring the money between the two country is free via RBC , http://www.rbcbank.com/banking-in-the-us/checking-accounts/index.html

3- when you apply for credit card or loan mortgage ..., they can use your Canadian Social Insurance Number (SIN) to access your Canadian credit file and get the information we need to approve your application. Once your loan account is opened, you're building a credit history in the U.S. However, to ensure that your credit file is complete and reported accurately, you'll need a United States Social Security Number (SSN).

I found that interesting I though I share it here, I hope that will be helpful.

Thanks for sharing your experience again

Thanks, my interview is at 8:30am and my hotel is 5min away walking you think is better if I show up 15 min before rather then 7:30am? Like everyone was saying they did?

  12. Adald,

According to their website you don't have to provide the police certificate for your period of residency in the US

    http://travel.state.gov/content/visas/english/immigrate/diversity-visa/if-you-are-selected/prepare-supporting-documents.html

Note: Present and former residents of the United States should NOT obtain any police certificates covering their residence in the United States.
