  1. The last questions (?) on the DS-260 form are about social security numbers. If I answered yes to "do you have an ssn" and provided the number, is there any reason why I would want a new card issued? It just seemed like an odd question to have there so I was wondering if I was missing anything...

    Thanks!

  2. Hi everyone,

I've just started filling out the DS260 form and I realized my passport is expiring on the 10th of June 2015. I'm not sure my number will be called before then (very unlikely that it will). What do I do? I guess I should just fill out the DS260 form with my current document, but should I try to get a new document before the expiration date and get them to reopen my ds260 to add that? I'm pretty sure Romania stopped doing passport extensions since moving to the biometric passports, though I can always ask the consulate I guess..

    Thanks!

  3. So, my CN is a bit high and I think it would be safer to do CP, but if I decide to switch to AOS I can email them and they can do that for me? I wanted to start my DS260 today but got freaked out because it asked me where I want my interview and I'm not sure what to answer (I'd love AOS, but not if it means I'll miss my chance and I heard that if your number is high enough there is a chance of that happening).

  4. Hi

I am a little bit confused

I am a DV 2015 winner, I filled DS 260 form and submitted it and almost prepared the required civil documents required which mentioned in the site "http://travel.state.gov/content/visas/english/immigrate/diversity-visa/if-you-are-selected/prepare-supporting-documents.html"

but it's not mentioning the need of "Affidavit of Support"

Do I have to prepare it or it's not mandatory ?

I believe the conclusion was that it is not mandatory, as long as you prove that you have enough money to not become "a public charge". I think I read on this forum that that sum is only $10,000.

  5. hey

i am a winner at dv 2015 my cas num is AF22000 i don't have the passport yet maybe in October i get one bcz it take time in my country so do i have time or not to submit the ds260 .i mean what the deadline . and i have another question i don't have the day and the month in birth certificate its just 1989 what should i put in the ds260 . and thank you .

There is no deadline. As long as they've not run out of visas and next September (2015) has not come (it might be August or July, but anyway you're alright).

Not sure about the birth date, I'd call them and ask to be honest.

  6. You didn't put your country etc. You also didn't specify which parent you are (your avatar looks male, and your quoted legal document says the wife has custody, so I'm not sure: do you have the custody?)

Anyway, the EU has this policy that they won't allow one parent to remove the child from the country without the other parent's approval (I know because I've come face-to-face with it and almost missed a wonderful vacation because I was 17 and nobody notified us about this). I'm sure other places have similar rules.

Not sure how it works if only one parent has custody, but it's definitely a thing to ask both the US consulate and the border patrol or whatever authority allows people to exit/enter the country. Because, the US might not care but your country might, or the opposite might be true. The consulate will also tell you if you need that document to the interview.

  7. Hi,

Many DV selectees here successfully pass the interviews by showing bank accounts. I assume that my interview will be in in October, but I am sorry that I don;t have enough money in the bank. I have somewhere arond $4000. What do you think, will it be enough to show at the interview for my, my son and my spouse? We don't have any other real estates to show. Also can speaking English be considered as a plus at the interview, cos many people from my country immigrate to the US with no language skills?

$4,000 for 3 people is very, very low. I think you should figure out if you can get a sponsor/job offer or something?

  8. Whoa, I do not have any relative in the US, and I would feel like ####### asking for such a huge favor out of anybody here that I'm friends with; I barely even ask people to be my emergency contact, let alone my financial backing in case I end up starving on the streets. Honestly, depending on what the consequences are for the sponsor, I'd be weary of sponsoring anyone, and I hate asking people for things I know I'd have second thoughts about.

By the time of the filing, I will have $10k USD in my savings account and a job paying $60+k a year in a very lucrative field. I'd really rather not ask anyone for favors.

But let's assume I can, cause I've been here 7 years and know people here. What about people that are like I was 7 years ago? No relatives in the US, no family friends in the US, nada. Would having a job offer here and money in your savings account, but not knowing anyone mean your dreams don't come true? That sucks.. and they should make it known before you actually submit the lottery application.

P.S. Do you think I can get my employer to do the Affidavit? They're willing to sponsor the H1B, but I haven't started work yet and I haven't told them I won the DV yet either (and am planning to wait a bit on it). Or does it have to be one person?

  9. Hi All,

My number is EU 30XXX. When is the latest I should apply?

I actually have a similar concern, though in theory you just need to apply in time to be called for an interview. I'm planning to submit the application as soon as I get my OPT card, which will be some time in September, but my interview is next May/June so I can file any time before say, February. Since our numbers are very similar, I say you're in the same boat.

  10. If you're doing AOS, you should be fine. But don't do AOS unless your number is reasonably low...

I have read that to mean at least high school degree. A master's degree from a US university should count way more than a high school degree from another country (if only because you know what that person studied and that it's exactly what Americans study). In general anyway, a university degree should prove you're educated enough to find a job and contribute to society.

(Parenthetically, what if you were home-schooled and then went on to go to college and maybe get your PhD? How can that make you not good enough?! I had lots of friends in college, Americans though, that had been home-schooled, so would have had no high school diploma to speak of).

Them saying you don't qualify because of that would be ludicrous, and I doubt they'd do it. Be respectful and nice, and explain your situation if asked specifically for a high school diploma. Explain that you qualified for a bachelor's degree and did well enough to get into a master's program.

That being said, I wish you luck! I was super panicky about finding my (otherwise useless, because who else cares except USCIS) Romanian high school diploma, so I do understand being scared about missing your chance over something stupid...

  11. judging by the visa bulletin for 2014 my chances are less than good.

Well, the DV bulletin for August 2014 says 40,150, which I don't think is that bad. I think that they'll get to current in September, though I'm mostly basing it off of it getting to current every year for the past 10 years or so...

  12. current

Current means that at the end e everybody got an interview and that month they estimated they would have visas for all the remaining participants. So, unless something unexpected happened, everybody who passed the interview got the visa.

  13. I would hold off submitting your DS260 (actually, that's exactly what I'm doing), but depending on your case I guess you might have to submit it if your number is likely to become current. In other words, if your number is high enough, you could plausibly hold back from submitting the form before you come back..
