  1. Hi!

I am hoping the original poster will see this and respond...that or somebody else from Sweden that has been in our same position. We just received the same RFE asking for a marriage certificate. We, too, have already sent in the document from the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket). It appears they think this to be insufficient, even though this is an official document that shows that we are married.

I am wondering how things have gone for you since sending back your RFE? What document(s) did you end up sending back with the RFE and were you approved?

This is so frustrating and must be a problem that many Swedes encounter. I wrote up a 2 page letter that I will send to the director of the Nebraska Service Center, where our case is, explaining our situation and requesting that USCIS contact Skatteverket to come up with a solution to this problem. We'll see if they pay any attention to that ;-)

Anyway, hope I get some responses. Thanks in advance!!

  2. Hi,

We filed in early March and got our NOA1 March 10th. Ours is at NSC, and in my opinion they are slightly backlogged. Here (http://www.visajourney.com/content/times) it shows that they are currently working on cases dated March 28th and the little graph to the right shows that they are about 60% complete with March cases (based on info. provided by VJ members). It has been a little over 6 months for us now, and we have heard absolutely nothing from NSC. I consider our case to be very straightforward, so I find this very frustrating. In doing some research on this site I found a forum thread where a man who used to work at NSC described their process. According to him at the time (the thread was old, from like 2007/2008) the "agents" pick a box of files to work on for the day...but it was a random box from the shelf (I assume they are at least boxed by month, though), so if the box your file is in doesn't get picked up, or you have a slow agent, your file could end up being processed a little later than others. So, it seems like you need a little luck on your side to have quicker processing. On the USCIS website it shows processing times for NSC at 5 months, but I spoke with an agent a few days ago who said it usually "takes much longer" because they have so many cases coming in right now....but at least VJ shows that 60% of March cases have been completed within a 5-6 month period.

  3. I don't believe he, alone, would have the 40 quarters, but he can also use quarters from me from the time we were both working in the U.S. after we were married. I need to figure out how to calculate the quarters, and I was under the impression that I needed to get a formal (documented) calculation from an SSA office to submit with the I-864W. So, it's the figuring out how to calculate, and finding out what I can offer for documented evidence that I was hoping someone could offer guidance with. The ssa website does offer some guidance with this, but it looks like you do need to submit something official from the office as well. I finally found a decent website that explains things relatively well for others that might be in the same boat:

    http://www.immigrationlinks.com/news-archives/affidavit-of-support-public-charge/546-40-quarters-of-social-security-credits-in-lieu-of-form-i-864

    Thanks for your responses Boiler

  4. oops..I used the word, "credits", instead of "quarters". Thanks for pointing that out! It was written on a tired brain ;-) It does not look like I can still edit the post, so I hope my mistake does not put people off from replying (those that have had prior experience with the aforementioned form).

If it wasn't clear, I understand that he needs 40 quarters (I used the word, "credits" by mistake). My intention with the question was more to receive some guidance in the process of filing an I-864W. Thanks!

  5. Hi,

I am trying to prepare for NVC, and believe that my husband and I will be able to claim exemption from filing Form I-864, as he lived and worked as an LPR in the U.S. for several years before we moved to Sweden (his work credits added to mine after we were married should reach the required 40 credits). I am wondering if anybody has had any experience with filing this particular form (I-864W)? The link provided to SSA.gov on the I-864 instruction sheet does not seem to work unfortunately, and that would have explained how to go about calculating your work credits and what evidence/documentation to gather. Thanks in advance for any guidance with this!
