  1. I think she needs the SSN for payroll purposes (companies need it). Have you contacted your local SS office for this?

Do you mean have I contacted them about her working? No I haven't. But I have been there with her trying to get a SSN.

Anyhow, she's getting ready to send some applications in and I just wanted to know if that was going to be a problem considering it would be a while before we could get her passport.

  2. The only reason you may want SSN in the first 75 days after arrival is to deal with banks that want a number to add her to your account, or in some states they insist that both parties signing a marriage license are required to have a SSN, it is also needed to apply for a driving license.

In order to work your wife needs EAD or Green-Card, SSN is NOT work authorization, if wife has work auth (EAD or Green-card) from USCIS the employer can hire but will request the SSN for tax reporting reasons.

EAD or Green-card can be used to get SSN

She has her Green Card (sorry, forgot to say that!) and we tried to get her SSN with her green card but they said they needed her passport as well (they were very friendly and tried to find another way and we had copies and things like that). I was told by my friend that she ABSOLUTELY had to have her SSN before she started work.

    Thanks again!!

  3. Hey guys,

    1. My mom is joint sponsoring my wife. And I, with only a part time job, am the other joint sponsor. Should we just be combined on the I-864 or submit 2 of them?

    2. When it says " I ___________ am the sponsor submitting this affidavit of support because (Check only one box):" What box should my mother check? (I know I check the first one).

    3. Can anyone explain Part 3 to me?

Thanks everyone...I'm sure I'll have more questions later!!

  4. We just got back from the civil surgeon. We were taking care of her shot records etc. Then the doctor asked if we need the physical done, I told him no that we had one done in Thailand. He said that sometimes immigration wanted a physical in the home country AND in America. How are we supposed to know if we're supposed to get one here? And if we have to get one here why did we get one in her country?

  5. Did you file her AOS papers in her new name?? doing that will ensure that her EAD and her greencard are in her married name and not her maiden name....

    Kez

Yes thank goodness. I had a lady at the county building here tell me that after we were married we didn't have to do anything to change her last name and that it would automatically (magically I guess) change...theat didn't sound right to me and I almost filed them under her maiden name!

  6. I can't find any info on getting a work visa for a kickboxer (from Thailand) to come over and help train my gym. Does anyone know where to start? I have been trying to find something on the government web site but it just gets confusing, can anyone help?

  7. Can she contact her doctor in her home country? Joel didn't have his either when he came home, so we called his doctor and they allowed his mom to pick up a copy of his vaccination record. She mailed it to us and then we were able to get the I-693a filled out with no problems. :)

I'm not sure, we were at some little hospital in Chiang Mai Thailand. Her family lives in an Akha village in the jungle at the VERY north of Thailand. We will try to get them I suppose but if we can't we can have them redone here right?

  8. She should have got a copy of her vaccination record from the doc that did her medical in her home country....

She will need this information to get the I-693a (vaccination Supliment) from a civil surgeon here in the states....

You will need to try and get a copy of her vaccination record...

    Kezzie

Great...how do I go about doing that?

Can we just have them redone here if we can't get her records?

  9. First of all, let me tell you how the confusion started...

We came from Thailand to San Francisco (PoE), she handed the "brown envelope" to the immigration officer and got nothing back from him. Anyhow, that was on July 6th and we just recently got legally married here on September 5th. So here are my questions:

1.) Was he supposed to give her something back?

2.) If he was what are we supposed to do now?

    3.) What is a I-94?

4.) Now that we are legally married she is here to stay right? I mean, how long can she stay legally without sending in the AoS paperwork?

5.) Lastly, can we go and get her a SSN now? And after she gets the SSN can she get a state ID?

I tried to do a search for most of this and it brought up nothing (I suck at computers and computer related things!). Any answers anybody can give me is GREATLY appreciated!

    Thanks again!
