  1. no, i mean my county courthouse. not yours. never, ever yours.

    ok thanks, it's really helpful.

Not country, but county, when you move to the US, find the county courthouse and start there

    good luck

    thanks ma'am really appreciate.
  2. You will get to the US , go to the local court and file forms to request a legal name change. They vary slightly from state to state. You may a small fee and there may be an official posting you pay for ( to give people a chance to object , mostly a formality ) then you will go to court ( maybe ) for a day and the judge will decide that you can change your name, They rarely object unless you want to change your name to GOD or "the president" or something else silly. You will then be issued a paper that shows that you have hanged you name and you can use this paper to do changes for all other documents I am not sure about your Nigerian passport.

oh! Thanks awesome brother...your wonderful. Your rejoinder has given me a great relief, it's helpful...gracias. God bless.
  3. IN the US you can ask the court for a legal name change , pay a fee and then use that court paper to request that your green card and other documents be changed. But you will always be required to accurately report you old names when requested as "other names used" A marriage licience is considered a document requesting a neame change acknowledged by the courts so married women present that to change their name. Here you can not just change your name and generate new ID's at will.

wow! Thanks for this awesome reply...I really appreciate this... So please can I do it as soon as I get to the US or is it after I get the documents with the old names and latter apply for re-issue of the documents? Pls I'm waiting for your response. Thanks Sir
  4. start at the county courthouse, file with the judge.

Once you have the court order,

then go around (in person or postal mail) to the entities that have your name, telling them of the legal name change.

In some instances, changing it is free, other entities will want you to pay a fee.

did you mean my country courthouse? Or as soon as I get to the US? Because It would be my first time in US...no ssn or green card ever issued! Thanks in anticipation.
  5. You would need to take an updated DS-160 application with passport and new amended birth certificate to the embassy. This could delay you since they may want to do some checking and background checks. They are the ones that will be issuing your Visa. Unless they know it will be in the name on the application.

thanks for your kind rejoinder, the visa has already been issued and in my possession but with the names I used to apply. The issue is I have a family problem and would change my names....just so I want to have all my docs: ssn, green card, drivers license as a new immigrant planning to relocate in april with my new names. So i need help on how to go about it when I get there(indianapolis) in april. Thanks in anticipation.
  6. How are you changing your name?

There are processes and procedures for a legal name change, you cannot just decide to use a different name and get your official, legal documents issued in that name. It sounds to me like it would be costlier, but better to get to the US first, do the official name change, then get your papers re-issued.

thanks for your kind response, really appreciate. Pls where are you? I'm headed indianapolis come april 2014. Please I need you to put me through on how to go about the official name change in the US. Thanks in anticipation. God Bless.
  7. Can you explain what you mean with "new name"? How is it different from your old name, and why are you changing?

thanks for ur response, I'm changing my names due a family issue... And the new names are completely different from the ones I ve on my visa. And I want all the documens i would be collecting for my residency in indianapolis(state security number, green card, drivers license......) to be in my new names....so I'm asking how to go about it. Thanks
  8. Easiest way would be to have your DV issued in the new name, is this possible?

For example, married women would produce their marriage certificate and request the visa be issued in the married name.

    good luck

thanks for ur kind rejoinder... The visa has been issued already. But I'm changing my names which are completely different from the ones I have on the visa. Thanks
