  1. Just a little advice, do not cross your fingers for "good luck" in Vietnam. Because it means something very different in Vietnam, and it is an easy way to shock and offend people instantly. Basically holding up the middle finger represents the male body part, and crossing the fingers represents the female -- and they convey a similar message!

  2. My fiance received the letter from the US consulate instructing her to apply for DS-160. It just that the people who is helping her with the steps is telling her she does not have to send in the confirmation page and have any documents translated.

Frontgear, did your fiance follow all the steps from the instructions? What was the interview experience like?

We had our interview a little over a week ago and we did not get anything translated. I can't absolutely guarantee it but I think the people advising your wife are correct.

  3. Like Rich said chances are 100%. I am 51 and Linh is 37 and she has been here for 5 months now. No red flags and in my "older age" we are trying at children! Good luck in the process don't fret about any RFE's they happen and cause delays... don't be bashful to ask questions all will be fine!

You might have kids sooner than you think. We already have a 2 month old son and we are going to try and wait 2 years before having another.

  4. Hi all, I am on the same boat and need your help.

    1) I am not in VN right now, do I need to be there with my wife and daughter (they are in VN right now) for the CRBA appointment?

    2) My daughter has a Vietnamese name right now, when is the best time to get her name change to English and how without delaying getting her visa?

    Many thanks!

Sorry that I am so late in responding. You do need to be there for the CRBA. They could require a DNA test, and they will want to interview both of you. We didn't bother changing our sons name. I think that it is best to make the name changes after you get to the US, otherwise it could cause problems at the airport. That is why we decided to wait.

  5. I want to thank everybody for the help. We did not change the Vietnam birth certificate, and we did not change his name on the Consular Report, so he still has a Viet name. But that is fine. We can easily change his name in the US (add an American name). Anyway we got the Consular Report of a Birth Abroad approved without any problems or any need for a DNA test (He is a big baby -- I am a big guy -- and he looks like both of us).

Now we only need to get Mai's visa and we will be done! But neither of us have been previously married so I don't think that there will be any problem.
