Did they ask for the 2012 return or last years return. If they asked for the 2012, you should provide it. But as you say the 2012 does not meet 125%, you will also need to provide 2013 return and proof of current employment. Employment letter, pay stub etc.
If he files as soon as he gets the W-2, you should have your returns early Feb.
