  1. Updating my timeline...

Finally, my immigration journey is now over after almost 6 years here in the US! I would like to thank this site and all the people who helped me during this entire process.

    Goodluck to you all!

  2. Thanks! Perhaps they would schedule us the same time since we were interviewed same day.

I was actually a little paranoid last night when you said you got the 'congratulations' note and mine was 'a decision cannot be made'. I wasted my energy thinking about it just to get an email this morning that I'm scheduled for an oath ceremony. So, don't waste your time overthinking things and just relax. Besides, I will take the officer's word for it that it should not be an issue.

Congratulations, I have not gotten anything yet.

Hopefully my speeding ticket won't be an issue, the IO told me it shouldn't be but I am a little bit paranoid.

  3. Congrats! Hmmm I was just given a verbal 'congratulations'. The officer ticked the 'A decision cannot yet be made - pending SIT/CIV registration' box instead of 'Congratulations....'

    Hi,

My experience in Chicago was similar, I arrive on time, went to the first floor and could not get my biometrics since the system was down so I went to the third floor, wait for my turn 15 minutes and went inside with my IO.

    These were the questions:

-We elect a senator for how many years?

-If the president and vice-president can no longer serve who will be in charge?

-How many justices are there in the supreme court?

-Name one branch of the government.

-What happened in the declaration of independence?

    -What does the cabinet do?

-I was asked to read "What country is the south of the US?" and to write "Mexico is south of the US"

I passed, we went through my N-400, I amended it with a speeding ticket, everything went ok and was given the "congratulation" note.

Now I have a question, how long until I am put "in queue for oath"?

  4. Thanks! I'm sorry I must have confused you with my previous post. I did my biometrics on December 2013. I was talking about the registration process prior to my interview (but since I was late I had to do it after) wherein they printed me using my L and R index fingers and took my picture. I believe that is part of the interview process.

Wow two months and you haven't heard anything regarding her biometrics? That is kindda long because I remember being scheduled for mine in less than a month. Perhaps, your office is taking longer than mine to process N-400. Hopefully, your mom will get hers scheduled soon.

    Congratulations, title2013IL!!!

So, you had your biometrics done on the same day of the interview? Is that pretty standard in some offices? I am asking because my mom, who is also applying for naturalization, is still waiting for her biometrics. It's been two months already.

  5. Yeah I was super stress! All I could think about was worst case scenario - they would turn me away and that I had to re-schedule my interview. And also thinking that I should have given myself ample amount of time for this interview, like you said.

But I am really glad that they did not give me a hard time and passed my interview.

Good luck with your interview on Wednesday.

Thank you for sharing your interview experience! Must have been stressful being stuck in traffic... I'm planning on giving PLENTY of time for So Cal traffic next Wednesday. i don't care if I have to sit in my car in the parking lot for an hour.

  6. Hi everyone,

I just want to share my interview experience today at downtown, Chicago. Due to heavy traffic, I got to the USCIS building 30 minutes after my scheduled interview. I was worried that they won't let me in since I was a little late. But, the officer was so nice and told me that it was fine and he let me in. I went straight to the registration area - located on first floor of the building. When I got there I was told that the fingerprint system was down. The guy/officer who works there told me to go straight to my interview (3rd floor) and just come back for my registration afterwards. I went there and was called for my interview less than 15 minutes later. The officer made me raise my right hand and swear to tell the truth and nothing but the truth. She also asked me for my interview letter, driver's license, green card, and my passport. And then she started my interview with the civic test which I all answered correctly. She told me that I passed that part. Below are the questions the officer asked me.

    1. What is one promise you make when you become a United States Citizen?

    - Give up loyalty to other countries

    2. Who is your State Governor?

    - Pat Quinn

    3. Who was the first president?

    - George Washington

    4. What movement tried to end racial discrimination?

    - Civil Rights movement

    5. Where is the Statue of Liberty?

    - New York Harbor

    6. Name two national U.S. holidays?

    - Christmas Day and Labor Day

The officer then test my writing and speaking skills in English, and I passed both. Then asked some basic questions like 'What's your birthday?', What's your address?' etc. The officer then asked me to verify that all info in the form she filled up was correct - I think those information will be shown in my naturalization certificate. However, she told me that she could not approve my application since I haven't registered downstairs. Then she advised me to either come back and register or wait until the system comes back up. I was already there so I decided to go back on 1st floor and learned that one of the two systems is up and running. The line was kindda long so it took me at least 20 minutes to finish this process - registration, fingerprint (L and R index finger), and picture. I then went back upstairs to return/ give my interview letter. I was told that I should get a letter within 2-3 weeks for my oath schedule.

Overall, my interview experience did not take long and it was not hard as I thought it was going to be. Now, I just need to wait for that letter and my journey as permanent resident will come to an end after almost 6 years of living here in the US.

  7. Updating my timeline - received my interview letter today. Thanks!

  8. Only US consulates can issued/refused a visa application, not some officers at POE. They can, of course, say no to people come to US with their visas on hands but I never heard they can refused visas at POE. That's different situation.

    Exactly my thought! good.gif

I am glad I've found this thread because I helped my sister with her DS-160. And I told her to say NO despite of her recent tourist visa denial because of how I understood the question. And she already forwarded her application to the US Embassy the other day. The question is just too confusing even for native american speaker like my friend.I asked him and agreed with me the first time he heard it. And then I read your reply to him and re-read the question and then he said you are right.

I will just ask my sister to call the US Embassy and let them know what happened. It was an honest mistake and hopefully they won't give her a hard time.

  9. Okay, this thread is very confusing lol. Yeah, in most instances you can't edit the DS-160 after it's been submitted. But, there's a loophole.

Do you have your application ID number? How long has it been since you submitted the DS-160?

If you have the number, and it has been less than 30 days since you submitted the form, go to the CEAC website, and click "retrieve application". The system will prompt you to "create new application", select this, and your previous application should come up. You can submit the form again and and print a new cover page and bar code. You should submit both the previous and the new cover pages to the embassy (or bring them to the interview, whichever your consulate requires).

If it's been more than 30 days, I don't know the fix, sorry. If you don't have your application ID number, I think you need to be able to recall your answers to the security questions that were set at the time you registered your account.

The wording is broken up like this:

    Have you ever:

    (a) been refused a US visa; or

    (b) been refused admission to the United States; or

© withdrawn your application for admission at the Port of Entry

As long as either (a) or (b) or © holds true, the answer should be "yes" - so the OP should have selected "yes" for this question since his fiance was refused a US visa.

No. If you paraphase this sentence it should look like this: been refused a US visa at the Port of Entry; been refused admission to the US at the Port of Entry; and withdrawb your application for admission at the Port of Entry

  10. if my fiancee made a mistake doing the DS 160 and she submitted it, what will happen, can we re- do it again??

We are confused with this question:

Have you ever been refused a US visa, or been refused admission to the United States or withdrawn your application for admission at the Port of Entry??/

We answer NO, but in 2007 she was refuse a visa from college and 2010 they refuse a tourist visa because she hadnt strong tie in DR, now we are nervous and dont know what to do, because, that made us confused,

so Any advise would be good.

the other question is: Has Anyone ever filed an immigrant petition on your behalf with USCIS ... we put no.. is that one correct??

.Omg I need your help please...

Have you ever been refused a US visa, or been refused admission to the United States or withdrawn your application for admission at the Port of Entry -

I think you are okay in this one saying NO because the question is 'refused at the PORT OF ENTRY' which means here in the US and not in the US Embassy where the interview took place. Correct me if am wrong. Thanks.

  12. That attorney is out of his mind.

Here's what the USCIS field manual says: http://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/ilink/docView/SLB/HTML/SLB/0-0-0-1/0-0-0-29/0-0-0-101/0-0-0-434.html#0-0-0-1191

Examples of not having good moral character would be being a habitual drunkard, deriving most of ones' income from gambling, or engaging in prostitution.

I think that attorney is either clueless, or hoping you are so you can pay for his next European vacation. rolleyes.gif

There are some references online to adultery being an issue, if it broke up a marriage, but that isn't relevant in your case. What's more, I'm not convinced that is even accurate, I don't see it in the USCIS field manual (which was recently revised).

I am a law school graduate, although I don't practice law. I am dead certain your pregnancy, your living arrangements, and/or the intersection of the two will have no negative effect on your naturalization application. Rest easy.

    Best,

    Jon

PS: The 'child out of wedlock' might have been an issue back at the dawn of time. Perhaps that attorney graduated law school in 1955. rofl.gif BTW, our son was born ~7 months before we were married.

Now I can really relax while waiting for my interview. It's tough to think about these things while I'm pregnant. Thanks so much for this response.

  13. Your pregnancy/who you are living with has no bearing on your citizenship application or eligibility. I'm assuming you are filing under the 5 year rule, so your previous marriage has nothing to do with your N-400. The USCIS aren't morality police - no one cares who you are sleeping with or having kids with.

Yes I am applying under 5 year rule. That's what I thought too but just need more input because I also posted this question in other site and one lawyer said that I have to get representation. Thanks!

  14. I have a question and should have asked this the first time I've posted. Here is my situation:

I got divorce in 2010 and filed for 10 year green card afterwards. I moved in with my bf, several months after I got divorce, and been living with him since. We've learned about my pregnancy last August and I became eligible to file for N-400 last November 2013. I filed for N-400 same month without thinking when will my interview gonna be. Now I am wondering if my pregnancy will be a problem during my interview since it is gonna be obvious. Just in general, will I have difficulty with my N-400 application? I have no criminal records nor traffic tickets since I got here in the US. Been working too as soon as I received my employment authorization.

    Thanks and appreciate any input.

  15. Just want to update my N-400 timeline. I received a notice of action - I-797 C today, but it has no biometrics appointment noted anywhere in said form. It only shows my date of birth and my address and ask for me to make sure that both are correct. And then, it also says 'upon receipt of all required Record Checks, you will be scheduled to appear for an interview'. Does it mean I'm gonna get a separate notice for my biometrics? Thanks in advance.
