  2. When my husband first came here to the US in 2011 he had difficulties too finding a bank. His sister works in the entertainment industry and she was able to help him open an account with First Entertainment Credit Union. He was able to open a savings and checking account even without submitting a utility bill, well he didn't have anything to his name coz he's a new immigrant but he has a job already when he applied. He did get an ATM/debit card too.

He also tried applying for a credit card to bigger banks like Citi, Chase and BOA but it was declined. It was only Capital One who approved him. The credit limit was only $500 but really not bad. Every month he pays his dues ahead of the due date coz he really wants to build and maintain a good credit score.

You can do that? Have an account in a different bank and a credit card from a different bank?

I am so sorry i am new to banking stuff.

I thought you can only have the credit card of the same bank where you have your checking account?

  3. Do you really need a bill in your name to open a joint checking account with your USC spouse? I understand the need for a SSN.

As for building up a credit score of your own, you can open a secured credit card. It's a credit card for people with no credit history. You deposit a certain amount with the bank and that is usually your credit limit. The amount doesn't go to paying your bill, it's basically a security deposit. After using this card for several months and paying it in full every month your credit score goes up.

Opening a couple cards or a store card also helps build up a credit score. The trick is use only a small fraction of the available credit and pay it off in full each month. So use it to pay for gas or food or something you know you can afford each month.

Thankyou so much for the helping :)

I have some confusions hope you clear them

Q1. To obtain a Credit Card you need to have a credit history but as a new immigrant I have none, so for me it is Necessary to have secured Credit Card then after some months with timely payments, I can obtain a normal credit card (all other than secured ones).

Q2. Can I get a store credit card (example Target Store Red Card) without any credit history? If yes will this help in building a credit score?

Q3. When opening a new bank checking account for an individual whether chase or bank of america, you need to have bill in your name?

  4. Thankyou everyone

I am sorry i should have been clear with my question, I know just opening accounts won't build a credit score. You need a credit card.

What i mean to ask which bank should I go for opening an account then get get a credit for it?

I have noticed a lot people in the States prefer Chase but isn't Bank Of America equally good?

Wont a Bank Of America credit card help me built my credit score if i pay on time?

  5. Hey everyone :)

Me and my mother are in big confusion as to when one can get health/medical insurance in USA being an immigrant?

What are the requirements? Can you even get it while being an immigrant or do you have to be a citizen?

What i mean to say is that when can one apply for health insurance in USA while being an immigrant

    Please please help me :)

  6. Thankyou so much Everyone for replying

Highly recommended. I flew them myself. They have new planes and great service. You are fine as long as you stay in transit area. The airport is brand new and have lots of comfly lounge chairs.

Is their a restricted transit area type of thing or you can roam at the airport to purchase from shops inside the airport? I am sorry this will be my first time travelling internationally , so I am really nervous.

BTW have anyone of you guys have visited the Virgin Megastore in Hammad International Airport (Qatar Airport) ? Can people who are waiting for the next flight visit that store because I am planning to buy some music albums from their?

  7. I have flown on Qatar airways before but not after immigration, it was a regular trip. I loved Qatar airlines and had a great experience with them. I don't think it makes a difference which airline you fly with to get to the United States after immigration.

You don't need a visa to wait in the Qatar airport. A visa is only needed if you plan to exit the airport.

No matter how long the wait is..you still don't need a visa of Qatar unless you wish to exit the airport?

Is it true if a wait is of 12 hours then you need a visa?

    and Thanks for the reply

  8. She can technically go back the next day, as long as she is domiciled in the USA (taxes filed as resident etc)

Sorry to make this post come to life again :D

I wanted clear my query with some more detail to it and will be delighted if anyone answers

Our case is F1 (Family First Preference) , Petitioner is my mother's mother (i.e my grandmother).

My mother is the principal beneficiary while I am the dderivativeone.

Moreover my Aunt (Mother's sister) is the financial sponsor because my grandmother doesn't earn so my aunt has provided all the financial documentation and has taken the responsibility of financial matters on her.

My aunt and my grandmother both live in the same house.

Now due to some personal problem my grand mother isn't convinced to move to USA right now, she is in Pakistan currently and she is US Citizen. So is it necessary for her to be in USA while we move to USA? Isn't my aunt being there enough?

  9. The two previous posters provided helpful information, but I'm not sure why they said adjustment of status does not apply to you. Adjustment of status is the process by which someone who is already in the US on a valid visa becomes a permanent resident. It is not only for those applying through marriage. For example, if you are on a H1b work visa and your employer sponsors you for a green card, you go through adjustment of status to get your green card. This allows you to "adjust" your status from that of a noninmigrant to an immigrant without leaving the country and applying for an immigrant visa. Similarly, if you are sponsoring a relative who is already in the US on some form of visa, they can adjust their status in most cases to become green card holders (permanent residents). If the applicants are already outside the coubtry, then AOS does not apply. Maybe the previous posters realized that this is the case and I'm just not reading your post right.

If I've moaunderst your situation or if I've got something wrong, maybe you or the others an correct me.

So maybe I just don't understand who is sponsoring whom in your case. Who is the U.S. citizen, who is applying for a green card and on what basis, and where do the people involved currently live (US or abroad)?

But we are in Pakistan my mother (principle beneficiary) , me and my brother (derivative beneficiary).

So after going to USA we don't have to go for AOS?

  10. That will vary a lot depending on where you live. The federal minimum wage is $7.25/hour, but in more expensive parts of the country you'll likely get more (but the increased cost of living will make it even out).

Depends on the location, the type of role taken and experience. A lot of salesy jobs have low wages with commission on top. Minimum wage varies from state to state.

I would like to know for the State of Texas, I am not just asking particularly for a sales job or cash counter but for other part time jobs too. :)

  11. Hey everyone whatsup? :)

Hey guys I wanted to ask what is an average salary for a part time job in USA. You know like studying and also doing a job side by side.

Obviously an undergraduate will not get a professional job , he will get jobs like salesperson etc, etc, so what is the salary for those jobs? I am asking this because I want to keep my expectations real.

  12. I have done a lot of reading but I still end up confused.People here are really helpful and I hope you all will help me :)

I want to ask some simple questions.

Q1. Our case is F1 (Unmarried/Widow Daughter with 2 children) which is My Mother , Me (son) , My brother (son) . So how many years do we have to wait to apply for citizenship (we all are above 18)? I am asking this because of i am confused with the term "three to five years".

Q2. For how many years the Green Card will be? I've heard it for 10 years is it true?

Q3. What is meant by Adjustment Of Status?

The definition here says "Adjustment of Status (AOS) is the process by which a non US Citizen petitions the USCIS to become a Permanent Resident of the United States" but isn't getting Green Card a determination of being an LPR, do we still need to go for AOS?

  13. Dont worry things will be fine, just have faith and think good and then good will happen :)

I am sorry to ask a question in your topic but after reading some posts I am a little scared.

If a person fails in citizenship, can't he apply again for citizenship?

If a person fails in citizenship, you cannot stay anymore in USA??
