  1. Hi there!

I moved back home to Canada and got my last W2 after living in the US for 4 years. I am not returning.

I just want to make sure I'm doing everything right before I submit my return. Do I need to notify the US in anyway that I will no longer be living in the US and this will be the last w2 I get?

Also I'm not exactly sure how to surrender my status as a green card holder? I asked when we came back over the border but they had no clue/don't accept green card surrenders at the border and if I need to do this prior to doing my taxes as I don't want to have to pay taxes in both countries as I hear the US will tax foreign income.

    Any help is appreciated.

I have no other income, it's just a w2, so I don't need information about homes or other investments as I had none.

    Thanks!

Green card is for living and working in the US as a US resident.  If you think you may want to move back in 2 years you could file for a re-entry permit.  Or you could wait out citizenship. However if you have no intentions of living in the USA at this point the. The I-407 to relinquish your GC is the route you need to take.

Hmm, thats odd cause I did read I could basically make it commuter status until it expires. Is that not true? But thank you for the name of the form. I'm not exactly sure what will be done yet. We're still a good 6 months out before we move back. The reason why I wish to keep it, is that I'm moving to a small rural area. I wanted to be able to keep my door open to work across the border if worse came to worse. I've been looking into it and read about filling out another form, or informing the USCIS about my address change and asking about changing the GC to Commuter Status.

  3. For numerous reasons after completing this journey in 2015 , we're moving back to Canada in fall of 2019.

I still have 6 years on my green-card. Will it still remain valid or do I need to revoke it? I only ask as I'll be living no more than an hour from the border, and just was curious if I could technically still work in the US if I needed too? What would you recommend I do? (If an option to revoke is there?)

  4. I know, about a year later (I just got my license switched over) and guess what? They gave me a full under a g2 and even honored my expired card as it was only a day....

Not sure if I was extremely lucky or if rules have changes since the only restriction on a g2 is drinking...so yeah....yay haha!

  5. The question is what receipt number do I use to check the status of my greencard production (ON THE NEW SITE, not the one before hand as I paid AFTER August 31, 2015). I just need to know. I've been using the ONLY number that will work and that's my LIN number but it's not getting me anywhere.

I arrived on the 7th of October, it's coming up on 45 days (Which is apparently how long it's suppose to take) but cannot seem to be able to track the card at all or it's status. YES, I have paid the $165 dollar fee.

Just really concerned as my VISA is only good for 1 year until I get that card (Then it's good for 10) and so far all the jobs I've applied for have refused me because they need a certain number that is not on the VISA but only on the green card and I really need to get back to work as we're just barely making it by on one income and apparently this is harder to do without the greencard itself (Despite the VISA being valid for working but I guess some jobs require a certain number that is not included on the VISA, idk and it's not the SSN as I already have that. Got it 10 days after being in the US)

So if someone can just give me the straight up answer, that would be great, so I know what to tell USCIS when I call if I can't figure this out by the 22nd....

Not trying to sound rude, I just really need an answer...

*****Also where do I find this receipt number I'm suppose to use or how do I obtain one?

  6. I keep trying to go to the ELIS website and I can't seem to get anywhere. It asks for my LIN number and I put it in and it just tells me my case is being looked at (As if I just started to process).

Can someone please give me step by step instructions how to track my greencard? I've been in the US since the 07th of this month and got my SSN just a few days ago.....

Please help! We're really hurting funds wise, so I really want a better idea when I can start applying for jobs :(

  7. You should receive your SS card before your green card. My wife receive hers in about 10 days. Some have taken longer. If you have not receive it in a recent amount of time you can go to the local SS office.

You can track your green card on the ELiS site when it is issue it will give you tracking number that you can use to track delivery from the USPS. It took about 5 weeks for my wife GC to arrive

You should not have to call any number

    Congratalations welcome to the USA

I'm sorry what website is that? Can you link it to me?

  8. Sorry if this is a FAQ question, but I'm having a hard time finding where I can track my greencard? (Like a shipment number) Will I be notified via email once it's been sent out?

Also how long does it roughly take to get both my greencard and SSN number?

Also what do I have to do in able to get them to issue me a SSN? I remember marking off I wanted one on my DS260 but that's it. Is there a number I call, does it come with my greencard?

Thanks so much! Eager to get working, that's all as we really need me making money too. Living on one income is difficult.

I just entered the US on the 7th if that helps at all.

  9. I didn't but my mom did.

Oh okay :( That really sucks...had this thing for 10 years and here I thought I was being responsible only for it to give me more hassle.

The test though, it's basically just the G1 Driving test all over again right? That's what I keep hearing and they won't make me do my learners again will they?

  10. I didn't realize you couldn't just keep a G2...and my understanding at the time was the only restriction was the drinking thing (I had got it when they got rid of the curfew) again because I don't drink so I saw no hurry or need lol. Then when I renewed it they told me this is the last time I can do that :S At least it's valid for another 10 months should something delay me.

I keep looking this up and I'm getting mixed messages, some say Florida doesn't give a damn and others say they do...I guess maybe it depends who you get? Haha, I don't know :P

Haha really? Funny I drove to the Belmont Stakes back in 2014. Glad I wasn't pulled over for anything!

  11. You need G before u can completely transfers without any test .

Seriously? I've been on a g2 for 10 years and they're gonna make me take the test again? That's so silly....but is that just what they did in New York (seeing your profile there). Don't rules differ state to state? I think NY Is one of the stricter ones for driving laws isn't it?

Either way, I'm expecting to have to take a test again but was hoping maybe not....again it's just ridiculous as they don't do "Highway" tests in the US (Not in Florida anyways) so I see no reason why I have to be bumped back to learners/take any test again.

Thanks for your insight though, I'll go in expecting them to tell me to take the written and driving test AGAIN, but hope maybe I won't have too.

  12. Any fellow K1 or IR/CR1 visa holders from Ontario can help me out here?

I'm reading on the Florida DMV site that I have the option to surrender my Canadian drivers license in able to get my Florida one and do not have to take the drivers test, written test etc.

My question is in Ontario we have 3 steps to get your full, I only have a G2 with the only restriction (That I know of) is that I cannot have any alcohol at all in my system. Florida only has two steps so would they just consider that equal to their full? (it pretty much is minus the blood alcohol level as they don't do "highway" tests in the states and according to my wife I've taken the equivalent of their driving test needed to get a full plus some)

I just want to know what to expect. I have no time/money anymore to take my G test here so I just want to know roughly if I have no choice but to do the test in Florida even if I tell them I want to surrender the Canadian licence because in Ontario at least, I'm still considered to be a non-fully licensed driver (despite only having one restriction which is logical).

Also does it cost money to get it changed or is it free within the first 30 days? And all I need is a valid VISA right to get it? (Not a green card as that probably won't come in 30 days)

  13. Everyone watches porn, I watch porn, you watch porn, the IO probably also watches porn....as long as it's legal porn you're fine...

I watch Hentai *shrug* Never had it brought up....if that what we mean by Japanese Porn...lol. Last time I checked, Hentai isn't illegal and can be purchased at basically any video section of a sex store in the US :P

Seriously unless you're like in the black market or doing stuff ILLEGALLY online, they don't search anything probably outside of Facebook if that unless you give them a reason too.

    This post made my day.

  14. Seriously don't know why everyone says "Certified copy". Xerox is fine.

A photocopy will do, that's what I and countless others have done, no issues, make sure it's a color copy so it's easier to read is my personal advice. They will request the actual certificate at the interview only. (The USCIS/NVC will tell you otherwise if they fell they REALLY need a certified copy but never had or heard of this being an issue).

Send in copies of everything UNLESS stated otherwise. Originals are only needed at the interview.

  15. That's an amazing deal! But personally, I'd wait.

Spirit usually has just as amazing of deals last second, same with American and Delta. Look at all your POE options too, shuttle buses to different airports for cheaper flight costs. Not sure in terms of options in CR but you're in a pretty nicely central hub, so if you're okay with driving two hours in any direction, that will open up more hubs for you which may be cheaper!

But that's my opinion. If you're confident with Southwest's policy then do what you think is best for you :)

I got my flight on the 7th with Delta for 164 from Toronto to Tampa :)

    Not to shabby!

  16. You can stay the full 6 months. You were granted the B2 before you started the process and even if you were doing the process it's up the the BCO at the time whether or not they will stamp you B2 so to answer you last question, it all depends on the BCO regardless of evidence. I got stamped B2 every-time I visited the states from Canada. If you have a B2 Visa now you can stay the full 6 months :)

I was on a B2 visa prior to my inteview with plans to stay a full 6 months until we got the email. Again the BCO officer at the time didn't see a reason not to stamp me B2 as I had enough money to support myself for the said 6 months and I had a valid address and reason to return to Canada after those 6 months, but again each BCO is different.

If you got a yes, then you can stay is basically what I'm saying. You can return home after and still work on your CR1/IR1 application.

I hope I understood that all correctly! If not I apologize!

  17. I'm a little confused, are you divorced or just separated as in living apart due to family or whatever other reason?

I'm afraid if there as been no attempt at visiting each other in the last 2 years, this is going to be very hard to do, however you may be able to get just your son over into the states, but I'm not sure if that would entitled her having to give you full custody etc and if it would also be hard if you haven't seen him in 2 years also.

If this is the case, I'd wait two more years and in that time, visit your wife and son and have them come visit you cause I'm also certain in your sons case, you will at least need to prove you have a relationship with him as his father.

Either way I wish you the best of luck. Sounds like a sticky situation but I can understand your need for your son to come to America.

  18. You may want to get a co-sponsor....not to freak you out but in Montreal at least, they've been denying VISA's even if you're a slightly over (by like $1000 or $2000).

My personal opinion and advice would be to seek a co-sponsor since you're so close to that line either way. That's what we did cause we feared even if my wife was just over, they would deny us....

Better to be safe than sorry :)

But that's up to you. You could also try to pair assets (home, savings, investments) to try and meet up with the guidelines as well, but I'm not 100% how that is done. Co-sponsor is usually the easiest way to go about things.

Again this is MY personal opinion, others may have better insight.

  19. Just bring a lot of evidence to prove the relationship is bonefide....so wedding photos, honeymoon photos, photos with your child, photos with parents, photos with friends, photos from past trips, ticket stubs, flight confirmations, hotel confirmations, cards, gift reciepts, everything and anything you can think of.

Chances are they won't even ask to see any of this, but just in case, have it ready :)
