  1. Licence requirements are pretty similar nationwide, main one is having an SSN , and evidence of legal residency for your particular state, here in California you can drive on a UK licence for i think 90 days , after this you must apply for a CA licence if you wish to drive legally, this being so you must have an SSN or legal presence documentation. Also bear in mind that once you become a permanent resident in the USA, your UK licence becomes invalid as you are no longer resident in the UK and are required to send your licence to DVLC, read the small print on the paper part of your UK licence or visit the DVLC website for more info. Make enquiries regarding car insurance in Colorado that may be fun and possibly a wee bit expensive,lol....

best of luck in your venture to drive on the wrong side of the road...

  3. Also remember that the medical has to be carried out by a Designated Civil Surgeon as recognised by USCIS. Go to the USCIS website where you will find a link to a list of Civil Surgeons nearest to your home. She may also need additional vaccinations as required for residence, (look into this also). Congratulations on your wedding and good luck......

ps, bet theres no chance of you forgetting your wedding anniversaries..lol.

  4. Has anyone sent off to there respective Police station in the UK for a record or copy of there background check/criminal history , and if so , what form of payment did they accept from the US. According to my own force in Scotland , cheques or money orders are the required method of payment , thats fine if your in the UK but what if your already here. As far as i have found out the UK does not accept international money orders and my wifes (usc) bank account is a small local bank and not a major banking institution. I have sent an email to the local HQ in Scotland and asked if they would accept a Travellers cheque to the value of the fee.......stilll awaiting a reply from them , so any input from you guys would be a help , thanks

  5. Visit a DMV office (make an appointment for faster service)

Complete application form DL 44 (An original DL 44 form must be submitted. Copies will not be accepted.)

    Give a thumb print

    Have your picture taken

Provide your social security number. It will be verified with the Social Security Administration while you are in the office.

Verify your birth date and legal presence

    Provide your true full name

    Pay the application fee

    Pass a vision exam

Pass a traffic laws and sign test. There are 36 questions on the test. You have three chances to pass.(Samp

Note: To allow you sufficient time for testing DMV will not be administering written or audio exams after 4:30 p.m.

You will then be issued a permit if you have never been licensed before. When you practice, you must have an accompanying adult who is 18 years of age or older, with a valid California license. This person must be close enough to you to take control of the vehicle if necessary. It is illegal for you to drive alone.

If you have a license from another country, you will be required to take a driving test. If you have a license from another state, the driving test can be waived.

To take your driving test, you will need to:

Call a DMV office to set up an appointment. (Driving tests are not given without an appointment. Call 1-800-777-0133 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday - Friday, to make a driving test appointment.)

    Provide proof of financial responsibility

The above is the requirements for obtaining a license in California.

The proof of financial responsibility is needed when you are actually going to sit the vehicle part of the test , where you have to take a car and qualified driver with you that is properly insured and the vehicle is mechanically sound to comply with California vehicle codes

  6. From what i have read from the UK , DVLA in Swansea , if you become a resident of another country you have to return your UK licence to Swansea as you are no longer classed as a resident , therefore you do not have a permanent residence in the UK, see from part 2 of your counterpart UK licence item #5

Changes to name, permanent address and health.

You must tell DVLA at once of any change to your permanent address, using the section provided overleaf

. You need only notify a change of address in GB. An address outside GB cannot be entered on your licence

  7. I have to disagree with ..Anutka, on the lack of a marriage certificate copy..... "quoted as follows" =

    Assembling the I-485 Package: Checklist

    #1 Payment

    #2 Cover Letter

    #3 Form I-485

#4 Copy of non Us Passport

#5 Copy of valid non US I94

#6 Copy of non US birth certificate

#7 Certified copy of Marriage Certificate (If filing for your spouse)

#8 Copy of non US divorce documents (if any)

    etc etc..

  8. Theres no such thing as a silly question , only silly answera, lol.

Anyways i would suggest for convenience just go to the nearest DMV to where you live. Depending how busy they are , we had a DMV office in our town and the powers that be decided it was not viable to continue running it so they closed it down , now we have to travel a mere 20 miles to the nearest one , distance wise its nothing for here , but its just the hassle of trying to park etc.

Go to the DMV website and look for the nearest one to your state and zipcode , and good luck

  9. I dont think that DVLA will issue you with an amended licence as you are no longer a resident of the UK.

And you no longer have a physical UK address

From their website as follows =

    Visitors

You may drive vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes and with up to 8 passenger seats, provided your full licence or driving permit remains valid for up to 12 months from the date of entering the United Kingdom. However, you may only drive large vehicles which have been registered outside GB and which you have driven into the country.

This applies to visitirs from the USA. Then theres the issue with vehicle insurance, i guess thats gonna be another kettle of fish, unless you intend to hire a vehicle , and therein is another hassle , i remember trying to hire cars and vans when i lived there. lol

So i think you may just have to go for the international driving permit. Further to this heres an aticle from drivers.com on driving abroad,=

Why is the IDP so valuable? Well, local traffic police (whether it be Dnipropetrovsk or Ulan Bator) may not be able to understand the language on your normal driving license while chances are they may be familiar with at least one of the languages on the IDP. For driving in Europe, travel officials say the IDP is more necessary in some countries than others, but is advised for most. And in more than 40 countries worldwide you cannot rent a car at all unless you have an IDP.

Countries where English is the spoken language, such as the United Kingdom, Ireland, North America, Australia, and New Zealand, do not require an IDP. However, insurance companies in many other jurisdictions often require IDPs to cover drivers of vehicles driven there

I hope this helps .

  10. What in the world is a "long form" birth certificate? I thought there was just one standard birth certificate?

A long form certificate is longer than standard size . standard printer paper is 11 x 8 1/2"

Long form as in my Birth Certificate from the UK is 13 1/2 x 5 1/2 and read in long form from left to right

Whereas my divorce document is also in long form but read from top to bottom.

I am not sure about other states in the USA , as they do their own thing , kinda like driving licences are not all standard throughout the country.

But im sure other VJers will be able to enlighten us all...

  11. Sorry to say , but you just misse the GGM sketch of the .... (going for an english) I just watched the episode on BBC America a few minutes ago , absolutely hilarious.

Sunday evening 12 March midnight episode.

  12. Many thanks for the input guys , i have had more information from VJers than from the medical fraternity in the UK. When it comes to getting personal information about yourself the UK fails miserably and way behind the states . Perhaps they could take some lessons from here !!!!!!.

Armed with this new information , i will enquire at the local health centre on what vaccinations i will need

to satisfy the supplement for the medical.

So it looks like i wont be resembling a dart-board after all.lol
