Hi Pamela,
It took me 3 months from the day I sent my application until the day I took the oath (you can check my timeline for details), but it would have been a little bit more than 4 months if the folks at USCIS Charleston hadn't helped me. I did send my husband's orders with my application, but I'm not sure you absolutely *have* to, or if a letter from his commander is enough. Has anyone told you about the no-fee passport yet? That's something you need to apply for as soon as you get your certificate of naturalization. It can take 4-12 weeks to be issued, and you probably need it to travel to Germany (unless your situation is a little different from mine).
Good luck!

Forgot one...lol
6. How many "passport syle" photos are actually needed in total? Unless I was dreaming (lol), I thought I read somewhere that TEN passport syle pics are needed for teh medical? But then I read somehwere else that only two are needed for the medical, and then of course, two more for the interview?
Definitely, not 10. The doctor will tell you how many he needs, but I think it's just 2.

First of all, shellymarie, take some deep breaths. You're going to be fine.
I did my K1 in 2013, so I don't remember certain details. Besides, the process might have changed a bit since then. Anyway, here's what I know:
1) None of my Brazilian documents were translated, and that was fine.
2) One of my police reports was obtained online, and that was fine too.
3) The consulate scheduled the interview and sent me a notice -- I didn't schedule anything.
4) Hmm, I'm pretty sure I didn't pay anything online.
5) Make sure your fiancé takes his updated vaccine records to the appointment; if he needs any other vaccines, he may or may not get them on the same day, and it wouldn't be at the doctor's office.
Good luck!

well, I filed for naturalization last april 21st. Nebraska Service Center just received my application on the 29th. I still don't have the NOA. If we're already in Japan, should I just file for change of address? I'm afraid my application would still be in process by the time we leave.
As soon as your application arrives at your local processing center, you can schedule an InfoPass and explain your situation to the USCIS people, and they might be able to help you by giving you an early interview date. Make sure you take all your documents to the InfoPass (passport used to enter the US, GC, orders with your name on them, etc).

Hey guys, I have one question!
Do my passaport need to be valid for the interview or they will not ask for that? Mine expired this may!
Thanks
They asked for my passport during the interview. I took my new one and the one I had when I entered the US with the K1 visa, and that's the one they wanted to see.
-
I saw from your flag that you are brazilian as well
While you had your AOS (temporary 2 years green card) , have you traveled internationally? Was it smooth and no many questions since you had your green card /ID/ SSN with you or they still stop and question you a lot like they do to people with visa?
I just don't to make clear I am not scared of anything, I just am scared of being separated from my husband and not going back to our apartment because some people at the imigration where having a bad day lol
I just want to make sure that they are fair and obey the law that says that people traveling for less than a month with their husbands with them and no red flags can go back to their houses...
I did travel overseas once while I had my 2 year GC. I went to Southeast Asia for 21 days, and entered the US through Honolulu International, in Hawaii. My husband and I used the same line (the one for USCs and LPRs) and stayed together. The whole thing took less than 2 minutes, and the only difference in the way the two of us were treated was that I had my fingerprints taken and he didn't. I don't even remember the immigration officer asking us any questions.
Now, they have the right to ask you questions, but it doesn't mean you should be so worried about this. If you know you're not doing anything wrong, just stay calm, answer the questions, and you should be fine.
-
kb9, thanks for your correction. I haven't been to JFK since 2005 so I didn't know their immigration lines were organized differently.
Jabuticaba 1, good luck and enjoy your trip!
-
I have been through POE in LAX, SFO, MIA, IAH, ATL, and EWR. They all worked the same. If you are traveling with your USC husband you will both use the same line. Even if you are traveling alone, you will use the USC line. You are LPR. You are not a visitor, transient, or non-immigrant.
I was about to write pretty much the same thing (and I've also been to at least half a dozen international airports in the US). Don't worry, from now on you and your husband will always be on the same line.

Hi guys,
So I got US citizenship today!
Here's what happened: on May 1st I checked my status and found out my interview had been scheduled. After calling USCIS I found out the date was in the middle of June. My husband and I decided to get an InfoPass and ask if there was any way the interview could be done sooner, since we're supposed to move to Germany in the beginning of July (we're moving because of my husband's military orders). Well, to my surprise, the good people of USCIS in Charleston said that was possible, and I ended up being interviewed and taking the oath today.
Can someone please update my info? As I've explained before, I haven't figured out how to do that. I haven't received a yellow letter or the interview letter yet, but my interview and oath were done today, May 7.
Well, now I have to go fill out a passport application.
Good luck to all of you!

So you were inline for interview before you had you f-prints? What was you original f-print appointment date? Thanks.
Yes. I know it doesn't make sense, but as you know, when it comes to USCIS, a lot of things don't make sense. My original appointment date was 04/22.

Can someone please update my info?
NOA FINALLY received on 04-10.
Fingerprints done early today (04-15)
And my status has been "in line for an interview" since 04-10.
Thanks!

Well, I'm happy to hear that everything worked out for you! I can't wait to hear about the interview!
In my case I haven't requested an expedite yet, but I might have to. I haven't even received my NOA yet (and apparently it was mailed on the 24th), but the person I spoke with when I called the Military helpline a couple of days ago said she would personally print the Biometrics notice and get it mailed to me. Let's pray that it gets here this week so I can do a walk in biometrics at Ft jackson on Friday. Anyway, I think it's crazy how I'm supposed to just wait for the NOA for a month before USCIS "can do anything about it" (this is what I was told when I called the normal USCIS helpline).
-
There's no updates since I filed the request. So I did an info pass and escalated my case to someone who can actually help - section chief. I suppose to hear something next week. I'll keep this updated.
Thanks for letting us know about this. I read on the February thread that your interview was scheduled for today. Did that happen because of the InfoPass? And how was it?
-
I just called and made the request over the phone, I got a referral number for my request, it was pretty simple, but I'm still waiting for the response tho.
PFLETCHER, have you received a response yet?
-
Hey guys! Can someone please add my info? I swear I tried to figure out how to use the Rich Text Editor but I failed
USCIS Lincoln, Nebraska
Field office: Charleston, SC
GC date: 09/02/2014
Sent: 03/14
Cashed: 03/20
I still haven't received my NOA (!!), but I called the Military Helpline and got my case number. I knew I could do the FP at Ft Jackson (they have a small USCIS office there for soldiers and their dependents), so I went there this morning but was told I need to wait until I receive the FP letter in the mail. =/
-
Nope, he can go to this interview by himself. Good luck!
-
Maybe you can print the tax return form, cover the SSNs with a black marker, make a copy of them, and then take the copy to the interview? This way even if the Consulate people keep the papers they won't be able to read the SSNs? Btw this is an idea that just occurred to me (so I can't assure you that it will work), but if my husband had thought of it before my interview he would definitely have asked me to give it a try.
Good luck!
-
1) I don't know.
2) Correct. Unless you've changed names when you got married and your passport still uses your old name. In that case I'd suggest that you take a certified copy of your marriage certificate with you. And go straight to the citizen/resident line.
-
I sent B&W too, and it wasn't an issue.
-
You should apply for the GC using your married name. And yes, you can renew your passport here in the US, but you don't need to do it now unless your passport is about to expire. You can renew it by mail or you can visit a Brazilian consulate. If you want to change your name on your passport, however, you need to visit a consulate first and register your wedding, and this is something you can't do by mail.
-
I don't think your chances of being denied entry are any higher after NOA2. I did the same thing myself and had no problems whatsoever (I came here in December 2013, a month before my interview, and stayed for 3 weeks). Make sure you bring a copy of your NOA2 as well, and the letter with the interview date, if you receive it before you travel. And of course, don't lie to the immigration officers. I came here to spend Xmas and NYE with my fiancé and his family, and that's what I told the guy at the Atlanta airport (and it wasn't a big deal).
Good luck and have a nice trip!
-
Same thing happened to me here in Hawaii. I think my SSc arrived after 3 weeks.
-
The interview was scheduled for 7:20am, so I would imagine that she is either the first or one of the first people being interviewed.
They schedule a bunch of people for 7:20am, and then another group for 09:30am. People start to arrive at the consulate at 5-5:30am and then they form a line, so if you get there at 07:20am you might actually be at the end of the line and you'll have to wait a couple of hours until your interview.
-
Natálya, if you already have a tourist visa you probably won't have any problems. I came to the US once during the K1 process, when my interview had already been scheduled, and everything went okay. I was unemployed at the time, so I didn't have much proof of ties to Brazil, but I had been here several times and was confident that I wouldn't have any problems. I brought my NOA1 and NOA2, but the immigration officer didn't even ask to see them, even though I had told him I was here in the US to spend Xmas and NYE with my fiancé and his family (POE was Atlanta btw).
Good luck!
