Hi! Had my interview to day Feb 13/19 in LAS VEGAS. It took about 1 hr. Very straight forward. VERY nice guy interviewing me. I WAS APPROVED! Yeah Yippee! It's been a 7 year journey to get to this. Whew! And Visa Journey and the people on it helped me enormously from the beginning! First question after taking an oath...Do you want to change your name? (I already had) Then he asked me 6 questions which I assume I answered correctly. Then he started with the application. The longest part was at the end showing evidence. 3 years tax returns, some utility bills, 401K statement. I didn't have any bank statements but I did have a photocopy of the signature page for the account showing both of us. I did ask him "Do you ever deny anyone?" He said "All the time!" I thought that was interesting. I asked "Why?" he said "usually lying on the application". He also reminded me "If you get arrested before your Oath Ceremony you will be denied to participate" hmmm.
I'm pretty sure these were the questions asked:
1. How many amendments to the Constitution?
2. What economic system is the USA?
3. When do you have to file your taxes by?
4. Name a part or branch of the government?
5. When do we celebrate Independence Day?
6. When was the Declaration of Independence adopted?
I asked when the OATH CEREMONY would be and he said within 60 days but probably less.

It doesn't work to cut the photo's. They need to be in the right proportion inside the template. I had the same problem here in Las Vegas. I googled "International Passport Pics" I found a service that had the computer program that did the pictures of most countries. In Canada Shoppers Drug mart asks "for which county" and they set the photo requirements for that country. Costco is not correct nor CVS. Do a search for International pics in your area...there must be a photographer doing it.

So its time to do our 751!! (2 years has gone quickly)
We received a reminder from Homeland Security to file it.
Im totally confused!
QUESTION: We are older and I have adult children in their 30's who don't live with me. Three of them live in Canada and another daughter is on her own Work sponsored Visa and lives in another State. None are dependant or included in my CPR Visa.
How do I answer Part 5 Information about your children? It doesn't mention "children included in Visa"...it just asks for children. Thoughts anyone???

I had a few cards in the US before moving. (Kohls/Macys)..but they were under my SIN number. It was a huge pain changing over from SIN to SSN. And it did lower my credit score. Btw closing accounts isn't a good idea.
Why not try Home Depot, Bank of America, Discover, Barclays.

I shipped some of my stuff with a shipper. But I drove across for my POE and my SUV was FULL of household belongings. They didn't even ask me about it! They were more interested in the importing of my car. It was very easy...Detroit bridge crossing. (Car was quite a bit of paperwork)

Anyone have any experience to share getting funds to the US? I know you take $10K with you but who the heck wants to do that!!! Last time I crossed with a large amount they pulled me in a room...Asked me repeatedly how much money I had...I told them. (less than $10K)The said the amount they counted better be what I had told them.They counted every bill!!!!
It was a crazy experience as they were putting on "blue gloves" as they were talking to me!!! My eyes were bugging out of my head with fear!!!
Only thing that made me feel a little better was they had 2 nuns pulled into secondary!!

I am going with United Van Lines - they are loading my things this Friday, so I'll let you know how it all turns out.
I am moving from Saskatoon SK to Chicago IL (load size estimated at approx 2100 lb which is about 1-2 bedroom apartment size) and the cost will end up being around 3000$. They seemed pretty knowledgeable about all the immigration stuff- helped me fill out the forms needed / what I should expect at POE, etc. Here's hoping everything goes well!!

Good luck to you. Don't know who United Van line rep is here in Peterborough. I used them once across country (canada) and they were great. My minimum has been $3950..but my move is farther.

It is a confusing topic thats for sure. I called a US/Canadian Tax specialist. I was all concerned about the sale of my house in Canada..would it be taxable in the us. Apparently not as its not "Income" But for sure money I made this year in Canada will be taxable in the US if I file jointly with my husband for 2014. If I file single it would be too low to be taxable. In Canada it will not be taxable either. (odd you have to claim it in the US if you earned it in Canada before you left...but you do!)
Big problem is getting the money from the house to the US. It was a "principal residence" and even the US tax fellows have an exemption up to $250K for single and $500K for married on capital gains on sale of principal residence.
Now physically getting the money there is another story.
I have already called CRA and advised them I am leaving.
If anyone has any experience getting funds from a house sale to the US please advise. I'm leaving in 2 weeks

I CAN say I will not use North American Van Lines - Their email request form wanted my phone number, which I provided, and I've had 2 very aggressive phone calls (one of them yesterday at 7:55AM BC time!) and I was not impressed!
The most pressure I've gotten is from UPACK. Unbelievable! Mayflower was rude. I have to say Atlas was really nice and very knowledgable. I thought if I have to tell the other companies that an immigrant visa doesn't have an 1-94 I was in trouble! lol

Hi! I have been getting many quotes and it is so expensive. I am moving in 2 weeks and I am at the point of "what fits in the car comes". My quotes have been around $4000-4700 for 2500 lbs. Most of the big companies have minimums which seems to be 2000lbs. Seems to be $1.25 per pound per mile. Your favourite recliner worth little doesn't look so good any more! lol. Now I have also called UHAUL which the quote was $2600 + $1200 gas. (my move is 2850 miles) I also called and got a quote from UPACK.+ PODS, Both of those two were approx $4500-$5500 It just doesn't seem to be worth it. I am now going to contact FEDEX and UPS to see how much some boxes would be. Have one heck of a garage sale next week and then donate give away things to friends.. The paperwork does seem quite easy with the big companies. They take care of your belongings/paperwork crossing. You have to cross BEFORE your goods. Then they give your 3299 when they cross with your "unaccompanied goods". If you are a CR1 there is no 1-94.
You can could send used household goods in boxes to your spouse by mail, fedex,what ever ahead of time as long as the value is below $60 I believe without documentation.
It is a very hard decision to make and there are SO many additional fees on top of the base price.with the big companies.
There is also a company Navis Pack that will ship smaller amounts, make custom crates etc.

Good Morning when i have had to transfer money from Canada to US or the other way I took advantage of TD Banks cross border banking wire transfer it is a free service that moves the money between the two accounts. Was really easy and just took a phone call to do and the money shows up in my accounts with in 12 hours. I have seen that a few other banks also offer this service so might be worth looking into for you.
Yes I have taken advantage of the RBC cross border banking. But the bank's exchange rate is quite inferior to what the foreign exchange companies offer..With similar or no fees. I hope someone here has moved money with a foreign exchange they can recommend.

Hi I am going to be moving within the next weeks. I have sold my home. I plan to wire money thru a foreign exchange as they seem to have better rates than the bank..also better fees if any. Has anyone from Canada wired money to a US bank? I am a bit leary..I imagine the the larger companies move money from all over the world so any experience??? Many Thanks

Hmmm I don't think its a problem. I am sure they see them at security at the airports/road on a regular basis. I don't think its problem shipping them either. I would call them "adult toys". It doesn't mention them in items not to be transported across border. Long as it doesn't look like a weapon! lol
