Sometimes, when you are unable to have reliable quality communication, it can help to decide to schedule certain times and methods of communicating and other than that NOT communicate. So instead of having lots of missed opportunities and failed phone calls and conversations where your connection is poor and half your words get lost, instead of that you communicate via reliable means (maybe write long emails to each other) and schedule in advance phone calls for when you KNOW you both will be available.
Sometimes it is easier to know that it will be this exact amount of time before you next hear each others voice rather than to be perpetually hoping to speak to them within the next few hours.
