    What to do?? Removing conditions - travel

    Just as Jomo's_girl said, as long as he has his passport and NOA letter, he'll be ok.

    Actually, I just got back from Canada yesterday and forgot my letter (letter basically states that the holder has a one year extension for work and travel but does NOT say to carry with them). My greencard expired yesterday, the same day I flew back. I was a little worried that we would miss the connecting flight meaning that we would have flown back today with an expired Greencard but we just caught it. The immigration officer looked at my card, checked his watch, checked the computer and then said 'you just scraped through'. He told me to always carry my letter from now on as the card would expire at midnight. I thought the system would say I have a one year extension but I guess it is not that advanced. I honestly thought it didn't expire for a few more weeks and only thought to check once we arrived at the airport. It was all a little too close for comfort.

    Ana,

    I too am out for my Biometrics appointment, so I just went the place the day after I received my letter and they allowed me to do it right then. For your case, I would just tick the 'please reschedule appointment' box and perhaps include a letter stating when you will be returning. That way they don't reschedule for the following week and you'd still be out of the country.

    Thanks for your advice everyone. I decided to leave work early and try the walk-in route. As you said Wifey246, I wasn't even aloud to finish my excuse and the guard pushed me the paperwork to complete.... then 10 minutes later I left with success. The place was empty (I suspect this would not have been the case on a Saturday).

    Driving Test

    Hi there,

    Well this morning I finally took my driving test in Chicago. Since arriving here in 2006, I have been delaying getting my license because of the hassle of finding a car to use then driving to the suburbs to take the test. Well, I recently found out that Zipcar allows you to use their vehicles if you already have a clean UK license which I have had for 10 or so years. So last week I took the written test which takes about 4-5 minutes and then the driving test today which lasts about 10 minutes. I was expecting it to be a little challenging as I still have to think about which side of the road to drive on but it was easy (UK vs. US).

    The instructor was more interested in which models of cars Zipcar has, rather than whether I was on the right side of the road. I thought I would have to do a 3-point turn, parallel parking and maybe reversing around a corner but nothing. Just straight lines and a couple of turns.

    I have a couple of questions regarding taxes if anyone can?

    Background:

    We are filing a 1040 joint return

    1 x Citizen, 1 x Resident (Greencard)

    Both worked in 2006 in US

    I worked in the UK for 2 months at the beginning of 2006

    1) Should I be filing a 2555EZ? The amount earned would be less than $82,400, but it says the amount of foreign earned income must be added to line 7. Is this correct?

    2) Can I claim for interest on my UK student loan? Does it have to be taken out for attendance to a US university only?

    AOS Application and Marriage Certificate

    Congratulations on setting the date. From what I know, there is no set period for filing your AOS. Yes you should get married within 90 days but when you file after that is up to you. If you get your package ready, you could file the day you receive your marriage licence.

    I don't know why it takes 2-3 weeks to get your marriage cert., it takes 2 days in Chicago.
