  1. You should submit the application not later than 4 or 5 months before filing the N-400 to avoid rescheduling. The by far best source for this is the Yahoo group "ZweiPaesse."

You also have 2 years once you're issued the BBG to get US citizenship, so personally I'd recommend waiting to file for the N-400 until you receive the BBG - otherwise you could risk loosing your german citizenship! The N-400 process only took 3.5 months for me, so there's plenty of time within those 2 years.

  2. No, thankfully they didn't charge for the second submission. As a courtesy the consulate checks your application before sending it on to the Bundesverwaltungsamt (at least they did for me). If they deem your case to be too weak they'll return it to you so that you can strengthen your arguments and re-submit it. Once the consulate sends it on to the Bundesverwaltungsamt (with their recommendation) is when it counts. You actually don't pay the fee until your application is approved (or I guess denied). So I had to submit proof of payment to pick up the certificate.

  3. I just sent you a PM about my process (or rather to your wife in german, so she'll have to read it), but I wanted to add that it took approx. 6 months for me to get the Beibehaltungsgenehmigung.

    My timeline:

November 25, 2008: Beibehaltungsgenehmigung (BBG) to Atlanta Consulate

    December 1, 2008: Pre-denial by Atlanta Consulate

March 9, 2009: Lawyer submits BBG to Atlanta Consulate

September 4, 2009: Bundesverwaltungsamt approval of BBG

September 30, 2009: Pick up BBG from Atlanta Consulate

  4. My naturalization interview appointment was scheduled for 10:05am on Tuesday, February 9. Hubby and I arrived at around 9:35am and then took about 10 minutes to get through the security line and check-in on the second floor, leaving about 20 minutes until interview time. Unfortunately they were running behind and I was not called in until 11:05am or so. (Significant others stay in the waiting room.) The lady took me back to her office where she told me to sit down. The next 5 minutes were an awkward silence while she sorted through paperwork. She then asked me to stand, raise my right hand, and I had to swear that I would state the truth, and then sat back down. I can’t remember the precise order of events throughout the interview so don’t quote me on this exact order, but she asked me about some personal information, such as saying my full name, birth date, address, phone number, social security number, etc. She printed out a piece of paper to verify that this information all looked correct. She also asked if I was married to a citizen and what I do for a living. I was asked the questions that were also asked on the N-400 form – were you ever arrested, are you in the process of being deported, are you a member of the communist party, do you understand the Oath, are you willing to fight for the country, etc. She didn’t ask me for any supporting documentation that I was asked to bring in a “Interview Document Check List” letter I had received. (So much for all that wasted photocopied paper, but better safe than sorry!) She then informed me the civics test would start. Unfortunately I can only recall four of the questions I was asked:

    1) What does the President’s Cabinet do?

    2) How many justices are on the Supreme Court?

    3) If both the President and the Vice President can no longer serve, who becomes President?

    4) Name one branch or part of the government.

She had me read one sentence to do with Columbus Day (can’t precisely remember what) and then I had to write the sentence “Columbus Day is in October.” I was then asked if I would like to take the Oath the same day. I told her I would love to. She then gave me a letter I had to sign and handed me another letter to say I had passed the exam. She informed me the paperwork would need to be handed over to someone to verify that everything looked in order, and if it did my name would be called to tell me I was good to attend the Oath ceremony.

I was back out in the waiting room by 11:25, so I would estimate the interview took about 15 minutes. My name was finally called at 1:10pm and I was handed the paper that told me to come back at 2:00pm for the Oath ceremony.

Hubby and I quickly drove to the adjacent Northlake Mall to grab some Chinese food and silence our growling stomachs. Then we hurried back. The security line behind us was growing very quickly because obviously many people came for the same 2:00pm Oath Ceremony. I was asked to sit out in front of the Oath room along with my fellow citizens-to-be. Hubby was asked to sit further back, and in some cases people were told to go up to the third floor because the waiting room was getting too crowded. They checked us in by the row, and it wasn’t until close to 3:00pm that all 187 immigrants were sitting in the room ready to take their Oath. At that point family was told to come in. A woman (head of the Atlanta office?) gave a speech and also informed family members they could photograph the ceremony. She then called out every country represented and you were supposed to stand up when your country was called. When everyone was standing we had to repeat the Oath after her (a booklet on your seat has a copy of it) and then we were citizens!! We were shown a video of President Obama welcoming us as new citizens and then a music video of “Proud to be an American”. Then family members were asked to go wait outside, and the woman told us the info packet on our seats included information about next steps like passport, updating social security cards, and registering to vote. We were then called in rows and handed our Naturalization Certificates as we exited!

  5. Updating status because I became a citizen today!! (Will post experience in a seperate post.)

  6. Congratulations!!

Did they call you pretty much at the time your interview was scheduled for? How long did the interview process last?

I assume you came with your spouse. Were you allowed to go with her during the interview process? Or were you asked to wait outside?

Sorry for all the questions - I have my interview coming up in Atlanta in a couple of weeks!

  7. Atlanta will do same day oath ceremonies if you are not changing a name and your interview is held in the morning. Generally if your interview is after 11 oclock there is not enough time to process the paperwork in time for the oath ceremony. Some of the busy USCIS offices have fairly regular oath ceremonies so if you interview at one of them and have your interview in the morning you could be invited to attend an oath ceremony later that afternoon. Atlanta appears to be one of those.

Thanks for the info! My interview is at 10:05am, so I guess there might be a chance. Only one way to find out! :)

  8. Hey Together,

I'm a little late in this post, but I have my naturalization interview coming up shortly and noticed you were recently approved for yours. I saw you had your oath ceremony on the same day as the interview. I don't know if you know the answer to this or not, but is this common? Are oath ceremony's performed daily? Or did you just get lucky that the oath ceremony happened to be on the same day as your interview? Did you anticipate this would happen? I imagine you were surprised to do this all in one day, but I figured I should ask anyway!

And of course congratulations on becoming a citizen!! :)

  10. @Steffi:

Also deine Gruende sind durchs Militaer.

    Danke! :)

  12. Hello all...it's been a while since I've been to Visa Journey. I have to admit it's been quite nice to have a long break from all the immigration-related discussions and worries! ;) But it's time for me to get back in the game - citizenship time!

I'm specifically hoping to get advice from Germans that have gone through the German Beibehaltungsgenehmigung process to keep their German citizenship while acquiring the American citizenship. I received my green card (through marriage) in November 2005, which would now put me at the 3 years minus 3 months period of being able to apply for U.S. citizenship. I'm aware that I need to go through the Beibehaltungsgenehmigung before getting into the N-400 application stuff. The instructions for the Beibehaltungsgenehmigung seem to be quite straight forward, but I would like to hear from people that have actually gone through the process. How much documentation did you submit? What did you state as your reasons for acquiring the American citizenship? And what reasons to keep the German citizenship? Any and all information would be appreciated!

I'm feeling quite confident due to my strong ties back to my family in Germany, as well as a bank account, etc that I have sufficient proof that I want to remain a German. I have a few things to list for reasons why it's important for me to gain American citizenship, but I was hoping to find out what other Germans that received the Beibehaltungsgenehmigung put as their reasons for needing both so I can make sure my argument is strong enough to also receive it. If people don't feel comfortable discussing this in a public forum please feel free to PM me! Like I said, I'd really appreciate any and all help because I want to make sure that my arguments are as valid and strong as I hope and think they are!

  13. So either you guys are lucky or they're figuring out a faster process to fix these. Congrats to you guys! :)

  14. Does anyone know this: in my case where I never received the GC, can I go back to the Indy ASC and get a stamp in my passport? When we were there for the interview in March, the officer said, "Well, I could stamp your pp but if you won't be travelling in the next couple weeks [no] then you might as well wait for the card to arrive."

You can definitely try to. They may or may not ask you for a filed I-90. But I guess it's worth a try if you're up for it.

  15. Thanks again guys. :D

We will just have to go through Lifting Conditions & Citizenship together... we were approved in the same week...

We'll definitely do the citizenship thing together! Since I had been married for over 2 years when my AOS was approved I already have my 10-year card and won't have to lift conditions, but best of luck to you on that!

  16. I would just like to announce a big #### YEAH for being informed by my husband that the CORRECT Green Card arrived in the mail just now!!

With a bad, squished photo of me, but ME nontheless!! Woohooo!! 265 days since sending off for the replacement. Never thought it would take this long but I'm glad to have it now. Shoot, I almost thought I was going to have citizenship before the GC!
