  1. Helping a friend fill out her i-90 thru ELIS. I have explained her failure to comply with her responsibilities as a resident alien and the potential consequences, Now the problems: she married 8 years ago(didn't report name change), she move out from her mother's house(didn't report address change), and her resident card expires in 5 months.

What should she choose as reason for filing? I am leaning towards "my existing card expired or will expire within 6 months" instead of "my name or other biographic information has been legally changed..." then updating and submitting evidence for name and address change. hope and prey for best outcome.

Anyone have any insights, suggestions, or advice?

  2. ok, i got an answer from uscis. in case this will help others, rep said the procedure is to select either(2c or 2f) he said he would select renewal (but didn't matter). When you go get pics and fingerprints the extension document/sticker will be affixed to current valid Mexican passport instead of to the mutilated resident/green card. so all one would need is a valid passport.

  3. hello,

this is for a friend. Her green card(permanent resident card) expires in March 11, 2015(about 6 months from now). Past weekend was going to visit in Mexico, but was worried because her card went thru the drier cycle and was mutilated. She stopped at border and asked if it was still acceptable. Was told not to go across or she would face a $500 fine upon re-entry(I've never heard of this before) and she should replace it before leaving the country. So when she fills out her online form I-90 which reason should she select: 2.c. her card was mutilated or 2.f.her card expires within 6 months(it will, if she waits a few days to renew). I am leaning towards renew, but when card is renewed a sticker gets affixed to green card that extends expiration date for a few months, if her current card is mutilated I assume it will not be valid. If she replaces it, will she then have to renew again(paying another $450)? any insights, suggestions, or ideas are appreciated.

  4. Thank you for taking the time to answer. I was leaning in that direction because as y'all(TEXAN) pointed out USCIS' website refers to k-1 as non-immigrant visa. I hope to be able to help other as I become confident enough to share what I learn. Currently brushing up on i-134 and i-864 procedures with a co/joint sponsor.

  5. Thank you Jay Kay. You are right. From what I recall, I read that info about a year ago when I first looked into the visa process and I must have confused it with the Visa delivery. Also explains why I couldn't find the info. It was the USCIS' "packetk1may.pdf" that made it seem like they would mail an actual packet. Since Mexico has a reliably unreliable mail system, I was concerned. Your link was helpful.
