hey guys, a quick question - does the status online change once you are scheduled for an interview and the notice is sent? i've been in line to be scheduled for the interview since early november and have not heard anything so far. thanks!

Based on the date stamps on my papers, I presume "In line for interview scheduling" means NBC has completed their preliminary process. Then they send the files to local DO for adjudication based on PDs. (Perhaps you are in that time slot)

When the local DO schedules the interview within their busy schedule, and sends you the letter the message changes to "Scheduled for interview" . Some DOs are lazy in updating the web site and you may not see any updates at all even after receing the IL.

It is a well known fact USCIS websites are never updated regularly.

You can see my timeline below. (Please, remember my DO is never busy compared to mainland and things move pretty fast. I could not attend my interview on the scheduled date as I was on a vacation trip. I had an INFOPASS and requested for rescheduling. The day after I returned from my trip, there was a call from local DO asking me if I would be available for Interview 5 days later. I accepted and completed it successfully. I am having my Oath ceremony today which turns out to be the 100th day in this whole process!!!

To day is one of the coldest days here in town... Temp around 10 degrees below Zero. The icy roads were very slicky.

I reached the USCIS DO 10 mins before the scheduled time of interview. I was allowed to carry my mobile phone with me inside the building but was advised to keep it totally switched off by the security. I waited for about 15 mins in the lobby and was greeted by the IO who led me to her office. After exchange of some pleasantries, I was told the whole proceedings would be videotaped under oath. She took my Passport, State issued DL and the GC.

She went through my application line by line and asked me questions ... Name, SSN, DOB, Country of Birth, marital status, my Home address, day time telephone number, how long I am in the present address, my present and previous employers, total number of trips and the number of days outside US (I had 198 days in 10trips incl two cruises), my wife's name, the date of marriage, her DOB, her status in US, names of my children and their current addresses. She specifically asked me if I had made any single trip involving 180 days are more during the last 5 years. She verified some Port of Entry stamps in my passport. Then she asked me all the questions verbatum from the application for which all my answers were "NO". The answers were "YES" for the questions on "Oath requirements". Then she made me sign the two photographs, which were with the application

For the Reading and Writing Test, she made me read "Where is the White House?" and asked me to write "The White House is in Washington DC"

Then followed the Civics test:

1. What is the Highest Court in US? (The supreme Court)

2. Who is your Vice President? (Mr. Joe Biden)

3. How many amendments does the Constitution have? (27)

4. Who makes Federal Laws? (The Congress)

5.Why did the colonists fight the British? (Because of high taxes)

6. Who was the President during the Great Depression and World war II? (FDR - Franklin Delano Roosevelt)

She congratulated me and gave me a letter stating that I have passed the tests of English and US history and Govt and my application has been recommended for approval.

She also gave me the Oath letter and told me that the ceremony would be on coming Friday 21st Dec 2012. [Which happens to be the Winter Solstice day ... the shortest day (2 Hrs) and longest night (22Hrs) in Alaska] She returned back my Passport, DL and GC. She advised me to bring the GC and return it to USCIS staff during the ceremony, while collecting the Certificate of Naturalization.

The whole proceedings took exactly 10 minutes as announced by her, during the video recording.

Normally USCIS will schedule you for the interview after the anniversary date, so that when you take the oath (presuming same day oath), you have legally satisfied the "Presence" requirement.

However, if you are interviewed before the anniversary date (Which is still possible), you will have your oath only after the anniversary date.. that's for sure.

Can you require to be scheduled for interview before u reach anniversary date?

Sure you can .... After you get your Naturalization certificate.

Our daughter who is a US citizen sponsered us in the last week of Jul/2007 and we got our Green cards in the first week of Dec/2007.

I happened to log into my USCIS account and saw the LUD today "Interview scheduled"

There was no E mail or text messages.

I expect to have my interview around Christmas time.

How long do you guys think I have to wait until being scheduled?

I was put in line on November 12 after waiting 41 days already from my fringerprint appointment on october 2.

My 5 year date is december 11.

Please be informed that you will be scheduled for your oath ceremony only after your GC anniversary day, even if you happen to have your interview before that date.

So relax, you will be fine....

To day I received the YL dt 7th Nov from NBC advising me to bring a state issued DL / ID at the time of interview when scheduled.

FInally, I am now a US Citizen!

Yes. Your parents can get their GC in 6 months. They need not wait for their priority date once approved.

(Our daughter sponsered us in Jul 2007 and we got our GC in the first week of Dec 2007.)

Scheduled for an interview as of Nov 8, 2012!!!! Just waiting for the letter! So Happy, I hope it is sometime before the 15th so I will have enough time go get my passport in one day and take my trip on the 22nd )))) Good luck to everyone!!!!!

Subject to postal delay you should expect to receive IL in four days. Presuming that USCIS gives you one month gap, you can expect to get your interview scheduled by 15th Dec.

Do you think you will get your oath ceremony the same day and apply and get your passport in time? If your live in an area where they have the office to issue the passport in one day, be sure to make an appointment in time.

Hi Coho, thanks. That's so strange do you think we will be scheduled for December or January? My processing time says 5 months. I either need to be scheduled before the 20th of December or after the 7th of January, since I have to leave the country. I really do not want to reschedule if I get between the 20th and 7th...grrrrr...people on the phone recommended to make a Infopass appointmet and tell the officer of my situation and see if I can get an appointment after the 7th. Not sure if that can be done though :unsure:

In my opinion, It is not advisable to make an infopass, before you are actually scheduled for the interview. USCIS normally sends IL, one month before the interview. So you will have ample time before your departure to request for rescheduling in case your interview is scheduled during your vacation. I expect your interview just around your anniversary day. I too will be gone during third week of Nov till Mid Dec. Hopefully I get my interview after Mid Dec. In case the interview is scheduled during this time, I shall request for rescheduling at my local DO. But remember we deal with USCIS, it is very difficult to forecast the time line. Good luck.

By the by, did you notice, though your PD is 5 days earlier than mine, I got the message "In line for interview scheduling" yesterday the 6th Nov 12 and my GC anniversary is 6th Dec 12.

Your GC anniversary is on 7th Dec 12 and got this UD on 7th Nov 12.

Thanks but I know this already.. Im waiting to get in line or get interview letter.. but I want to know if people have got an interview before their date or if I have to wait for after?

What I have learnt from the forum, the interviews are normally held at the DOs after the GC anniversary dates; some DOs issue the oath letter right away after a successful interview.

In case interviews are scheduled before the anniversary date, you will be in line again for the oath ceremony.

This morning I received a text message on my mobile phone that "Your case NBC*?????????) is now updated. Check your status on the USCIS web site..." I logged into my account and found that I am placed in line for interview scheduling. I did not receive any E mail notification, although I signed up for both Text messaging and E mail notification. (My 5 year GC anniversary is 6th Dec and I get this LUD today .. 6th Nov).

Coloso - I don't understand what you mean? What do I need a service request for? Application isn't outside of processing time yet. There are others before me still waiting...so there's nothing unique about my case - except the looming expiration of the GC - which they dealt with for me.

2. In Part 6 , Info abt yr residence : Do I have to put the India address when she went to India on vacation twice for 5 months or I just put her local Florida address for past yrs from 01/15/2008 ..

Question one: Part 2. You will select "A" (Legal PR for at least 5years) You are aware that although you file your application 90 days (NOT 3 months) prior to your eligible date duly signed in part 11, USCIS will complete processing your application (the final oath ceremony) only after satisfying the 5 year requirement. During the final successful interview you will once again sign the application in front of the IO in part 13.

Question two. Do NOT mention your foreign address. The very idea of you filing N-400 application is that you are a legal PR and you intend to continue your resident status as US citizen. Make sure, you satisfy all the residency requirements. Refer the brochure issued by USCIS on "Instructions for filing N-400" applications" in detail while preparing your application.

I sent to Dallas Lockbox too. My receipt number starts with NBC* That's the National Benefits Center in Lee's Summit, MO. I guess it gets forwarded there from Dallas. I don't have my papers here with me, I don't remember where the initial NOA or FP letter came from. The yellow letter definitely came from NBC in Missouri, and that's where the agent told me my file still is - or at least was, until yesterday. He said that the NBC office sets the appointments and mails the IL, then they send the file to the DO.

I had sent my papers to Phoenix Lock Box (Since Alaska comes under their jurisdiction for filing N-400 applications) on 13th Sep. It was received by them on 17th Sep which became my PD.

The NOA (with NBC*) and FP letters both dated 20th Sep came in two different envelopes from Missouri with two different Zip codes on 26th Sep.

I guess USCIS distributes the initial Receipts and Documentation work to the Dallas/Texas/Phoenix/NSC service centers, who update the records electronically to NBC.

NBC does the initial processing, assigning PDs, issuing FP letters/yellow letters, gets the FP/background check reports from FBI and does any additional processing if required and finally puts us on the long interview line and transfers the files to local DO for final adjudication.

Obviously applicants from military and applicants married to US citizens get priority for adjudications.

For remaining applicants, the processing seems to proceed at normal pace. However some stray cases get delayed for unknown reasons. That is the time, all of us get concerns and worries.

American Samoa, while being a US territory, does has its own immigration system, it is not under the INA, and if you go there you are leaving the US for the purposes of immigration.

The contents of my message on the "Territories" is quoted verbatim from the booklet " Learn about the US - Quick Civics lessons for the Naturalization Test "

issued by USCIS. I picked up the book when I went for my FP. The book has civics questions and answers with detailed explanation and has an audio CD insert too.

He confirmed that my file is still at NBC. NBC schedules the interviews and sends the letters and THEN they forward the files to the DO. So my file is still in Missouri, until such time as they schedule me.

Regarding scheduling of interview: I was under the impression that NBC releases N-400 files to various DOs after initial processing, in order of PDs.

That is the time one gets the message "In line for interview". When the DO schedules the interview, it becomes "Scheduled for interview".

(Of course "on line" messages are very unreliable in USCIS website.)

Puerto Ricao is one of the five major territories, which is a self governing piece of land under the authority of US Govt. US territories are not states, but they do have representation in Congress.

Each territory sends one delegate to the House of representative. People living in American Samoa are considered US nationals whereas those living in the remaining four territories(Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands,Guam and Northern Mariana Islands) are US Citizens. Citizens of the territories can vote in primary election for president, but they CANNOT vote in the General elections for president..

Hence one can conclude that days spent in the territories should not be considered as days of absence from US. You do not require any travel documents to visit these places when visiting from mainland.

I think I sent the N 400 application a bit early as 90 days before become 5 yrs is only on 17th oct but I signed the N400 application on 15 oct as my MIL got her GR on Jan152008 and I calculated 3 months and on 15 jan I applied via express mail and they recd on 16 oct in Levinville,TX..I did not get the NOA nor my ck was cashed and I was looking somewhere in another forum and they feel I applied early ..not sure what will happen now? any commments ir advise pls? If your application is received in USCIS, before the eligible date, they will simply send it intact back to you with a rejection note.

You do not lose any thing except the postage for resending the application.

Relax, after submission you will be waiting anywhere between 3 -5 months.

Although US citizens can visit most of the countries in the world without a visa, some do require on reciprocal basis.

Of course you may consider visiting your home country, using your old passport issued by them, keeping aside your US passport. Be aware in some countries, it is illegal to use their passport once you acquire citizenship from other countries.

For example Indians are supposed to surrender their passport on becoming US citizens and get a surrender certificate, failing which, if you use their passport illegally, there is a hefty fine.

I do not know your country of origin. Your nickname sounds like name of an Indian movie. If you are from India, apart from counting the days to get your US passport, include the days of your waiting to get Indian Visa. Better know your legal rights before leaving US for another country.
