I'd think this highly depends on how many people are taking the oath because everyone has to go through security, check-in and fill in an application and turn in the green card. Then each gets called individually, receives his citizenship package and takes a seat. There are a few videos being played but the swear-in part itself is pretty short. They might hold you longer if they have you register to vote (another form to fill in). If it wasn't for that I would have made it to the SSA building on time to change my status.

I too had the same dilemma, my case being a bit different. Traveling to Europe entering with Romanian passport (can't use US passport as I have not given up on my citizenship) and exiting with US passport (can't leave without US passport otherwise I need a visa...glad to have the US passport now). More questions come to mind when I start thinking about inter-European travel, which passport to show to create less confusion for US and EU authorities.

It can happen both ways no doubt about it. Someone I know (now naturalized German citizen) was lured into a marriage by a "lady" 20 years ago who robbed him of 3000 GBP (a great deal of money at the time), beat him, humiliated, blackmailed and threatened him with deportation. It's amazing what some people are capable of when they play the citizenship card.

I've had both state ID and permit and I can say both look almost identical at least here in Oregon they both look like a driver's license and have a picture. Neither is just a piece of paper, if it were then my post office requirement would be understandable.

Well it turned out this 'requirement' was imposed by this post office (text was printed on a piece of paper at the passport counter) so I didn't argue with her, just very annoyed by her over zealousness.

As said she asked for a photocopy of my naturalization certificate as secondary identification form which I found very stupid since I gave her all my original documents (naturalization certificate, SSN card, permit).

I was also very upset that she stapled all documents together including my original naturalization certificate :angry:

In the end I was able to apply and my documents were sent but the experience was very negative and uncharacteristic of the US system (I take she wasn't born here judging her behavior).

I wish I had acted differently and be more firm but I guess I was too shocked by her rudeness. Please don't make the same mistake and let situations like this ruin your week.

Instructions on the state.gov page call for a valid driver's license as form of identification which I don't have. For 7 years I have always used my permit to ID myself and everything and no one complained (was good enough to cross the US border at multiple checkpoints, apply for loans, get a job etc). For those not familiar, a permit is a state issued ID similar to a driver's license with the exception that you aren't allowed to drive, the rest looks identical.

When I went to apply for the US passport I was unpleasantly surprised that the post office clerk (a very dismissive lady BTW) wouldn't take it. What else was I supposed to show when my only other form of identification (my green card) was taken away when I became US citizen?

Instead she asked me to provide her a copy of my naturalization certificate as secondary ID which baffled me completely since I have just given her my naturalization certificate in original

I have always believed that driving is voluntary. In my case I don't have to since my wife and I work at the same place and we carpool together. Besides I find it a mistake to let people that lack proper training (including myself and million others who do have a license) have a license but here in the US looks like everyone drives even people that never use the turn signal, stop at stop signs or use their lights when it's dark outside :wow:

I also became a US citizen today. Had the swear-in ceremony a few hours after my interview which was a shocker . The IO was very courteous and friendly but my case was pretty straight-forward and wasn't expecting any uncomfortable questions. I was only nervous about dates I've been out of the country bc I'm really bad at memorizing numbers but the officer was very understanding. The actual testing part was easy, a lot of it I've learned in mid and high-school history classes. All other things have become second nature after living in the US for 6 years.

The ceremony lasted for two hours - I don't have a term for comparison but was touching seeing the room packed of people of all nationalities (even Britons and Canadians) joining the American family.

I wish everyone good luck and have smooth ride to the end goal of becoming a US citizen!

As GC holder here are some drawbacks: your GC can be revoked anytime (i.e.: old laws are amended, new ones creep in), you can be denied entry in the country if the customs officer feels like it or if there's a glitch in the system mistakenly taking you for someone on the wanted list.

It's important to think about these aspects if you own a property in the US or have US-born kids.

I believe saying no it's not going to matter in the event of an armed conflict on US soil. The law can be amended anytime and anyone can be conscripted and called to arms, women and child, elderly or not.

I'm just saying this seeing the rate at which our rights are being stripped away.

The affidavit of support is useless for you as it was for my mother and inlaws when they had their interview at the embassy.

They all got visas but the consular officer didn't even ask for it. All they care about is proof of good roots with your home country such as a property and a job and money to sustain yourself while you're visiting here.

IMO they give out visas pretty easily if you satisfy the conditions.

Have also applied based on 5 year residency and was not required to bring any tax returns. I got the yellow letter but all they asked for was a driver's licence and valid and expired passports. (I havent't been out of the country for six months either)

How does one answer to questions with multiple choices on the interview?

i.e.: "Why did the Colonists fight the British?" - the question has multiple answers, is one accepted in cases where the number of answers needed is not specified?

Some questions call of a specific number of answers but questions like the one above don't but can have multiple answers.

yeah I know its 5 months but the waiting time between YOU WERE PUT IN LINE FOR INTERVIEW AND THE DAY YOU ARE SCHEDULED FOR INTERVIEW is a month for most people, mine is wayyy more than that

I'm confused. Per your signature you have waited only one month since you filed your N400 and the date you were put in line so 4 months to go.

it's been more than a month now since I was place in line for interview, maybe Portland will take 2 months before they will schedule me, do I have to call or what just wait?

Chantel, the waiting time for Portland is 5 Months. Would be nice if it was sooner, I know the wait is nerve wracking, going through it myself
