Go here:https://egov.uscis.gov/casestatus/landing.do (or here, if you already have an account: https://egov.uscis.gov/casestatus/displayLogon.do)
You'll need a number, from your NOA.
is there a way to check online for status?
And if so, do we need a certain number?

See if you have a credit union, or other credit card company that does a secured-credit card. You pay $500 (example) refundable for secured credit. Then make regular small purchases and make sure you pay the card off each month.
Your credit score will then start improving. Two years into the process above, and I got a car finance package approved, as credit score was excellent.

Hi
Does anybody live in the US currently and work for a UK based company? I'm after some help/advice on filing my annual tax return with HMRC.
Thanks
Simon

Have a look at this post: http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/452245-insurance-question/#entry6489292
I did some research on the company suggested in the post and they were reasonable.

OK, I haven't earned any income - so I don't have to file. Thanks.

Hi
I came on a K1 visa in July 2013, now in the process of AOS (just got EAD approved). Do I need to file taxes for 2013?
Thanks

I use Transferwise, had no problems at all with many transactions now. Others recommend http://xe.com.

a) Go to this site: I-94 Admission Number Retrieval
b) On entry the visa will be stamped, with the expiry date on it
c) Just need the i94 and passport, with visa in it. Not sure about driver's license.
d) All I took was the i94 and passport. Don't think anything else applies to a K1.
Fill out http://www.socialsecurity.gov/online/ss-5.pdf and print.

Until your spouse can be covered under your insurance, why don't you go with a short-term insurance - that's what I did, and they did not ask for an SSN there either.
What company did you use to get your temporary cover?

Just used transferwise.com to move funds from my UK bank to my account here. There was a £2.50 charge and the exchange rate was the mid-market rate. Better than any other exchange sites I could find, and better than getting stung for £25 by my bank for a SWIFT transfer.
£500 => $771.84

Just been into the Portland branch, to get my first bank account. I needed SSN and my passport (with K1 visa).
I now have a checking and savings account, along with a secured credit card so that I can start getting some credit history.
The staff there went out of their way to help, even paying for the parking. Very happy!

In my case it was them actually preparing the visa - it stayed at Administrative Processing for about a day, then changed to Issued.

I have no idea what airline the shipping company are using.
-
If it's a K1 - then it's a fixed fee of £14.80 (that's what I paid on 15th July).
They say that it'll take about 10 working days to get your passport back, mine took nine days.

Just a warning if you're sending air-freight, like with Excess Baggage, that you cannot send any batteries of any kind - watches, cameras, laptops, torches etc. Make sure you remove them all!
I just found this out from Excess Baggage, who never told me about this to begin with. This is apparently something new since April 2013.

You can follow up to NOA2 here: http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis
After that, with an embassy case number, you can see some updates here: https://ceac.state.gov/CEACStatTracker/Status.aspx

Excellent, thank you!

I've received a letter saying I should prepare all the forms 2xDS-156, DS-156K, 2xDS-157 - yet further down the letter there's a notice to not send any documents until instructed. Do I wait until package 3 arrives (I'm assuming this letter isn't package 3), to send all these forms off, as I already have them all filled in and ready to go?
Thanks

I'm coming up to the three year rule, based on marriage, to apply for citizenship. Can I do that at any time now? I know there's a five year rule, where you don't have to supply as much supporting evidence.
