  1. I'm helping my husband fill out his forms now so that we can mail them in in January. The thing is, he's leaving soon to go abroad, and won't be back until after we want to mail this in. I don't think this is a problem in general (right?), but am not sure what to write for part 7, as he won't have a date of entry back into the US.. any ideas? Thanks!

  2. I looked through the guides and a little on the forum, but could not find an obvious answer..

My hubby's GC expires in a few weeks, and I'm going to file to remove conditions in a couple days. We waited this long because we were out of the country, and didn't want to be called to an interview while we were gone. But, it looks like we might have to leave again in at the end of March. How does this work? Do we have to file again for something like advance parole, or are we fine once we have the receipt?

    Thanks :)

  3. Hi there- I wasn't sure which forum to put this in... but this seemed the closest! Haven't been on in quite a while since our journey is pretty much over (for a few years, anyways) but thought maybe you all might have some input into our friend's situation.

One of our friends was adopted and finally moved to the US just under 4 months ago. He met the missionary family at home and they hit it off. They did a lot of work together and had a good relationship for quite a while, so our friend was excited to live with them.

Well, since his arrival, things have changed. They changed his name, won't let him out of the house- even into the yard- and force him to study, often literally, from morning until he goes to sleep, seven days a week. But they won't let him go to a regular school - they insist on homeschooling. The other day he tried to walk to his nearest neighbor's house (about 5 miles away.. ) and she drove after him and brought him back home. When company comes over, they warn him that he's not allowed to talk to them. We've sweet talked the mother, but we're the only ones he's allowed to call- and even that is shaky ground and she listens in. And the mom recently took away his documents and greencard and hid them. (he knows where they are though....)

So. He is a good guy, and he fully intended to stick with this family. I know it looks bad to leave after just a few months, but they're making him crazy. Honestly, he calls us crying. And I don't think it's healthy. I know they're not beating him up, forcing him into prostitution, or doing anything illegal, but it's mental torture.

He just turned 18, and has applied for citizenship, based on the adoption, but that hasn't followed through yet. I guess all I'm wondering is if we rescue him and get him out of there, can the mom chase him down and get him deported? My first inclination is that he's an adult, and has a green card so he should be fine... but is that true? What if he waits for his citizenship? Any ideas?

I sent this off to my old lawyer too, but I'm not sure if she's still practicing- so if anyone has any ideas they would be much appreciated! You are all so wonderful and I thank you so much for helping out with all of our personal visajourney and any other questions I've had.

  4. Thanks everyone! I will check into all those sources! I think part of the expensive ticket is that we're on the West Coast, not East, and also, I think I figured out today why so many of the flights are already full when we're planning on going- Panafest starts just days later.. good timing right!! Arrgh.. We actually wouldn't mind spending a few days layover in Europe anyway.. so that wouldn't be too bad. Anyways, I'll let you know if I strike gold- thanks everyone!!

  5. Hi all.. I know this topic has been covered, but I think it's been a while!!

My family is planning a trip to Ghana to meet my hubby's family this summer, and we're just looking into logistics right now. I'm checking out the prices on tickets, and I'm blown away! Last time I went payed around 1200, but now the cheapest tickets I see are double that!! I know gas prices have risen.. but....

It's particularly frustrating, because I know that the same tickets, physically purchased in Ghana, are about half the price! But no one's willing to wire money and go that route. However, there are going to be 9 of us, so I don't know if we would qualify for some kind of group rate either? Any one know of a good travel agent, website, or other that can get us a deal? Thanks!!!

  6.

    Receipt Number: *************

Application Type: I485, APPLICATION TO REGISTER PERMANENT RESIDENCE OR TO ADJUST STATUS

Current Status: Notice mailed welcoming the new permanent resident.

On February 13, 2007, we mailed you a notice that we had registered this customer's new permanent resident status. Please follow any instructions on the notice. Your new permanent resident card should be mailed within 60 days following this registration or after you complete any ADIT processing referred to in the welcome notice, whichever is later. If you move before you get your new card call customer service. You can also receive automatic e-mail updates as we process your case. Just follow the link below to register.

  7. We had to pay twice because of a mix up with the "customer service" line. We didn't get out NOA1 for so long, they told us to send in another application. Of course, eventually it was received and they filed both and everything we were told was wrong... We tried a lot to stop it but lo and behold... long story...

And lisanne, that is exactly what we're going to do! We're just going to pretend we never got the news! We'll see what happens..

Whoo, I'm a little more clear headed right now, but I'm still just as angry! I can't wait til this is over

  8. I'm so pissed right now! I feel like my head is going to explode I'm so angry at "my" government right now. Twice. That's right, twice is the number of times they have made me pay the application fees that we can't afford, and twice is also now the number of times that our interview has been descheduled. We changed our plans for my husbands travel and first big job since he got here so that he could be back for this interview even though it was at another loss to us. We didn't apply for AP because we had our interview theoretically in time for us to travel (supposedly in DECEMBER!) to see my sick father in law this summer and it'll probably be OK, but now I don't know if we can in time.. They just keep making me madder and madder- and my hubby's not even here to comfort me right now, and I'm just going crazy. Aaaah! I'm sorry for rambling and I don't even know if this makes sense, but I just need someone else who knows how crazy and ###### up this system is to tell me that everything's going to be OK because no one else I know here can even understand....

  9. So we finally got the EAD, and they spelled my husband's name wrong! It was spelled wrong on the NOA1, so we called and had it changed in the system immediately, and at an infopass appointment, we even had the IO double-check that it was correct! But still...

On the notice, it says to call, which we will do on Monday when they open again. In the meantime, is it OK for my hubby to start working or to get a new SS card? Will we have to forfeit this card to get a new one? Sorry for any repeat questions- all I could find was info on Green Cards and I didn't know if this was different.

    Thanks all

  10. I had not seen the reports that you could no longer get a walk in EAD, and we actually went to our office today to get one. We were told that about three months ago, people came and physically removed all of the machines from theirs and other offices. Apparently, there is a new process and law that the Missouri Service Center is supposed to allow them to go through them within the 90 days... Now all that they can do is make an inquiry and send another request. It just so happens that ours was approved on Jan 3rd (day 89!) even though our case status never changed and supposedly is at the printer... we'll see!

  11. "(2) Except as otherwise provided in article & of this Constitution, a person shall not be registered as a citizen of Ghana unless at the time of his application for registration he is able to speak and understand an indigenous language of Ghana. "

    Start studying!! ;)

Haha! My Dagbani, albeit limited, as my husband likes to say "is coming!" I think though, because it says "Except as otherwise provided" and it also says "7 (1) A woman married to a man is a citizen of Ghana" that should cover it.... Although, now that I think of it, that would make any married woman at all a Ghanaian citizen....

Hmm... I'm going to look more into this...! Thanks!

  12. I know that my Ghanaian husband can one day in the future achieve dual citizenship. My question, is if anyone knows if the American wife of a Ghanaian can get citizenship in Ghana? Anyone had any experience with this? It would sure be more convenient for travel in Africa, and we might be going back in a few months. Thanks all!

  13. Well, it should be a good thing that our interview was cancelled right? We were trying to reschedule anyway....

But our case is a little more complicated. Some of you may remember that I was on here a few weeks ago asking for advice because we had filed two applications accidentally. We called, and wrote letters requesting to cancel one of them, but no big surprise, they never responded. So, not wanting to pay the fees for both applications (he can't have two green cards anyway, right?!) we cancelled the checks at the bank, figuring that the 30 dollar fees were better payed than the several hundred dollar ones.

Well today, we recieved a whole pile of letters from USCIS. They finally figured out that we never payed them.. So, in addition to our new bills, and letters saying that the aforementioned applications have been cancelled, we recieved a letter saying that our interview date for the case that we DO want to keep has been cancelled. With the same notice date..........

What do you make of this? Do you think we're in deeper ###### than we realized? I really don't want this mess..... I sent letters and called a LONG time ago. ARG. We have an infopass appointment this Friday that was originally to try to reschedule our interview..... but we'll go anyways to try and sort this out.

But to ease our queazy stomaches, I would love it if some of you would give your imput- do you think this is related or just another cancelled interview?? What's going on and what should we do??

  14. I'm really going to go crazy- I don't know what to do. I'm going to end up insane before we ever get this finished. Is it ever really finished anyways?

Don't these people take holidays too? I just assumed that all places got the holiday break off. It's the only time I can travel, and I've been planning this trip for nearly a year, and I will really alienate my family if I don't go. My family is really important in my life, and this is really important to them- not to mention that it's to see family that might not really be around that much longer. No, it's not technically an 'emergency' but it's going to ###### a lot of things up in our lives if we don't go......... Why do they make it this hard? Is it purposely to keep people out of the country? Aaargh....

  15. So, we finally got our notice for an interview today, and of course of all of the times they could have picked, they picked the one week where we absolutely have to be out of town...

It says on the notice that we can reschedule in case of an emergency, which I suppose this is not, but we simply can't make it. And it also says that if we do reschedule it may really delay processing, might require steps to be repeated and affect eligibility for other immigration benefits.

So my questions is basically just how much are we going to screw things up or be delayed (even more) if we reschedule? Does anyone have experience with this?
