  1. Their GC will arrive in the mail anywhere from 4-8 weeks. If you don't receive it by then, call USCIS.

You can go to your local SS office and apply for SSN for your parents. They need to bring along their passports stamped with the I-155 stamp at the POE.

Driver's licenses; same thing - they need their passports with I-155 stamp, a lease as proof of address, utility bill, SSN (so you need to get them SSNs first), and any other document proving their status. Note that their passports would likely be stamped for 1yr at the POE until they receive their 10 yr GC in the mail so if you go to DMV in the next two or three months, their state IDs or Leaner's permit(depending on which you want to get them) will have that restriction on it. This means you would have to go back to DMV after you receive the GCs to remove the 1yr restriction. So it is best to wait to get the GC until you get them the state and other such IDs, unless they need the state IDs for something right away. Ofcourse, here in my state that's how it works but may be different in yours.

I know your parents CAN NOT receive any federal or state services/benefits until they're five years living here because of the I-864 and other laws. However, you can search online for organizations that will provide subsidized care like doctor's visit, vision & dental at affordable prices if you don't already have health insurance for them. Here in VA, the catholic church offers some services like that. Some state govts give subsidized help for emergency room stay only. So there are a lot of organizations and places you can search or go to, to get affordable services to alleviate some of the huge expenses you will be incurring for sponsoring and taking care of two parents here in America.

    Goodluck!

Thanks so much for your advice. Really helpful!!

  2. Hi,

I was wondering if I can submit DS 230 (IV package) without the police clearance from Malaysia and state it (the certificate) will be provided at embassy?

will the NVC just issue a RFE or they allow it? any experiences anyone?

the reason I am exploring this way is as Malasian certificate takes 6weeks or so, and my spouse will just apply for one - i wanted to save the time of waiting for pcc then submit IV packet by submitting the IV packet and state Malaysian clearance will be provided at embassy.

    Hi,

I saw you already being scheduled for the interview at the embassy last month. Did you end up sent the police clearance certificate along with your DS-230 package?

  3. Hi all,

I read all the posts under this threat. It seems, most people apply for K-1 and IR-1.

    I didn't see a single post for IR-5.

    Anyone?

My parents NVC case was completed last week, 10/23. Currently, I am waiting for email notification for interview schedule at US Embassy in Malaysia. Wondering you guys have any ideas how long does it takes to schedule for interview after the case is completed at NVC?

Also, I sent all original civil documents along with the DS-230 form including the Certificate of Good Conduct.

In this case, when my parents go for interview, do they need to bring any documents along with them?

  5. Only those in the EP program generally get case complete emails. For everyone else, you need to call NVC to find out.

You will get an email about the interview date though, as long as you provided both email addresses when you first got a case number assigned. As for WHEN, it always varies by country. Some people find out within a few days from case complete, others a few weeks.

I somehow received email notification that my parents case were completed. FYI, I am NOT doing electronic processing.

When I called today, I was told the case were completed on 10/23 but I only received the email notification from NVC yesterday, 10/30.

Interview date is still not yet available.

  6. To Likuliku,

I happened to call the NVC the same day before I received the email.

On the phone I was told my case would be passed to the consulate that day. The agent told me to contact the consulate about the interview date when I asked about it.

Then a few hours later, I got the email saying the NVC had completed its processing of XXX's petition and the interview date is also mentioned in the email.

    Hi Chelsea_dd,

    Did you do electronic processing?

My parents case completed yesterday when I called this morning but i didn't receive any email from NVC.

also, when I asked about the interview date, they said dunno yet.

  7. Is it ok for us (me or my husband) to translate his mother's documents for submission? Or is this looked upon with suspicion? When I applied for the K-1 I translated and then had a friend that was also fluent sign off on it. We no longer live close by. Should I ask another friend or can we just do it ourselves?

    Thanks!

I remember I read somewhere that the translator shouldn't have any relationship with the beneficiary. So, I suggest a close friend to sign-off for the translation. I did the same.

  8. It depends on the embassy. Some people whose case were completed a few days before me were scheduled for October interview. Mine was completed on 9/17 and I've seen people with interview scheduled whose case were completed on 9/12 for October.

    Hey ca_babe,

Wondering whether you have got your interview schedule?

It has been almost a month since your case completed at NVC right?

I just mailed out my DS-230 package and NVC should have received it today.

So, I need to call up to check the status to see whether it has been completed at the NVC end, am I correct?

  9. about 7-10 days if no RFE.

So, it seems within 2-3 weeks I should have my NVC case completed after they received my DS-230 package.

I just checked the online payment status. It is still "IN PROGRESS" despite I made the online payment on Friday, 9/21.

I decided to have my sister hand-carry all the documents and mail it out early October.

Hope to have the case completed in October...

I read other posts, it seems it takes another 2 months for the Embassy to schedule the interview after NVC case is completed.

Is this 2 months a standard? Or depends on embassy as well?

So, do my parents receive same day notice whether their visa is approved or not during the interview?

  10. I just received email from NVC to make the IV payment. I also just did online and now waiting for my status to change to PAID before sending in my DS-230 package. I expect the status will change to PAID on Monday, 9/24.

All documents are with my parents in my home country. My sister is visiting me in US 8 Oct. Wondering whether I should ask my parents to mail these documents now or just ask my sister to bring them over during her visit? I know, it is only 2 weeks from now, but I just can't wait...:)

Wondering what is the timeline to have NVC complete the case from the moment they received my DS-230 package? I assume this is the final package before the interview process, am I right? Also, how long before my parents will be notify for their interview after the case completed at NVC?

  11. I tried this too, but listed it in a cover letter. Just sent it last Friday and haven't heard anything yet, one way or the other.

    Good luck!

I just called to NVC and they confirmed that I send provide the photocopy of the civil documents if I have already provided the original one in the other related case. What I need to do, just provides a note and states that the original document is in the whatever case number.
