  1. felicitations monsieur et madame for passing the test, i bet it is the easiest one you ever had. you are not a US citizen until you take your oath. time depends on various local offices and the people in queue. mine took 3 months after the interview as my local office was not a big busy one.To answer to your question, you can't apply for a US passport as the applicant has to submit the certificate of naturalization at the time of US pp applications.you can apply moments after you have that in your hand on the day of oath ceremony. once again congratulations. it is a great feeling.

Thanks, that's what I thought. A bit of a bummer, because when I was planning to go to Canada will likely be a few days after my ceremony, so there will not be enough time to get a passport. Oh well! Glad my test is done!

  2. Congratssssss! :)

I have my interview on Jan 23rd, so I m studying and getting myself ready.

One question, do they go through ALL the information u put on the N400 form? or just some sections of it??

I ve been watching some videos on youtube ( I know I shouldn' t believe everything I see there) and it seems they ask u how many times have u been outside the US since u became a permanent resident and when was the last time u left, where, etc

I ve been out a total of 6 times and i remember the destinations but I am afraid I ll have a hard time remembering the exact dates of all the times I was outside the US in that period..

Should I be concerned? or they don't ask that much detail??

I am gonna try to be relaxed and confident ( that s why I wannabe prepared) so I pass, wish me luck!

And congrats on passing your test again! :)

Thanks! The officer didn't go through everything on my form. I think if she had any concerns (previous arrests, marriages, divorces, etc.) she may have, but she just asked if I was affiliated with any communist or terrorist groups (of course not!). I didn't get asked about any trips out of the country, but mine were pretty much self-explanatory (going back to France to visit my family, and I was never gone more than 2 weeks). I know every interview is different, and every officer does things a bit differently, but I wouldn't be too concerned!

Congrats! We went to Lawrence too and our status hasn't changed yet even though we were approved. My guess is that we will be notified in January for the February 15th ceremony!

Good to know. Might see you at the ceremony then!

  3. I just passed my naturalization interview this morning (yay!), and was told my oath ceremony would be sometime in February. I had plans to go to Canada mid-February, but I have a feeling my oath ceremony will be right before. Now that I am a US citizen (with dual citizenship with France), do I need to wait until I have my US passport to leave the country? Can I apply for my US passport today, or do I need to wait until after my oath ceremony to apply?

  4. Passed my interview this morning! In and out in less than 30 minutes. Read and wrote one sentence, answered 6 questions, and they asked me if I was affiliated with any communist or terrorist groups. And then I was done. Was told my oath ceremony should be sometime in February.

Could someone update the table for me? I always have a hard time editing it.

    In-Line Letter/Date - never received anything

    Interview Letter - 11/17/16

Interview - 12/27/16 in Lawrence, MA, instead of Boston

    Form Type - IOE

Any idea how long it takes to get notification of when your ceremony is?

  5. I have my interview on December 27th, and it says I need to bring my marriage certificate, my spouse's birth certificate, and proof of registering in the Selective Service. Do these need to be originals, or can I just make a photocopy to bring? I believe I submitted copies with my package (I cannot remember, honestly), so would I need to get the originals? Where would I get an original birth certificate?

  6. Hi all - we had our interview today (Lawrence, MA instead of Boston) and they said my husband passed! :) Now waiting for the status change and oath notification!

Hi KTEAM, just saw this message. Congrats! I have my appointment at the Lawrence office on the 27th. Any idea where the oath ceremony will be held? I heard interviews that take place in Lawrence do not have the oath ceremonies in Boston, but not sure if that is true or not.

  7. These are the upcoming oath dates in MA http://www.mad.uscourts.gov/general/pdf/Nat%20Cerm%20FY-17%20USCIS.pdf

I'm not 100% sure but I believe Lawrence FO do not use the Faneuil Hall for their oaths. If that's the case at earliest you're looking Jan 25th at Mechanics Hall in Worcester, next one after that is on Feb 15th at Lowell Auditorium. You could ask them if they do oaths at Faneuil Hall after the interview. Good luck!

This is extremely helpful, thank you!

  8. Finally got my interview letter. Dated 11/17/16, my interview will be on 12/27/16 at 10:10am in the Lawrence, MA office (instead of the Boston office). Kind of a relief that it is in Lawrence, instead of Boston, because that is a bit less of a pain to get to! The letter said that my interview will take about 2 hours, and I will be tested on reading/writing/speaking English. Is that in addition to the government and history test, or evaluated during the government and history test. I have been studying the questions on the book and CD I received, but is there any other prep I should do?

Any idea when the oath would be? It looks like sometimes it is the day after the interview, and other times it is a couple of weeks after. I suppose I won't find out until after my interview, but I would like to give my boss some notice for the oath ceremony (same for my wife, who would like to attend the ceremony).

Also, never got an in-line letter or date, and my form type is IOE.

  9. Sorry, I couldn't figure out how to edit the original one with rich text mode, but here is my timeline thus far.

  10. So I received a letter of approval Friday (yay!).

    Date of Decision: 05-31-2016

    Date Letter Received: 06-03-2016

The letter also says that I should receive my green card within 60 days, during which I cannot travel outside of the US. I don't have any plans to travel outside the US, but I am also hoping to file for my citizenship on June 20th (earliest date possible). I know I can't file until I get my new green card, but does it really take 60 days?!

  11. I am working on my N-400 application. Question #9 asks about involvement in any associations/organizations/clubs/etc. I was in the French Navy, had a couple memberships with churches, and volunteer with non-profits. As a result, I am selecting "Yes" for that question.

9B asks: If you answered “Yes,” provide the information below. If you need extra space, attach the names of the other groups on the additional sheets of paper and provide any evidence to support your answers.

What evidence do I need to provide to support my answers? I have a certificate from the Navy, but the rest I don't have anything in paper proving my involvement.

    Thoughts?

  12. Hi, I am a French citizen, living in the US, filing my N-400 next month. I want to keep my French citizenship. I don't think there is anything on the US-end I need to do to ensure that, but is there anything I need to to on the French-end to make sure that getting my US citizenship will not take away my French citizenship? Or is it automatically recognized as dual?

  13. Still no approval for us. But since we filed with VSC, I am not too hopeful it will come anytime soon.

In the meantime, I am putting together my paperwork for naturalization, which I can send in on June 20th. It asks for a copy of my green card. Since I have not yet received my new one, I am putting in my expired one, along with the extension notice. Is there anything else I should include with that (aside from all the other N-400 documentation)? Also, on the off chance my new green card gets approved before 6/20, but I have not received it yet, do I need to wait on sending all my N-400 paperwork in, until I have my new green card in hand (to make a photocopy)?

Let me know if this question would be better asked in the naturalization forum.

  14. I am hopefully starting a new job next month. Still waiting on my 10-year GC. My two-year one expired back in September. I have the extension letter, which is good through September, but will I have any issues with background checks and paperwork? I am hoping my card comes in soon, but I filed back in June 2015 with the VSC, so I don't have much hope it'll come in anytime soon. I will be filing my N-400 as soon as I can. It's been hard enough finding a job in my field (aviation technician), so now that I have found one, I don't want to be penalized due to the USCIS taking forever on my i-751!

  15. Kels and Sam!

I've done the whole process and the rules didn't changed since. I can tell you that in your case you have to wait until 5 years officially living together in States. I know it's confusing. Because 4 yrs rule applies only If you would've be able to prove that you lived in France with your husband at least 3 years. I had same situation, I lived overseas the entire time, and they told me this is clearly a "5 yrs rule".

Regarding French level. In my case I didn't provided anything that would justify my integrity with French culture (I wasn't enrolled in alliance francaise) Nor I had any document to justify my level of French. I guess I had one French visa in my passport, one trip to France and that's it. My interview was in French and I speak French better that majority of applicants (according to consul) so I don't remember, she somehow helped me because she said that would've be ridiculous for me to take an extra french exam. She said she saw many applicants barely speaking French and they still got citizenship, they attended French courses. I believe you can enrol in online courses or ask them what will be acceptable in your case. I'm telling you my story and what I have personally heard, yet talk to them before deciding what course to chose etc.

Thank you for your advice! My husband was at the French consulate in Boston on Monday, and they gave him this website: http://www.consulfrance-washington.org/spip.php?article258 to check out. That's where I got tripped up about needing to take an exam. I am fine to do an interview in French, but I would hate to fork out $200 to take an exam - when the results are only good for 1 or 2 years. French bureaucracy at its finest. Did you have to go to Washington DC for your interview? My husband was told that Boston used to do interviews, but now they are only done in DC.
