  1. My fi and I have been trying to plan a last hurrah before his visa interview and subsequent "ban" from entering the US until he is ready to enter the US for our marriage. Just to be on the safe side, he emailed the Paris consulate a few days ago to find out whether or not they had received his packet 3 (he is currently working in Brazil, mail is complicated). This morning he got an email reply along the lines of "of course they received his packet, he's scheduled for an interview on April 24, and all of the information he needs is in the letter he received"... except he hasn't received the letter, or his parents haven't, anyway, because that's where all of his mail has been directed since they live in France and can receive things more quickly.

And now... oh shoot, how is he going to squeeze in a visit here before going to his interview? We thought we'd have more than 2 weeks to plan this out!!!!

Anyway, HALLELUJIAH! THE INTERVIEW IS SCHEDULED!!! This is perhaps all that I really wished to convey.

  2. This is super!

I've never been asked any questions while going to visit my fiance in France.

My fiance however, has had some questioning while coming to visit me since our engagement.

The first time they looked twice at him was when he was proposing to me. He had the ring in his bag, and I guess the customs officer asked him "does she know?". Cute. Sort of.

His first trip to the US after our engagement, I did my best to inform him of what was going to happen when he went to customs. After telling the customs officer that he is coming to visit me, he was told "you can't get married on this trip" and he suitably informed them that he didn't intend to at this time... blah blah blah. We hadn't yet filed any of the paperwork because this was still over a year before we intend to get married.

Then 1 year prior to our hopeful wedding date arrives and we submitted the K-1 packet.

The next time he came to the US primarily for a work meeting. Since we happen to be in similar lines of work, I attend some of the same meetings. It works out conveniently for us. They asked purpose for visit and he told them it was for business. Not much in the way of questions.

His last trip to visit was over Christmas. He got a few more questions this time and explained to them that we were in the process of applying for K1 visa and he's currently got a job in Brazil, but they didn't ask for proof of anything.

Here's to hoping we can get one more visit in before we hopefully get married this summer!

(And curses on USCIS if a year isn't enough time for them to process our paperwork!!!)

  3. :thumbs:Pretty easy to do, file and wait 7 months or so till the process is completed and you get your visa. Both of you review the K1 guides and WIKI as well as USCIS direct. Good Luck.

7 months if you're lucky. Probably closer to 10. Been waiting almost 6 months for NOA2. 6-7 months from NOA1 to NOA2 seems to be the current average, and then up to a few more months at your local consulate.

  4. My fiance and I met as graduate students living in different countries. He's now finished his program, and I (the USC) am still finishing my PhD. Since my plan is to finish my dissertation in the couple of months before our planned wedding date (August 2013), does anyone have suggestions for how to deal with the affidavit of support form? The whole reason we're waiting until after my defense is because his current job (abroad) will be ending around the same time, so we can finally pursue employment together in the same country.

I am currently employed as a graduate assistant and miraculously have a salary greater than the 125% cutoff for support, BUT I'm hoping to hightail it out of here with my PhD before we marry. I do not yet have a job offer for post graduation, since that's still about 6 months away... but a PhD in my area means I'm highly employable and will almost certainly have a decently paying job by the time we get married.

So, does anyone have input for what I should be doing with this affidavit of support? Thanks a lot!

  5. Hi! I am in a similar situation, we submitted the paperwork on August 3, 2012, and plan to get married on August 3, 2013.

An option that you could consider if the visa isn't finished processing yet is having the wedding celebration and keep all of the venue bookings, but just having to hold off on the legal marriage until USCIS gets their heads out of their collective rear ends. As someone previously mentioned, you can just go to a justice of the peace for the legal marriage ceremony at another time. It's kind of a lame plan, but it's our backup plan.

I think it is absolutely inexcusable that USCIS cannot keep to a reasonably timed schedule to allow international couples to be comfortable making wedding plans according to their chosen schedule.

edit: and now I see that reese1 suggested the same thing. Anyway, good luck to you!
