Oh god
I was going to apply for my SS card next week too, so i think i will have the same problem, but im wondering what if i take my marriage certificate and my passport to the SS office, its supposed that they will show my maiden name, right? then i wouldnt have any problem
I hope so
OLY AND DIDIER
I brought my marriage certificate (and passport, which they do need, but it doesn't help apparently) and the woman was not even interested in looking at it
I guess they need 'official' confirmation from immigration in order to give me a card. (one would think that my green card is official enough! nobody can fake those things, with all the holograms.. sheesh.)

Your name on the USCIS computer system will be the same as the name on your greencard..... the name on the SSA system could be your maiden name or your married name..... they are two different systems.... The SSA having the wrong name will have no effect on your ability to travel as the officers at POE will swipe your greencard and have access to your USCIS case..
Kez
I'm confused as to why the SS system has my info? I would think, if they had it in their own separate system that USCIS sent it to them; but why would they send the wrong info?

Also, I can imagine this could cause problems at the border if I were to leave the country - what would happen once they scanned my card and the last name that came up was different? This is really irritating and I hope it doesn't take months to fix considering that we have travel plans.

apatheticsnail,
This kind of problem is why it's recommended that K1s get their SS card promptly after entry and before marriage. Having the card is important, changing the name on the card can always wait.
Yodrak
After I entered the US I spoke with someone at immigration (two people actually) along with someone from social security. Everyone told me I wouldn't be able to apply for a SS number until after I got my green card despite anything I had read online.
I'll probably be making an infopass appointment ASAP or at least call immigration, maybe both. The woman at SS was sending out my info for verification today and told me once my identity was confirmed, my card would be sent out. I not only had my green card on me, but my passport (with visa, in maiden name), marriage certificate, birth certificate. She didn't even want to see the last two even though the marriage certificate proves that I am who I say I am... what a headache.

I received my green card earlier this week, and today I went to apply for a social security number. When they looked up the number on my card however, my immigration file showed up under my maiden name, not my married name - even though my married name is the name on my green card, and the name I've used to apply for AOS!!! They have to verify that my green card is real, I guess, so now I have to wait at least another month before I can get a SSN.. if I can even be approved. I am so frustrated, my married name is on my card but not associated with the number? How does that even make sense?

I had some pretty negative experiences with civil surgeons though everything worked out in the end!
After I had my medical done in Canada I realized they never gave me a copy of the vaccination sheet, so I had to contact them from the US and have them fax it to me which was a huge hassle. Then I had to find a civil surgeon here (RI) who would transfer that info to the vaccination supplement for the GC application.. it took forever to find someone since the list immigration gave me was apparently incorrect and listed a bunch of people who weren't certified, or refused to transfer the info. I finally found one and I spoke with the doctor himself on the phone and he told me he could transfer the information for 25$. But when we went in to the office both he and the secretaries acted like they'd never spoken with me, they had no idea who I was or what I was talking about (and it was the same office)! They kept saying I needed to have the entire medical done. The doctor himself was very sick looking, smelly, and unprofessional, in dirty casual clothing, no name tag, and when he came out I thought he was a patient, not the doctor. After explaining myself about 50 times he agreed to do it, and he didn't even fill the form out properly - he left some parts blank and copied the wrong dates for the wrong shots. Ughhh. Luckily, there were no problems with that and I have my card now!

My green card just came in the mail yesterday... what a shock, considering that I only got the approval notice e-mail late last week! I haven't even received the welcome notice in the mail yet. So much for 60 days.. I can't believe all of the security features on the card, it's amazing. Tomorrow I go apply for a SSN!
Just a quick question.. for anyone who has traveled after receiving their green card, did you have any problems or hassles re-entering the US? We'll be going up to Canada (where I'm from) next spring for only a week or so. I know my GC means I'm legally a resident, but border security isn't always very nice as I'm sure everyone knows. (We'll definitely be avoiding the Niagara Falls entry point...!) I just want to be prepared in case there is anything I should bring (besides my GC, of course). Also, should I apply for another Canadian passport now with my married name? I know I can't apply for an American passport until I'm a citizen, and I imagine I'll need a new passport before I can travel anywhere. Thanks in advance!

Unfortunately my husband makes about half of the required 125%, since he is on disability and unable to work. However my father in law makes more than enough, and was also the co-sponsor for my K-1.
-
That makes sense, thanks. I re-read the instructions and understand the household size question better. Now I am trying to figure out if we should stick with the sponsor and cosponsor, or if my father-in-law should combine his income with my husband's and only use one 864 (and 864a). There might not be any difference, but we made an infopass appointment tomorrow anyway.

I am here on a K-1 visa and currently about to file for AOS. I am just a bit confused about the affidavit of support.
On form I-864, Question 21 'Sponsor's Household Size' - what does the term 'household' actually mean? It asks for number of dependents, as well as number of immigrants sponsored (1, myself) spouse, etc. I am asking because my father-in-law is my co-sponsor so according to this form I am counted as a part of his household. He also has to put down my husband as a dependent (my husband is on disability). Along with my mother-in-law, that would make the total household size 4 people. On the affidavit my husband filled out, our household only has 2 people - myself, and him. How does this make sense?
(To add to the confusion, the question also states not to count anyone twice, but it asks to put "1" for spouse if currently married, and yet "1" for the principal sponsored immigrant - that would be counting me twice!)
It is obviously possible to claim a dependent who isn't a part of the household, so I'm really confused about this. The example I-864 is completely outdated and doesn't even have this section, so it hasn't been any help.
Also, would this mean my husband and father-in-law have to fill out I-864A: Contract between sponsor and household member? To those who don't know, this is necessary if the sponsor is combining their income with a relative who 'shares residence' to meet povery guidelines. In my case, my husband and I do share a 'principal residence' with my father-in-law, but legally we are different 'households', and my father-in-law is the joint sponsor - they are NOT combining incomes/assets. The term 'household' and 'principal residence' are different yet they are being used interchangeably on these forms. To emphasize my point, if we were considered part of the same 'household' my husband would not be eligible for benefits, because of my father-in-law's six figure income!
Hopefully this made sense to someone.
social security issues despite having GC...
in Adjustment of Status (Green Card) from K1 and K3 Family Based Visas

But it's been over 6 months since my entry, and my information still hasn't been updated. I was told by social security within a month after I entered that I wouldn't be able to apply yet.
One would think that my marriage certificate, passport, birth certificate, visa, as well as other documents all in my maiden name would suffice at proving that I am who I say I am.
