  1. Good Morning Everyone,

I have a question and I wanted to turn to you guys to see if I can get some advice. My wife is from Colombia who arrived on a CR-1 Visa in October of 2012. We have been going through the motions but lately an idea has risen and I was curious if I could go anywhere with it. My wife was born to a U.S. citizen in Colombia which, if I interpret it correctly, makes her a U.S. citizen. Sadly though her father took off on her and her mother when my wife was very young and essentially vanished back into the U.S. No paperwork was filed when my wife was born with the Embassy in Bogota and her father (who we recently found) has been difficult to work with and does not seem to eager to help us out. My mother in law still has all of the original paperwork such as marriage license, marriage certificate, my wife's birth certificate all with my father in law's signature on them. My question is can I pursue citizenship for my wife without the help of her father and how could we go about starting this? As of this moment we are waiting to start the removal of her conditions and we were wondering if the fact that she was born abroad to a U.S. citizen in 1987 makes her a citizen.

  2. Good Morning,

My wife is from Colombia and applying for a CR1 visa. She has her interview scheduled for October 17th at 8:30am. With the expected date of her arrival fast approaching I find myself ridden with guilt and pressure. I must say that my wife works, a lot, and I have not seen her since July 18th and maybe spoken to her a total of 1 hour since I last saw her. When I do speak to her she says she is sad, and who could blame her? To be pulled away from everything and everyone you know and to go to a place you have never been must be mentally and emotionally exhausting. This is where the guilt and the pressure come into play. I feel tremendous guilt for baring the responsibility of taking her from her home. I feel tremendous pressure of knowing that I need to be a good man and a good husband. I know that I must be patient and understanding and I have done, and am doing, all that I know to make myself better and make myself sure. I miss my wife. I miss her smile and I miss her laugh and yet at moments like this I feel so bad. I even feel guilty for saying that I feel bad (If that makes any sense). I do not expect anyone to respond to this or even understand it. I just needed a moment to clear my head and get this off of my chest.

    Thank You

    Good Day and Good Luck.

  3. Good Morning,

After the USCIS has completed your case it will then be sent to the National Visa Center in New Hampshire. I would read up on that process and try to get that documentation ready. Such as Tax transcripts, Photos, and original copies or certified copies of Marriage Documents and birth certificates. You can also check out some threads on here about the NVC process. GOOD LUCK!!!!!

  4. Good Afternoon Everyone,

I had a question that my wife and I need some help with. My wife is a 26 year woman from Colombia and we are applying for a CR1 Visa. Our NVC case was completed as of 8/16/2012 and we are awaiting an interview date with the U.S. Embassy in Bogota. We are worried about the vaccination and medical exam process. I have heard absolute horrible things about Dr. Roa and his practices and I am nervous that I will have to spend a small fortune on vaccinations. If it turns out that my wife needs most or all of the vaccinations, how much cash am I looking to spend here? I am under the impression that it will be a few hundred dollars. Any help or advice would be awesome.

    Thank You and Good Luck!!!

  6. Hi!

my fiance is buying his plane ticket to come to the US but the travel agency is telling him he has to buy a round trip ticket. at this point round trip tickets are a lot more expensive than a one way ticket. I am assuming the airline will not know what a K-1 visa is and I am afraid they wont let him get on the plane because he does not have a round trip ticket. Has anyone had a recent experience traveling with a K1 visa and a one way ticket?

Thanks in advance for the help

If she is coming here as a resident and intends to live here then I would skip the travel agent, find another one, or buy the ticket directly from the airline. What the travel agent is suggesting is very suspicious.

Congratulations and I wish you the best.

  7. It all depends on when your case was completed by the NVC. If it was completed during the first two weeks of the month, the NVC tries to schedule the interview for the following month depending on the embassy's availability. If they completed it during the last two weeks of the month, they schedule the interview for the month after. Ex.: if your case was completed on 8/10, you will probably have an interview in September. If it was completed on 8/27, you will most likely have your interview in October. Again, it all depends on the embassy and a few months ago they were pushing the dates an extra month, but that doesn't appear to be the case any more.

If you have any other questions, you can ask them in the Colombia Club thread. They're easier to find that way.

    Hey Diana,

My case was listed as Complete on Thursday (8/16/2012). Based on what I am reading, I can expect a Visa interview in October. That is okay. I know she wants to finish her semester and then spend some time with her mom on San Andres. It is still very comforting to know that the NVC case is complete. One step closer.

    Thank you Again

  8. hey Joe Kwa,

if you take a look at my profile and status updates you can have some sort of idea how long our case took.

Our case was completed on June 19 and on June 27 (called NVC and DoS daily) my wife's interview was set for August 28 at Bogotá.

We were so happy that we got through the NVC phase in only 20 days but then disappointed that the interview was set 2 months later but as of today 11 days to go!!!

    Good luck! :)

I will certainly do that. Thank you very much for your help. That is awesome about you getting past the NVC that fast. Good luck to you and your wife and I wish you the best

  9. Good Morning Everyone,

I had a quick, but I am sure a very common, question. I am a U.S. Citizen petitoning my wife in Colombia for a CR-1 visa. I called the NVC yesterday to inquire about a checklist and I was told that all paperwork and had been received, is in order and the case has been completed. My question is, how long does it take for the NVC to schedule the interview? I know it is different for every consulate but I was wondering if anyone had experience with the embassy in Bogota. Any feedback would be awesome.

    Thank You

    Good Day and Good Luck!

  10. Receiving the vac's over again will not hurt you; so it shouldn't hold up your process, just get the medical done and forward!!

Well, I guess the best thing to do here is hope for the best and plan for the worst. Since there is no way of getting around this and she MUST have this medical exam, I will do what I have to do. If it costs a small fortune, so be it. I miss her. I want her here and I will do whatever must be done to make that happen.

Thank you all for support and information.

    Joe Kwa

  11. yup, it'll get collected by a government employee mail room clerk.

I called the NVC just to be sure and they said they do not pick them up or make any attempt to do so. I am hoping she was simply lazy and did not wasnt to look into it. I am going to call the post office to see if I can arrange re-delivery.

    Thank You,

    Joe Kwa

  12. I'm glad to see there are now four doctors instead of two. is only a matter of time until they all realize that DoS has given them carte blanche to sell vaccinations to everyone, regardless of whether they really need them or not

It sounds like your experience was pretty awful. I hope that everything worked out for you. I had read that President Santos had disbanded the DOS. Hopefully that has made things better and easier. But I digress, I will stay away from Doctor Roa. If you don't mind me asking, how much does it cost to get all of those vaccinations? It must cost a fortune.

  13. Dr. Roa, who is one of the two panel physicians for all of Colombia, is in the business of selling shots. He will make you get them all over again, even if you got them all from him a year ago

The packet I received has Four physicians listed. And what if I wanted to see Dra. Monica Caicedo? The female doctor to care for my wife. And isn't getting repeated vaccinations dangerous?

In lieu of the missing medical records, a civil surgeon could obtain serological antibody titer tests to determine whether the beneficiary has adequate circulating antibodies against the diseases mentioned on the medical form, and then vaccinate as necessary.

That is in essence what we are going to have to do with my wife from northern China, she has very limited vaccination records. So for the AOS process, we have appointments on Monday with a civil surgeon here in Seattle for the wife and stepson, and git 'er done in that manner. Likely not the cheapest, will require another appointment to follow-up on the blood test results. However, in reality, it is best for their health and well-being.

    YMMV

Good luck on your visa journey.

Thank you very much. This was extremely helpful. I called my wife and she stated that it is possible that the strike will be resolved next week. I will keep my fingers crossed and thank you again for you advice and kind words.
