Now it's kind of clear but "what is once visa number is available? what about it?"
And, should I get a lawyer at this point even though I think I can file everything?

Thanks a lot for letting me know that!! . I will start working on the documents though.

Thanks , I've updated my timeline.

My current status in US : h1b visa
My wife's status : permanent resident
I130 applied : June 2012
I130 approved : June 2013
Applied at Vermont service center.
Priority date is current right now. What confused the hell out of me is : how do I get a visa number? Do I've to wait to get it or can I go ahead and apply I485 at this point.
It's confusing because on USCIS site one place it says once priority date becomes available you can apply for I485 if you're in US and at another place on USCIS it says you can apply for I485 once visa number is available.

@sam271985 : I've my I130 approved last month but I don't have a visa number yet - I assume I can't apply until I've a visa number. Do you know how long it takes to get the visa number after you get the approval.?

Hi Fellas,
My wife(permanent resident) applied for my I130 (priority date : June 2012, approved as of June 2013 and I'm currently in US on H1B visa).
The F2A category became current today. Now we're trying to figure out next steps we need to take but have following doubts:
- Will USCIS send us visa number automatically now without us doing anything? If so, how long should that take?
- Once we get visa number, we need to send I485?
- Will the request for Affidavit of support and interview follow after that?
- Right now, what documents should we get together?
Thanks in advance. Any help/suggestions will be highly appreciated!

@listeria: thanks, that helps!

Thanks @Penguin_ie and @listeria.
@listera : what's the difference between consular processing and the other option to it? I'm not aware about it, I thought filing I485 (change of status) is the only way to get GC after PD is current. Thanks!

My case is as follows:
Aug 2008 : came to US (from India) on student visa(F1)
October 2010 : changed status to H1B visa
June 25 2012 : got married to green card holder(Indian citizen)
June 26 2012 : sent I130 application
June 27, 2012 : Priority date for green card application(F2A)
Now I see that the visa bulletin says priority date is Feb 2010 so I assume it will take about 2.5 years or so for my PD to get current, thereafter I will apply for change of status(I485).
Now what I'm trying to understand here is,
- How long does it take to get green card after PD is current?
- My H1B will expire Oct 2016, what are the chances of me getting green card before that?
- Let's say my H1B expires before I get the green card, what will be the options for me to stay in US?
Thanks in advance!!
