Just by looking at the checklist of things to submit, this application does not seem particularly complex. Do most of you do this by yourself or hire an attorney? And how long will the entire process take?

Here is my situation:

- I became a USC in March.

- Both of my parents are outside of the country.

Now I would like to start a GC process for my parents. Seemed that I have two options:

1. File for I-130 while my parents wait outside of the country.

2. Have my parents apply for a traveling visa to enter the country. Then apply for I-130/I-485.

My questions are:

1. Which process makes more sense to me? (less time, less cost, fewer procedures, etc)

2. My parents had a plan to do some traveling in the US in the next few months. Should they postpone that plan till the GC process is done?

Good to know. Did you have to hand over your naturalization certificate when you turned in the passport application?

Yes. So the certificate was only with me for less than 30min. But if you wanna make a copy of it, you will have to apply your passport at the post office afterward.

Congrats to you, good to hear of a local getting citizenship.

When will you go to the social security office, is this after the passport arrives ?

The instruction says I need to show them my passport at the SS office. So guess I have to wait.

Congratulations on your oath ceremony. Was it at the USCIS office or in Campbell? Any other details you can give about the ceremony would be really helpful. Hopefully we'll be there in May! Thanks!

Mine was held in Campbell. There were 400+ ppl there to become citizens. I heard there were two sessions going on, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Mine was scheduled in the morning. I arrived 9:30 sharp, with my notification letter and greencard. I forgot to fill out the back of the questionnaire. So did that on the spot. Then I handed both the letter and the greencard to the person guiding us to the seat. It felt a bit sad to see him toss my greencard in the box (more like a trash bin) simply cuz I only got the card for a couple of months and never got to use it. Anyways, the ceremony went a little bit over an hour. Then they handed us our naturalization certificate row by row, which was quite efficient. After that, everyone hurried to join the line for the passport application, which you need to bring the actually application, two photos and a checkbook (or money order). I had to run to the bank to get a cashier's check cuz I didn't realize that I had used the last check in my checkbook. But that wasn't too bad. When I got back 20min later, the long line was down to a couple of ppl.

That was it. A good day to become a U.S. citizen

Done with oath today.

They set up a booth for passport application after the ceremony. I submitted my passport application and selected 2 1/2 week processing.

Question - does anyone know if the 2 1/2 means the time from submission to getting the passport in hand? Because I need to start looking for air tickets to travel back home and visit my folks. Need to know when I can get this thing done.

Received my oath letter. Scheduled for 03/21. I heard I can apply for my US passport at the oath ceremony. How long does it take for me to get my passport?

I'm done with the interview. Passed with flying colors

Here is my interview experience. Hope it helps whoever is still anxiously waiting for the interview.

I applied based on 3-yr marriage. Interview was scheduled for 8:35AM at the San Jose office. We arrived around 8:20AM. After the security checkpoint, we were told to show our interview letter and our IDs. Then we were sent to the 2nd floor where there was a decent-sized waiting room with around 30 people already waiting. The room has multiple doors and two windows where you drop off your interview letter to join the waiting list. When a door opens, either a name is called or a interviewee exits. After 30mins, my name was called. A very kind 50ish Filipino guy led me to his office. I was asked to stand and raise my right hand for oath. Then we got into the first part of the interview: information verification. Some basic questions were asked first, like my full name and address and my marital status. At the same time, he pulled out this gigantic block of file and started flipping through it. He asked how my married life was. I said it was ok (just like any married person would say). He also asked me about my wife's occupation and my last trip abroad. During the whole time, he was stamping and check-marking some paperwork. He then asked me if I had filed tax for last year and quickly realized that it might be too early for filing tax cuz most people wait till the last minute to do it. To his surprise, I said yes, we did e-file our tax recently online and handed him a copy of the tax forms. He only asked for tax from last year. Then he asked how we celebrated Chinese New Year. I told him we went a Vietnanmese restaurant, which he happened to know. He seemed to be satisfied with all the anwsers and decided to move on the the second part of the interview: English + Civics test. Those were very standard just like any of the other interview experience described. I passed all six questions. Then he handed me a paper with a big "Congratulations" on it, and told me to wait for my oath letter. We shaked hands and I exit with a big smile.

That's it. Now I hope the oath letter will come soon.

Someone copied an older copy of the time table. My info is not up-to-date. Can anyone add the info back?

Also, I just received a yellow slip asking me to bring more documents to the interview. The additional documents are actually included in the checklist of the interview letter already. So not sure why they consider it as "additional".

Hey, guys. I've just got my 10 yr GC. It was a long journey for us. We submitted our I-751 in Feb, got RFE in July and approved just mid Oct. According to the timeline, I'm able to submit my N-400 as early as next month.

I've been watching this thread and it is very helpful to me. Most people here have already gone through the interview. I expect my interview date (even though I have not started preparing my package yet ) to be somewhere in Jan 2013 (if I file in Nov). I understand that they will ask for proof of marriage, just like the I-751. My question is, to what extend? Are we expected to just bring evidences we have submitted with our I-751 package? What other evidences should we bring? I couldn't think of much, since the two applications are so close to each other.

I checked the page yesterday and got "we ordered production of your new card"! Yay!

Quick update since my last post:

- RFE needed to be mailed before 10/15. We mailed it using overnight and arrived on 10/12.

- Did a lot of digging into all the stuff we have. Got a list of following items to send

• All bank statements before account was closed
  
• Costco membership statement
  
• Coupons with our names
  
• Life insurance with each other has beneficiaries (can't believe we didn't send this at the beginning)
  
• All patient registration forms from our doctor's office with each other as emergency contacts
  
• More affidavits from our co-workers
  

- Checked the page and see "On October 17, 2012, we ordered production of your new card" (for some reason, no SMS/email notification even though I set it up)

I think most likely it is because me and my wife don't have any joint bank account/credit card. We made a very bad investment in a house right after we got married in 2009. We co-invested that property with a friend of her. But my name was never on the title (only my wife's name). Then things got really bad and her friend decided not to make his share of the payment, which eventually led to the foreclosure. We never had a chance to setup a joint back account since we were advised not to because the expected foreclosure will ruining my credit as well.

Can anyone give me some suggestion in terms of what process we are looking at to resolve this RFE?

what does the first sentence say?

I would say send anything that proves that you live together, that you are together.

For example some things we sent (everything in both our names): health insurance, car insurance, title of car, registration of car, the label of something we got a while back through paypal, season tickets to the amusement park in all our names , bill of vacation together,

do you have the chance to go to the bank so they can write a letter with what you are saying? like maybe that you and your spouse are known there but financially it isnt a good decision to have join bankaccounts or so?

I mean you were advised to do so!

There is a blue page and a two white pages. The blue one contains generic info. The white one basically says more info/evidence is needed. Then it lists three examples of evidences:

1. Birth cert of children

2. Financial Records (bank statements, life/med/renter/homeowner insurance)

3. Residence (utility bills)

For #1, we don't have kids.

For #2, due to the reason stated previously, we don't have joint financial. We have our separate insurance provided by our employers. (We did submitted car insurance.)

For #3, we rent, which has utilities included in the rent.

So I'm gonna ask my real estate agent to write a letter for us, stating he knows us as a couple, as well as our property investment situation. He once suggested us to separate our financial liabilities due to the property. We used to have a joint bank account before buying the house. But we closed it because of his advice.

Also, I'm gonna have my landlord write a letter for us, stating he knows us as tenants for two years and we pay him rent with utility included.

Not sure much else we could provide. We did not travel much. So not a lot of things to provide for that.
