    It's been a while since I've been here. My husband and I have been married for 4.5 years now. We have two sons and we are doing well. What has always helped us is the fact that I lived in Ghana for two years before we were married. It is imperative for each person in the marriage to understand where the other is coming from.

    Can friends and relatives attend oath ceremonies?

    I just attended my husband's oath ceremony. The guests that were present were made up of about 50% children and 50% adults. The children ranged in age from 2 weeks to 7 years. All were very well behaved and the ceremony ran smoothly. The man and woman running the ceremony seemed to welcome the children.

    The reaction to children at the ceremony seems to vary widely from one location to the next.

    The interview was yesterday and he passed and they gave him the oath ceremony in the same day. So he took his oath in the afternoon and now he's a US citizen!! Yay!! So glad to be done with immigration!

    He said the interviewer was really nice, but he was two hours late being interviewed because the man who was supposed to interview him put his file to the side and then left the office to run some errand. So his file was forgotten for a little while. When someone finally noticed it sitting there they gave him his interview and it went smoothly and quickly.

    The oath ceremony had about sixty people taking the oath and the rest of the room was about halfway filled with family of the applicants. The family was about 50/50 with the adults to children ratio. I went with my two year old and my two week old and no one cared at all. Many of the children were ranging from 2 yrs to 7 yrs old. All the kids did really well at staying quiet for the ceremony - even mine.

    I called FBI a few days ago and found out that my 2nd fingerprinting has been rejected again because they cannot read it (quality issue). On my own accord, I walked in to the biometrics center again (for the 3rd time) yesterday to try to see if I can get my fingerprint done. However, I was declined and was asked to wait for instructions from USCIS.

    My interview is scheduled on April 14. I was planning to get a police clearance letter from NYC police headquarters. I also need one from California. However, when I checked out the NY police website, it seems that I would need a letter from USCIS requesting for the clearance letter.

    I also called the USCIS customer service line, as usual, no useful information given.

    Question:

    1. Should I go ahead and get all my police clearance letters, without the USCIS letter? (Would probably cost my a few hundred bucks anyway..)

    2. Have anyone has similar experience or heard of situations like this?

    3. Any advice is appreciated!!

    I think I would continue to call USCIS to see if you can get a more clear answer on what to do.

    I'd start a new topic just to see if anyone else has been through something like this before.

    I would also disagree with the general statement that Marriage is a religious ceremony and that the whole point of marriage is to join together to raise a family, ie children. If that is the case then my husband and I have no right to be married - both of us are beyond child-bearing years - and we weren't married in a religious ceremony - we were married in a civil ceremony. We married because we love each and wanted to spend our lives together, not for religion and not for children.

    My actual statement said, "If it is a religious ceremony" I had kids running around my wedding and I was fine with it. If yours or hers was not, that is different. I am fine with the fact that different people marry for different reasons and everyone has the right to their own decisions. Hence the beauty of America.

    "Catholic theology has always recognized that, according to natural law and the Bible, marriage is not only for the companionship and mutual love of the spouses but also for the procreation of children.

    Thomas Aquinas stated, "It is clear that offspring is the most essential thing in marriage, secondly fidelity, and thirdly [the] sacrament; even as to man it is more essential to be in nature than to be in grace, although it is more excellent to be in grace" (Summa Theologiae IIIb:49:3).

    The Catechism of the Catholic Church says, "By its very nature the institution of marriage and married love is ordered to the procreation and education of the offspring, and it is in them that it finds its crowning glory" (CCC 1652). "Married couples should regard it as their proper mission to transmit human life and to educate their children" (CCC 2367)."

    Well my husband and I would have problems if he expected me to cook Ghanaian food every day for him. I do cook Ghanaian food, but not very often. I admit I used to cook more. We used to both work full time, but right now he is home taking care of our son while I am working so he's got a bit more time at home than I do. When I do cook, I usually cook an American meal because they are faster - much faster. While in Ghana I had someone cooking every meal for me, so my husband was well aware of my cooking laziness. :)

    Marriage is about compromise, so you have to find the middle ground that works for you and your husband, but the attitude he seems to be giving you wouldn't work in my house - whether it be from him or me. I understand wanting food that reminds him of home, but he has two capable hands. Plus, it is completely unfair for a mixed household to solely eat the food from one country. Maybe his complaining about food is just an outlet because he is homesick?

    The recipes start on page 21 or so. You can try the way they suggest first and then modify to taste. It is the cookbook we had while in Ghana so obviously some of the ingredients you won't be able to find here (e.g., dawadawa) but you can cook anything in there without those special items. Also if you have a Ghanaian market nearby, they will usually have premaid kenke so that all you have to cook is the stew, and you could even just get their shitto for that.

    I hope y'all can find a compromise that works for both of you.

    BUT make sure the two of you pick ONE and ONLY reference that one.

    I disagree with this. You need to tell the whole story. If you proposed twice, tell them that you proposed twice and give them the details of both. When you start to selectively tell your story you leave room for inconsistencies.

    My husband proposed more than once - one time over the phone. I wrote about all in the letter I had to write so that they were aware of our whole story. We got the visa without any problem.
