  1. Short answer, yes, file an amended return for each year (form 1040X) up to three years from initial filing (see note below from link). I did not claim Rin's children on our return the first year (2006) we were married, then submitted an amended return 1 1/2 yrs later with them as dependents. I waited until after they had their EAD, got their SSNs, then filed the amended return. No problem, IRS sent me a large check...

Generally, for a credit or refund, you must file Form 1040X within 3 years (including extensions) after the date you filed your original return or within 2 years after the date you paid the tax, whichever is later. If you filed your original return early (for example, March 1 for a calendar year return), your return is considered filed on the due date (generally April 15). However, if you had an extension to file (for example, until October 15) but you filed earlier and we received it July 1, your return is considered filed on July 1. "

I am if this thread in being posted in a wrong forum.I have been here in the USA for 5 yeas married to a USA citizen.I have 2 kids that I came with from my country .Because my kids didnt have social security numbers for the past few years I never claimed them on our tax returns .I had a social security number as soon as I got married but it took us long to AOS thats the kids didnt have SSN .My question is can I claim my kids 3 years backwards someone told me I can but not sure.Need help with someone who has knowledge on this issue thank you .
