Yes, you need to use an SS-5 form when you go to the SS office.

They will only replace your SS card if it has a restriction printed on it. My card is from my K1 days in 2001, so it has "Valid for work only with INS authorization" printed on it, which is why it is being replaced.

If your card does not have any restrictions it should not be replaced, but you still need to submit an SS-5 to update your status.

Yes, that should be possible, of course, you cannot apply until after your taken the Oath, but once you have done that you will be pay through the nose for expediated service

Arvin - I went to the SS office the day after the ceremony. They took all my information and made a copy of my certificate, but they did say they would have to verify my status before they could send a new card.

They said this should take about 4 weeks, but at least I do not have to go back there and the card will come back to me automatically once they have verified everything is in order. I also have an official receipt of the visit with this information on it.

If you still have your naturalization certificate (have not sent it off with a passport application yet) I would recommend going to the SS office ASAP.

Sonia - I agree with what the others have said - if you know you need to be out the country the date your oath is scheduled just explain this to the USCIS and ask them to reschedule you.

As for how much it will delay you, I'm not sure anyone can know that, but as long as you do tell them you can't make that ceremony instead of just not showing up there should be no risk to your application (If you did just not show up they may well consider you application to be abandoned).

I recently naturalized based on 5(+) years as a LPR, even though I have been married to a USC since 2001.

It's definitely a much smoother process to apply this way.

My IO did ask if I had married my fiancee and if were still married (As my Greencard had the IF -Immigrant Fiance - code on it).

Even if the IO asks you the same the questions you can answer "Yes" truthfully.

I too was at the 12:30 ceremony at the LA Convention Center yesterday and I'll second most of what arvinb said.

I came from Orange County though and my tip for anyone going there from OC is to leave extra, extra early!

I set out at 10:30 (a little later than I had planned) and the 5 was backed up all the way past the 710. And them when I got to the Pico Street off-ramp from the 10 it was all backed up and mov-ing extremely slowly. It was like this all the way to the parking structure. Between that and the lines to get in the Convention Center it probably took me an hour to 90 minutes to get from the off-ramp to being checked in and sitting down. Thanks goodness the ceremony did not start right away!

Like arvinb, I am not an emotional person, but I felt a little chocked up when they played the na-tional anthem.

I will also say that it you absolutely do not have to register to vote there. I did not, mainly be-cause I prefer to write on hard, flat surface and there was none there, plus I later noticed that the forms were for the LA County office. I'm not sure what they would do if they receive one from a resident of Orange County.

As for Social Security, they did indeed say to wait 30 days before going there, but I am going to try going today or Monday anyway. The way I see it, your Naturalization Certificate is proof of Citizenship, so they can update your record from that. I guess the people who applied for pass-ports yesterday will have to wait, but I did not, so I still have my certificate.

I'm glad to finally finished this process! Congrats to arvinb and anyone else who naturalized yes-terday and good luck to those still waiting!

Your current SS card. proof of ID, your Certificate of Naturalization and a completed form SS-5.

How old is your card? I received my card in 1981. Should I ask for the new card or current card is enough?

I guess it all depends on if your card has any restrictions printed on it or not. My card is from 2001, from when I came here on a K1 visa, so it has "Valid for work only with INS Authorization" printed on it.

Obviously, I will need a new card. If it did not have this restriction I would not.

Where will it be held? The LACC still has the naturalization ceremony listed in their events on March 22.

I also have an offical letter to appear at an Oath Ceremony on March 22, 12:30pm at the LA Convention Center.

As for my online status, it changed to "Placed in line for scheduling", then 2 or 3 days later it changed to "We have shceduled your Oath and sent a notice" I got the actual letter a day or two after that.

Those who are still waiting, hold tight and you should see some movement soon.

Can an LPR own a gun or firearm? I thought only Citizens can own them.

I think it varies by state, but the 2nd Amendment refers to "the people", not "citizens," so arguably any right to bear arms derived from the 2nd Amendment should apply to all legal residents of the US.

Not that I am a lawyer, or wanting to get into a gun rights argument, but the practice questions for the Civics test includes a question along the lines of "What is one right that applies to all people in the US" and one of the answers is "the right to bear arms."

I was asked at my interview if I owe any taxes (might have been Federal taxes, I'm not sure) - I don't, so I said "No".

In your case (OP), I would say something like "Yes, and I am paying them though a payment arrangement"

If they ask for more information you would need to be honest, but that fact that the taxes were filed and you are paying should not cause any problems.

when did u have ur interview and r u done with ur oath by now?

My interview was on Feb 21 and my Oath will be on March 22.

For those still waiting for interviews I would say just have everything in order, know the answers to the civics questions (they are pretty easy!) and you should be fine.

Hi arvin, my interview was today. it went great and i got my approval letter. I didn't wait too long just 30 min and then got called. It took only 20 min for the interview. It was not hard at all. Six simple questions; one sentence to read and one sentence to write. The officer told me to wait for 90 days maximum for oath letter and he said it's gonna be done before april anyways......so let's see. gud luck to u too. And let me knw abt ur experience too (:

Sounds like you will get March 22 in that case! That's when I have my Oath Ceremenony too (My interview was in Santa Ana last month my experience was very similar to yours, all very simple and over very quickly!)
