  1. Hi folks,

My husband and I married in Nov. of last year in Massachusetts. In our marriage certificate there was a line that said "last name" and then "new name after marriage" (or something like that). Well, I put maiden name for both. I didn't want to change my last name until we had our religious ceremony. But now I'm thinking I could have put my new married name (my husband's last name) anyway and just not have gone down to the SSA office until I chose to do so, right? Well, now my question is can I still go down there (and all the other places RMV, passport, etc) with this certificate and change my name? I figure the important thing is we got married, right? I've seen other posts here where people say that their certificate didn't even ask the name after marriage question. What do you guys think?

  2. Get an infopass appt and ask to speak to an immigration officer. Make sure they know its an innocent mistake

    How do I do that?

Sigh, I was SOO on top of things during the K-1 process, I knew every rule, form, etc like the back of my hand, and I was virtually on this site everyday...correction...I was on this site everyday hehe, but with my babe here and my all consuming job, I am so back tracked it's not even funny. Hmm...so any info on infopass would be greatly appreciated :)

  3. For everyone else..... for the love of Pasta, don't wait until the last day to get married!!!! I mean, really....why? Is three or four days more going to tell you something about your fiancee that you don't already know? Their demonic side won't appear until the 23rd hour of the 89th day? Leave at LEAST a week for a buffer.

I totally agree and I take full responsibility. I tried 2 weeks beforehand but things kept popping up that made it impossible for me to get my license. I couldn't take time off work, and the one time I did, they wouldn't give it to me because they were closing in 20 minutes and they said it takes at least half hour to fill out (when I finally did fill it out last Wed, it literally took 5 minutes). Then they keep it for three days so I didn't get it until Monday. Then the officiant couldn't marry us Monday or Tuesday and we convinced her to marry us this morning before she went to work! (She was sooo great!!). SIGH I guess all the excuses in the world couldn't justify me doing this sooner....but I've definitely learned my lesson.

And one more thing....I'm not letting him leave to go back to his country if I have to handcuff him to my side lol

Thanks everyone for your opinions/advice. I'm definitely breathing a little easier now. And most importantly.....I'm MARRIED!!!!! Wow!

  4. Any corrections/changes would have to be done in the SSA office, since they need to see the document(s). If the name you want is what's on the I-94 I would get it corrected now.

A million thanks mdyoung for your help. I went in there with print outs of the links you posted and fully armed with the information on there...and she quickly made the change, and told us the new SS card will be in the mail shortly. The whole thing took less than 5 minutes. AWESOME!!

  5. When applying for a job, did any of the USC's write a letter to the employer identifying themselves as a reference to the applicant and also stating what the I-94 is and that he is indeed authorized to work? (this is especially for those whose fiance's don't speak English very well and don't have any references).

My fiance is going to a job interview tomorrow and I was just wondering if a letter written on his behalf from me might help any...

    Thanks..

RM 00203.200 Evidence of Identity for an SSN Card

ALIEN: Adult Age 18 and older

    1. Primary Evidence

Request a current U.S. immigration document and an unexpired foreign passport.

-- Form I-551, Permanent Resident Card (includes temporary I-551 stamp/machine readable immigrant visa (MRIV) in combination with an unexpired foreign passport when the I-551 Permanent Resident Card has not yet been issued)

-- Form I-94, Arrival/departure Record in combination with an unexpired foreign passport

-- Form I-766, Employment Authorization card

-- Form I-688B, Employment Authorization card

Government talk confuses me. His passport says both names, his visa says both names, his i-194 says his mother's last name....

  7. Months and monthsa go I posted on the K-1 forum my concern over my fiance's last name. He uses his mother's last name for everything but in his national identity card his name is listed as "father's last name, mother's last name" cuz as we all know most latin american countries if not all use both last names. I was told repeatedly when I posted that when he enters the US and on his application he can continue to just use his mother's last name because in the US we only have one. I thought it was strange that we could just "choose" which one to use. But anyway, I went forth with the K-1 process just using his mother's last name. Now lo and behold when he went to get his Social Security card, they wouldn't accept his mother's last name. They said that only his father's last name will do. Can they do that?? How can they choose which last name is valid and which is not valid?? I couldn't go with him to the SS office so my brother took him so they just accepted it. And I'm too afraid to call thinking they might put the process on hold until it's worked out. They did say to him that he can legally change it afterwards...yeah for around $200. I really don't understand this....

  8. When requesting an SSN card, the documents presented, as evidence must be either originals or copies certified by the issuing agency. SSA will not accept uncertified or notarized photocopies as evidence.

We are using his original birth certificate, which is certified up the whazoo by like 3 Ministerios from his country...and notarized as well by the U.S. Embassy for a touch of good luck...hehe.

Ugh, really hope this will do!!
