My father in law hasn't filed taxes in the last 2 / 3 years and he might even owe the gov't some $ [he thinks]. Does this automatically disqualify him as a joint sponsor? He says he might have copies of his W-2's though.
[i'm from UK, spouse from US, Father in law meets 125% PVL.]
I will steadfastly read your knowledgeable replies...especially.
Thanks.

Guys:
My father in-law is willing to be a joint sponsor. He has a household of 2 (his wife + himself). If he agrees, does this mean we'll be a household of 3 with I as the applicant?
On form I-864P (guidelines), the poverty level for a family of 3 = $23,000. He must cover that amount right? He does not have to cover my US spouse and her kids right.
As always, thank you for your prompt detailed answers!

Important Question: What is the household size of the joint sponsor? This will help people give you some actual figures.
Possibly 2.

Joint sponsor can't combine incomes unless they live in the same household. If they don't, they need to make the full amount to cover themselves + their household as well as the immigrant. They do not need to cover the immigrant's entire household, only the immigrant themselves - immigrant's spouse, etc. are not included in that count.
That is extremely relieving.
Thanks

Any sponsor must meet the 125% poverty level for their household plus the immigrant(s). Their income cannot be combined with your spouse's.
"Their income cannot be combined with your spouse's."
That's the first time i've heard that. How certain are you of it?

No. The joint sponsor doesn't need to make up any shortfall in the primary sponsor's income/assets unless the joint sponsor is a qualifying household member signing an I-864A. In every other case, the joint sponsor only needs to qualify on their own household size and income/assets. It doesn't matter if the primary sponsor has zero income/assets and the joint sponsor barely qualifies on their own - they still qualify.
That's interesting. I assumed the JS had to cover for both their HH and that of the applicants?

the 37K IS the 125% for a family of 6
thanks for that clarity. What about combining the incomes?
-
The HH size of the potential sponsor is 2 [parent and child].
Will the income + assets of both my spouse's and those of the JS be combined then?

Thanks for the replies.
1. 125% of the 37,000 = 46,250. Does this mean the Joint Sponsor [JS] needs to cover their household's Poverty Line [PL] plus ours? [$46,250]?
2. Will the JS's income be added to my spouses or not? Confused there. My understanding was that the USCIS will take into consideration my spouse's income and assets plus those of the JS.
awaiting your good replies...thanks!

State Poverty line = $37,000
Household = 4 kids, my spouse and I (6 total)
Spouses income = $27,000
Equity in home + savings = $21,000
Finding a joint sponsor is challenging. But if we found one, how much must their income be with respect to the information I shared with you?
(We have a car that we hadn't used as asset worth $9,000. Can we use it if we have a 2nd vehicle?)
Currently in US, just finished Masters in May, got married and applied for AOS. From UK, spouse is from US.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I need a joint sponsor [JS].
My father in law [FIL] last year made $24K while his wife made $15K for a total $39K. He is a US citizen claiming 2 kids on his tax returns for 2010 while she is a lawful permanent resident [LPR]. However, the kids don't live with him as at 2011.
Poverty Line required for a HouseHold [HH] of 5 [including myself] = $32,712.
They both filed for a combined tax return last year [2010].
Does this mean that my FIL's wife has to file for I-864A as well?
What if she [MIL] doesn't want to? Game over??
Any knowledgeable answer will be appreciated folks.
PS:
1. Should I just send the docs in and see?
2. i might have sent the same msg's to other's inbox, please help again if you can.
Thanks
